Mendoza fundraising off Trump visit

Posted in:

* From a Sunsana Mendoza blast e-mail …

Leslie & Donald: Good ole pals?

Friend,

Comptroller Leslie Munger has been silent on Donald Trump’s rise in the Republican party while he calls Mexicans rapists, mocks disabled reporters and disparages women, just to name a few. She is looking like quite the ally to her party’s new leader, even sitting with him at a City Club event.

But I’m not staying quiet… or having lunch with Donald Trump.

This morning, I stood in front of Trump Tower in Chicago to say enough is enough.

We need to build a symbolic wall between Trump and the White House.

It’s time to unite and tell our opponent Leslie Munger and her pal Donald Trump that his hateful rhetoric, and her silence in the face of it, are destructive to the well being of our state and country.

If you’re ready to send a clear message to Leslie and her friends, chip in $10 today and say ‘enough is enough.’

Together, we can make sure Donald Trump’s hateful and divisive rhetoric stays far away from Springfield.

* And you may remember this tweet during Trump’s City Club speech…

Mendoza, who is running for Illinois comptroller, said she came to denounce Trump’s “message of hate.”

“Our job is to stand up against that, to espouse about love. Talking about our differences is what makes us great and to actually get through our differences through talking as professionals, adults, rationally, instead of as, like, bullies on the playground,” Mendoza said.

The incumbent comptroller, Leslie Munger, last month said she wouldn’t attend the Republican National Convention in Cleveland, but wouldn’t comment on whether she supports Trump.

Mendoza on Tuesday called on Munger to publicly denounce Trump.

“It takes about a half a nanosecond to know where you should stand when it comes to Donald Trump,” Mendoza said. “She should be denouncing him, just like pretty much anybody who has half a brain is doing these days.”

  1. Social Media has yet to help more than hurt…

    To the Post,

This is the Mendoza “Sweet Spot”…

    Trump/Rauner/”Wingmam”/RTW…

Anything that can solidify Democrats and their distain for Trump and/or Rauner… that’s the Mendoza ballgame.

If Labor and Democrats “decide” to make Munger the statewide example, then Mendoza has a chance…

Munger? It’s Madigan, it’s wedding dances, and ruining Mendoza with ads that will be so scathing… it will get so ugly.

So… yeah, this is the Mendoza Play.

Can she and her less than stellar group make these happenings translate to voted pluses… Hmm.

Might as well make cash to help you with that plan, and Trump and Munger… “yeah, ok”.

  2. I don’t see Mr. Trump in the photo. The handsome man she is sitting next to is her husband. Oh, can you send Susan $10? Really!

  3. Two takeaways!

    1) Never ignore a creative opportunity to raise campaign cash.

    2) Sometimes it’s not a good idea to hobnob with a celebrity who is an egomaniac.

  4. Not real smart; but hey: It Is IL.

  6. Mendoza’s been everywhere lately, and seems to be picking up steam.

Will be a tough one to win.

  7. She should have run from the D months ago! Sheesh what is the holdup? Rauner looked like a pro by comparison by not stepping in it today when pressed on Trump.

  8. Thou dost protest too much.

Comment by Jackie Tuesday, Jul 12, 16 @ 3:57 pm

  9. Right.

She’s fundraising off of Madigan, the unions & the trial lawyers, and that’s it.

Comment by Roger Dorn Tuesday, Jul 12, 16 @ 3:59 pm

  10. As long as Munger is Rauner’s parrot, she’s vulnerable.

Comment by The Fool On The Hill Tuesday, Jul 12, 16 @ 3:59 pm

  11. I’m with OW, this is going to be a great race to watch — more of a true Rauner v. Madigan proxy than the Dunkin and McCann primaries.

Madigan muscled Biss out of Mendoza’s way because he was convinced the GOP would have a Latino candidate on the presidential ticket. Now that it’s pretty clear that isn’t happening, I wonder if he’d rather have Biss taking on Munger?

    Comment by T/ Tuesday, Jul 12, 16 @ 4:11 pm

  12. Dopey.

    Comment by A guy Tuesday, Jul 12, 16 @ 4:19 pm

  13. At one time I might have agreed Biss was the stronger candidate, but since he’s started publishing his looooonnngg form manifestos, not so much. Perfect examples of asking the time and receiving instructions on how to build a clock.

Comment by Arthur Andersen Tuesday, Jul 12, 16 @ 4:22 pm

  14. Munger’s been running to every downstate media market soaking up free media on the backs of those poor state legislators who are whining about not getting paid. She’s used the office with creativity.

Comment by Downstate Dem Tuesday, Jul 12, 16 @ 4:26 pm

  15. ===Perfect examples of asking the time and receiving instructions on how to build a clock.===

    Well said.

Mendoza is a Latina that has won city-wide office in Chicago. Biss was too big of a climb against Munger, “Wingman” and Right to Work notwithstanding.

Biss’ day in the sun will be in short order… just stop with the yearbook answers no one asked the questions to yet.

Comment by Oswego Willy Tuesday, Jul 12, 16 @ 4:27 pm

  16. Mendoza is the Energizer Bunny. She’s a really hard working candidate but it will be a tough race.

Comment by Because I said so.... Tuesday, Jul 12, 16 @ 4:28 pm

  17. Good move. Most of the Republicans are trying their best to distance themselves from Trump. It’s smart for the Democrats to tie opposing candidates to him every chance they get.

Comment by Wensicia Tuesday, Jul 12, 16 @ 4:28 pm

  18. Yup, sure looks Leslie Munger is sitting next to her husband, John Munger, in that photo. Horrors! A husband sitting with his wife! In Chicago! How atrocious!

Reminds me of those famous lyrics sung by the Chairman of The Board many moons ago . . . “I saw a man, he danced with his wife. In Chicago, Chicago my home town.”

I know this is Illinois Politics 101, where grown ups are not allowed to speak, and where poor Judy Topinka once danced with George Ryan to her political doom, but . . .

  19. ===Leslie Munger is sitting next to her husband, John Munger, in that photo===

Nobody says John is the Donald. They did, however, sit at Trump’s table.

    So take a breath already.

Comment by Rich Miller Tuesday, Jul 12, 16 @ 4:41 pm

  20. Oh - Louis G Atsaves -,

It was “tweeted” Munger was at Trump’s table. Not from Mendoza but from a reporter.

Are you tempting the “kampaign karma” that no one got a picture?

    Um, ok…

Comment by Oswego Willy Tuesday, Jul 12, 16 @ 4:44 pm

  21. identity politics is Mendoza’s path to victory here. she is counting on a massive latino push, which Trump will undoubtedly spark. if munger were a man, Mendoza would play the woman card too. What are the policy differences that matter in this race!? Being comptroller is about being a competent administrator who can read a balance which I doubt Mendoza, or any elected in chicago can do. I don’t see why you would put presiding officer of the chicago city council now in charge of writing the state checks, but unfortunately I expect the voters to do it.

  27. You know, Trump never said that “Mexicans are rapists”. When will the media note that fact?

  28. === You know, Trump never said that “Mexicans are rapists”. When will the media note that fact? ===

Yes he did. In the context of Mexicans crossing the border.

Comment by Norseman Tuesday, Jul 12, 16 @ 6:35 pm

  29. On the transcript of Trump’s June 16th speech he said, “The Mexican Government is forcing their most unwanted people into the United States. They are, in many cases, criminals, drug dealers, rapists, etc.”

Comment by Jocko Tuesday, Jul 12, 16 @ 8:12 pm

  30. If Trumps numbers improve, I guarantee she will be touting that she sat at his table. It happened.
