Former state GOP chairman: Trump can’t win, Hillary better alternative

Posted in:

* Illinois Review

Former Illinois Republican Party Chairman Pat Brady, told Bill Cameron on “Connected to Chicago” that Donald Trump “cannot win the election.” Brady, who is a Kasich delegate to the Republican National Convention, said there’s still an outside chance that Trump will not receive the nomination. Brady told Cameron that Trump’s solutions are not Republican solutions and that Trump’s lack of organization ensures he will lose.

Brady said neither Abe Lincoln or Ronald Reagan would attend this year’s convention because of Trump, and that he’s not surprised that many members of the Illinois GOP Congressional Delegation aren’t attending - although they usually don’t. However, Brady believes this absence of delegates may be a way to open the convention and nominate someone other than Trump.

Regarding the presumptive Democrat Party nominee, Brady told Cameron that FBI Director James Comey is “one of the most highly respected law enforcement people in the country” and that he had “no quarrel with his decision not to bring forward” an indictment of Clinton.

Brady admitted that no matter what happens, he’s “certainly not voting for Donald Trump” in November; and thinks that four years of Hillary Clinton might be good in that it will allow the Republicans to get the Senate back in 2018, which he presumes the Republicans will lose this year. Brady said he “cannot stomach the idea of Donald Trump being in the White House for a minute,” and that Hillary Clinton is a better alternative.

Discuss.

ICYMI: GOP Convention Providing Around the Clock Satellite Interview Opportunities for Regional Television Affiliates

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The 2016 Republican National Convention will provide regional television affiliates with around-the-clock access to satellite interviews with delegates, elected officials, and Convention surrogates live or live-to-tape during the week of the Convention (July 18-21, 2016).

GOP-TV is a television production run jointly by the Republican National Convention and the Republican National Committee to provide surrogate interviews to local TV affiliates, live or live-to-tape, via satellite. It will be provided free-of-charge to television stations. We will have a large Regional Press operation with specific staffers working with your television station to book interviews.

There will be multiple locations around the Convention complex to maximize local affiliates’ access to interviews. The studios will be available Monday, July 18th through Thursday, July 21st, from 6 am – 12 am each day for live or live-to-tape interviews.

In addition to facilitating remote interviews via satellite, the GOP-TV studios and satellite feed will regularly provide behind-the-scenes original raw content for television stations’ to utilize.

I’m not a convention type person and have only been to one national convention (when it was in Chicago), but from that experience I’m figuring that 11:59 pm interviews with delegates could be, um, interesting.

  1. Well, what does the self-proclaimed head of the Illinois GOP think?

Oh yeah. He doesn’t think anything. He smiles and laughs and pretends that the question asked wasn’t asked.

    That’s fun.

I guess explaining how a former chairman of the state party is wrong not for not backing a race baiting misogynist is too tough for the Illinois Review, or…

  9. He’s right about Trump not being a true Republican. Just consider his positions on a handful of core issues that have defined Republican ideology in the post war era:

    1) He opposes free trade, the hallmark Adam Smith-inspired Republican economics.

    2) He’s against Reagan-Bush style foreign interventionism.

    3) He opposes “small government” entitlement reform, like Paul Ryan’s Social Security and Medicare proposals.

    4) And does anyone really think he is genuinely pro-life on abortion? Anyone?

Call him a nationalist or a nativist, a populist or demagogue. But viewed from a Political Science 101 perspective, he is not a Republican.

Knowing you support Donald Trump I guess you think the Illinois Review is right?

Comment by Oswego Willy Wednesday, Jul 13, 16 @ 4:13 pm

  13. D Saint, there are plenty of folks who aren’t thrilled with where this wound up. Something to consider is that there were 17 candidates vying for this spot, in and of itself that was going to create a need to unify. There are a number of those candidates that might have been “divisive” in the party for being “Too (pick an adjective)”
Trump was the most unusual of the crop, just as Bernie was on the other side. People aren’t screaming their support. Most GOP folks I come into contact with have a greater disdain for Hillary than love for Trump.

