Today’s quotable

Posted in:

* CBS 2

Levine asked Kirk about a series of controversial statements he has made in recent memory. That includes a reference last year to Chicago’s South Side, when he referred to an unmarried colleague as a “bro with no ho.”

“When you’re in a race like I’m in, everything is taken the wrong way,” Kirk says.

But then he almost immediately let fly another headscratcher about the therapeutic benefits of pinot grigio. He says the wine has helped him talk more clearly.

“Suddenly, as the pinot grigio hit the brain stem, my speech abilities came back. And I said to my girlfriend, ‘OK, it’s going to be only pignot grigio.’”

I’m not sure how that could be taken the “wrong” way, unless it was the wine talking. /snark

Right from the start with all of my heart
White white wine you really know how fi love
Your kind of loving like a blessing from above
White white wine you give me whole heap of zing
Whole heap of zing make me do me own thing
White white wine in a 80’s style

  2. I’ve heard speculation that some of Kirk’s odd comments may be the result of the stroke he suffered. If that’s indeed the case I do feel badly for him.

  3. kirks seemed on target during that interview. i think people underestimating him are making poor decisions.

  4. That was low of jay levine. Come on. Politics aside ,
The man rehabbed back from a serious stroke. Terrible commentary

Kirk’s long history of reckless talk predates his stroke.

  6. Confused on how what he said was questionable? disrespectful

Comment by Sharon Friday, Jul 22, 16 @ 12:37 pm

  7. jeez no one has a sense of humor these days. this was obviously kirk trying to make light of some of the hardest days post stroke.

Jay needs a glass of wine

  8. Kirk has been out and about lately. heard him on the radio last week. sounded good to me.

Comment by Randolph Friday, Jul 22, 16 @ 12:41 pm

  9. People are far too sensitive. None of Kirk’s “odd” comments are odd at all. He is just trying to add some color/humor to what are normally very dull and predictable interviews.

Comment by Anonymous Friday, Jul 22, 16 @ 12:43 pm

  10. Ugh.

    Next time, say Cannoli helps.

Seriously, it’s just as insane without the stigma.

    Artl,

    It’s Friday. I’ll get a late Tee Time…

  11. ===Seriously, it’s just as insane without the stigma.===

He probably wasn’t the only U.S. Senate candidate drinking heavily last night.

  12. How’s that old adage go?

Wine before eight(am), speech is great?

Comment by How Ironic Friday, Jul 22, 16 @ 12:55 pm

  13. Say what you will about Kirk’s “odd comments”. I think they’re funny.

From making fun of John Kerry by quoting movie lines, to bro with no ho, Kirk is a funny dude.

  14. I don’t mind a Senator who enjoys a glass of Pinot Grigio from time to time. Who doesn’t?

It appears the wine is for medicinal purposes, and stated as such, comedically, that’s not the best way to go about this, for Kirk

Comment by Oswego Willy Friday, Jul 22, 16 @ 12:58 pm

  16. Son, don’t trust a man who doesn’t drink. He’s probably the self-righteous sort who thinks he knows better than everyone.

Comment by triggered corn Friday, Jul 22, 16 @ 1:00 pm

  17. I think people forget Senators are humans too. Humans make funny comments and we love our alcohol. Yes Senator Kirk may be held to a higher standard but don’t forget he’s a representative of THE PEOPLE. He’s one of us.

Comment by green bean Friday, Jul 22, 16 @ 1:05 pm

  18. Senator Kirk was making a light-hearted comment-nothing wrong with a little vino every now and then! A little comedic relief during a hotly-contested election isn’t a bad thing.

===“Suddenly, as the pinot grigio hit the brain stem, my speech abilities came back. And I said to my girlfriend, ‘OK, it’s going to be only pignot grigio.’”===

Kirk is saying “wine helps” medicinally…

    Odd joke to make…

  20. ===Kirk is saying “wine helps” medicinally===

Hey, my doctor recommends it. Of course, he also owns a wine shop.

Comment by Rich Miller Friday, Jul 22, 16 @ 1:18 pm

  21. ===Hey, my doctor recommends it. Of course, he also owns a wine shop.===

Now that makes sense. That I can rationalize perfectly.

I need to find a doctor who has a strong connection to an Italian bakery of some sort, then…

Comment by Oswego Willy Friday, Jul 22, 16 @ 1:21 pm

  22. If he’s struggling to speak, the wine may relax him enough to help. I can absolutely see that.

Oh, my. A little googling reveals that Dr. Johnson did the same. “Soon after I perceived that I had suffered a paralytic stroke, and that my speech was taken from me. . . In order to rouse the vocal organs I took two drams of wine.”

Comment by JoanP Friday, Jul 22, 16 @ 1:25 pm

  23. Given Trump’s seeming success being crass and vulgar, Kirk may have stumbled on to a new strategy.

  24. How soon until the Duckworth tweet criticizing him for discriminating against “wines of color?”

  28. ===Kirk does not and has never had a girlfriend===

Um, yes he does. I spent quite a bit of time with her during the Goldberg wedding. Very committed woman.

Comment by Rich Miller Friday, Jul 22, 16 @ 1:47 pm

  29. Not to mention he was married.

  30. I love my wine as much as ( maybe more ) than the next person. And I have been known, at times, to do some things that could be considered uncharacteristic of my norm. Like calling old girl-friends or deciding to talk politics to my brother who thinks that Rush Limbaugh is quoting from the Bible for 3 hours a day.

Yet, and remember this Rich, red wine is good for your heart health.

Comment by illini Friday, Jul 22, 16 @ 1:50 pm

  31. Not quite the headscratcher it’s made out to be.

    -in vino veritas-

Comment by Wensicia Friday, Jul 22, 16 @ 1:53 pm

  32. I find I am quite liking Kirk these days: whatever the motivation, he seems to be speaking from the unfiltered heart. Can’t be easy to be him, defending his seat, in this climate, these days. I’ll toast him tonight!

    Comment by 5th Generation Chicagoan Friday, Jul 22, 16 @ 1:57 pm

  33. The idea that Mark Kirk is some kind of open-book truthteller is ridiculous on its face. But it is a nifty trick for him to fashion this portrayal.

Comment by Albany Park Patriot Friday, Jul 22, 16 @ 2:05 pm

  34. Who is the new girlfriend? Has Michael Sneed fallen asleep and missed the news item?

Comment by Anonymous Friday, Jul 22, 16 @ 2:18 pm

  35. The only alarming alcohol related news in this election cycle is that Trump can manage to be so discolored and off-colored without the performance enhancing effects of Nancy Whiskey.

I think Kirk is a typical weasel, but who cares if he drinks and who cares if he cracks a little joke about it?

Comment by AlfondoGonz Friday, Jul 22, 16 @ 2:33 pm

  36. It was a weird segue-way more than anything else. It’s not a belly laugher, but it’s kinda funny.

And do we really still need to be gay baiting they guy? If anything, he seems to be a bit of player. Good for him.

Comment by ArchPundit Friday, Jul 22, 16 @ 2:44 pm

  37. ===If anything, he seems to be a bit of player.===

He seems to have slowed down on that. That woman is just dedicated to him. Lucky guy.

Awesome. And that wasn’t meant as a deep criticism…just a rather amusing contrast to the rest
