After promising that the House would be in continuous session and meet each Wednesday, Mike Madigan announced yesterday that session would be canceled for the third week in a row.
Mike Madigan is hiding behind the working groups. He is using them as a stall tactic in order to create a crisis so that he can ram through a massive tax hike with no reforms.
Meanwhile, statehouse Republicans and the Governor have two ready-to-go bills that would ensure that schools open on time in the fall, critical government services function and prisons continue to operate.
Madigan and House Democrats might have the luxury of taking a vacation from reality, but parents and public safety officials do not.
The calls will target Reps. Beiser, Bradley, Cloonen, Mussman, Phelps, Skoog, Smiddy and Yingling.
As subscribers know, those “ready-to-go bills” aren’t actually ready because college-town legislators (including Republicans) wanted more higher ed spending.

There’s nothing State Rep Sam Yingling likes more than a little fun in the sun this summer at taxpayer’s expense.
Instead of doing their job, House Speaker Mike Madigan and State Rep Sam Yingling are playing hooky again by cancelling session.
Yingling is too busy worrying about his tan to be concerned with putting public safety, vital services and schools first.
With their shades on and umbrella drink in hand, Madigan and State Rep Yingling continue to hold the budget hostage while trying to force through a massive tax hike with no reforms.

Yingling doesn’t look like he has much of a tan. And I didn’t see any beach pics, either.
And claiming he’s somehow vacationing at taxpayers’ expense? How is that even close to being true?

According to Yingling’s Facebook page he did hit the beach…Round Lake Beach for a new business opening last week. I must have missed the shots of him working on his tan with umbrella drink in hand.

There’s no reason to meet unless there’s a bipartisan, bicameral agreement with structured roll calls.
I believe even Rauner’s inept Press Shop said as much too as their criteria to a deal… but then they wanted everyone in the Chambers while groups did the Governor’s job.
I do feel bad for Yaffe and DeGroot, but… those checks mean more that being the shape goats required to have their names attached to things like this because those that “hired” them won’t put their names to this craziness.
Speaks volumes.

Pretty sure Rauner has said a few times that he doesn’t see a need for sessions because there’s nothing to vote on. Can someone track this down and post?

So why have working groups? Groups that Rauner wanted and was so proud of a few weeks ago? Groups that might actually come up with a plan? There is no point in having a session without something to vote on. Now, if Madigan forbids the groups from meeting on non-session days,and then cancels sessions….that’s different. Quit blaming Madigan and start doing something proactive.

Adding to what OW said, it seems like at the end of this one of the political parties will be hurting as a result of stirring up voter wrath. Hard to say who it will actually be. But the anti Madigan stuff did not generate any actual votes in the Dunking or McCann races; and trump tops the ticket.
So i wonder if the GOP whacking at the hornets nest of voters like this will work, or backfire.

If the answer to solving this crisis is a meeting of the House, why doesn’t the Governor exercise his authority to call a special session?

It seems Speaker Madigan is running time off the clock. The GA may not be getting a tan, but they haven’t been at work either thanks to the schedule.
This is the first time in at least fifteen years the House has fewer than 40 Regular Session days between January 1 - May 31.
Not that anyone needed another hint what the Speaker meant last summer when =Pressed by reporters about why negotiations haven’t been pursued more urgently, Madigan said, “I don’t necessarily presume that there will be some kind of a deal put together between the governor and the legislative leaders.”=
=NO= was the operative phrase all session. When it became clear the working groups were making progress, he suddenly passed a =surprise budget= six days before the end of session and took his ball home. And it’s now obvious he arranged the schedule to slow walk any sausage making this year.

Madigan will not allow Rauner to force him into making the same mistake he made last year. When Rauner would only sign the P-12 education bill.
Once Rauner gets the education bill from the House and the Senate, the ball game is over. Higher Ed and Social Services, State Vendors, Mayors and State Agencies can kiss their funding/reimbursement good-bye.