He won. By every measure, he won. Changing the rules to suit the game, during or after the game is something that’s bad policy no matter who does it, no matter when.

Pat Brady is a little bit like Pat Quinn. He just doesn’t know when to leave. He’s pandering now and in a national setting, he’ll be pummeled. Illinois tolerates people (on both sides of the aisle) that no other state would. In Cleveland, he’ll be “Pat who?” and quickly be told to get his shine box.

Brady’s wrong on a critical point: Trump can win, and that’s the grave danger.

Grave Danger? I’ve been hearing that since the 60s. Nixon, Humphrey, McGovern, Reagan, Obama, for heaven’s sake. All (and more) “grave danger.”

Fortunately the framers spent some time working out a Separation of Powers. It mostly works. With Trump, it would definitely work given the feelings on both sides.

  24. Brady has always been a disgrace to the GOP. He fought the rank and file for years, and was completely against letting the membership select leaders, keeping it in the hands of a corrupt few.

ANYONE supporting that Clinton corruption mess has no place being taken seriously in the GOP.

Who’s Our Nominee? That’s a funny name — for what office?

Guy, when you’re walking all those thousands of precincts “working your hump off” for Trump, do you also do your “frantic fundraising” for Catholic Charities?

    How does that work?

You give them the Trump pitch on Mexicans and Muslims….

…. and then you turn around and ask for money to support Catholic Charities immigration and naturalization and refugee resettlement programs that were cut by Rauner?

I guess that would make you Cognitive Dissonance.

Don’t worry, your base will turn out. They can’t decide whether they despise minorities, gays, women, or immigrants more.

It knda begs the question, why are you lamenting the possible lack of voter participation among xenophobic, homophobic, mysoginists as a “moderate Republican”?

Wouldn’t our country be better off if these folks had nobody to vote for, and what’s it say about your party that you are worried you can’t win without them?

  27. Trump is a dangerous demagogue and a buffoon. This may be the first time I’ve agreed with Brady.

Comment by Ron Wednesday, Jul 13, 16 @ 5:29 pm

  28. Trump is a faker (h/t Ginsburg), but he has started some great conversations.

If there was a Brexit style vote stateside, where we the people were choosing to stay in global trade agreements like TPP or NAFTA, there is a strong chance that there would be a US Exit.

Trump has tapped into this and voiced it. Hillary, among her many wildly modulating character traits and positions is too much of a globalist. Globalism helps multi-national corps to clean up with both the producing country and the consuming countries. Globalism is a utopia of low wages, and a low regulation environment bringing products to over-consuming, highly manipulated consumer markets.

Trump gets this. Hopefully Hillary gets it soon. Trump is going to gain a lot of points on this issue alone. He is bad news on many issues but not this one.

Not sure how I am going to vote. Waiting for the head to head to get going.

  29. I saw a national poll with interesting numbers, which doesn’t mean much considering different results in battleground states…still:

The poll showed 38% supporting Clinton, 17% supporting Trump and another 38% either supporting another candidate or refusing to vote for anyone. Brady is not a traitor and he echoes what many other Republicans feel.

  30. == he “cannot stomach the idea of Donald Trump being in the White House for a minute,” and that Hillary Clinton is a better alternative. ==

Can not argue with Brady’s statement or position. Truthful & realistic.

The Wash Post has this quote: “Jeb Bush: I can’t vote for Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton, ‘and it breaks my heart’”

Bush’s position is anti-Democracy and anti American. No 3rd party candidate has a chance. So, he a says: ‘Don’t bother voting; stay home.’ !

The choice is ‘pick the least worst’, if that’s how you see it, but do your duty & vote. THAT is YOUR voice.

Anything less denegrates the base of America.

I think that Trump would make MUCH better SCOTUS recommendations, be far better in trade negotiations, come up with better economic and foreign policy based upon the advisors he’s brought on the team.
