Pat Quinn observed the 240th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence by urging the people of Chicago to sign and circulate the Take Charge Chicago petition to term limit the mayor and establish an elected Consumer Advocate for Chicago’s beleaguered taxpayers and consumers.
In signing the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, the Founding Fathers risked everything to establish democracy and throw out monarchy.
The Take Charge Chicago referendums are in keeping with the “Spirit of 1776” where Chicago voters by binding referendum will tell the Mayor what the rules are, not the other way around.
The Take Charge Chicago referendums would be the first binding referendums in memory once 100,000 signatures are collected.
Using an ironing board as a portable petition-signing station at the George Washington statue on the Chicago River, Quinn and Take Charge Chicago unveiled a new campaign video called “Revolution.”
The 60-second animated film features George Washington arguing for term limits as he crosses the Delaware and John Adams being perplexed that Chicago doesn’t have a mayoral term limit.
Produced by a Columbia College videographer, “Revolution” shows that Chicago is the only city among the nation’s ten largest without mayoral term limits and that 20 Illinois communities now have it for their chief executives. To watch the video, click here.
Most of our nation’s Founders were term limits advocates in the American drive to win independence from King George III who reigned on the English throne for 59 years.

I couldn’t even finish watching it due to the fact it was pretty bad. I don’t understand what he is doing. I hope he isn’t trying to run for mayor!

Yeah the Founding Fathers loved term limits so much they didn’t include them in the original Constitution and the Presidential limit wasn’t added until 1951. They were opposed to governmental tyranny in general.
In other words, if you buy former Gov. Quinn’s version of history, you probably also buy that he’s doing this out of the goodness of his heart and not to set up another run for office.

Awful. I cannot imagine anyone seeing it and being persuaded. I would not be averse to term limiting the Mayor, but this ad is just horrid.

From the guy who gave you Squeezey the Python, another brilliant production from a tired, worn-out gadfly who needs to call it a career. Why doesn’t he extend the term limits to aldermen? Is it because Ed Burke’s largesse once saved his skin? Real freedom fighter, this guy.

Can’t even give this one a pass. Many people won’t be able to keep up with the text graphics. Having to read that fast, will cause folks to actually miss the message. Trying to read with that particular musical score is distracting. The moving visual images are just as distracting.
Honestly, I can’t see a single thing that has been done well with this ad. It’s very poor.

Oh, here’s a fun fact: The fifer is from the Manet painting, “The Fifer”, and depicts an anonymous regimental fifer of the SPANISH army in the 1860’s, which at the time was a constitutional monarchy. Oops.

Seems to me the Founding Fathers were against term limits, but also against the idea of career politicians. In other words, the exact opposite of Quinn’s positions on both.

@just me: depends on how the law would be written of course, but according to 22nd US constitutional amendment, a vice president who becomes president can serve up to 10 years if he becomes president two years into his predecessor’s term. So, IF Illinois had that same scenario, then yes, Quinn could run for another term.

Uhmm, Pat Quinn, were you aware that none of the presidents were term limited before the US Constitution was amended while Truman was president? Sort of silly to show all of the presidents who were not subject to term limits.

Quinn won’t say this, but the strongest reason for people to support the Referendum isn’t generic good-government gobbledygook about the Founding Fathers, but rather because it’s a chance to make sure Rahm doesn’t get another term. If this effort were being led by a more outspoken group willing to advertise it as an anti-Rahm measure, I think it would have a much better chance of getting signatures and winning approval

The ad is crud. Crud is sometimes effective. Personally, I would rather see term limits like those for president for all the state executive branch offices. A nice benefit would be that Quinn would have been ineligible to run last time or ever again.

Totally agree. Quinn is aiming for low hanging fruit since Rahm is so widely disliked/reviled/unpopular.
It would be a big mistake for Quinn to imagine that support for such a referendum is synonymous with support for another Quinn revival.

A ridiculous video and dumb proposal from the same guy who brought you the infamous “Cutback Amendment” that eliminated cumulative voting and multi-member State House districts, thus paving the way for today’s hyper-partisanship and gridlock in Springfield. Brilliant! What these two proposals have in common: a populist appeal and offering a simplistic, structural “reform” that effectively absolves citizens of their role in voting for effective officials and against bad ones.

Quinn should be in jail. Between the shoddy fiscal problems with Erwin McEwin, past Director at DCFS, Quinn used $55 million dollars earmarked to reduce Chicago crime, he funneled that money to those who would promote and forward his re-election bid.
Hundreds of people were slaughtered due to his policies, black, white and hispanic.
Quinn simply belongs in jail.

I’m not supportive of establishing another elected office anywhere. Just another office for people like Quinn to run for.
My real question though is who/how is paying for these ads to be produced and run on TV? Is he spending down his own war chest? I can’t imagine there are people still giving him money.
