A weird dude, that one

The Chicago White Sox suspended Chris Sale five days, then got a rare win in a game their ace was supposed to start.

Adam Eaton drove in Avisail Garcia with a game-ending single in the ninth inning to lift the White Sox to a 4-3 victory on Sunday in a game that was suspended the previous night because of rain.

The big news Sunday was Sale getting suspended and fined one day after he was scratched from his scheduled start and sent home. The punishment was handed down after he destroyed collared throwback uniforms the team was scheduled to wear in this game. He is eligible to return Thursday against the crosstown Cubs at Wrigley Field, though Hahn would not say if the left-hander would start that game

With Sale out, the White Sox were forced to go with their bullpen. The game was interrupted three times by thunderstorms on Saturday before play was stopped after eight innings tied at 3.

The game resumed Sunday and the White Sox quickly ended it.

Consider this a Major League Baseball open thread.

  1. I hope the Chapman-to-Cubs deal falls through.

  2. Sox should not tolerate this. They should trade him to the Cardinals, pronto.

  3. Sox players should not have had to tolerate wearing those 1976 disco jerseys

In 1976 the Sox even wore shorts with those jerseys. I didn’t hear if they were going to wear shorts on Saturday.

  4. Bringing in Chapman given his recent domestic history would pose a quandary for some Cubs fans. Does winning trump the issues raised by having a guy like that on the team?

  5. Whoa , No Match for ” The Bird ” , ” Spaceman”, countless others , or my all time favorite the guy who ” Ran The Bases Backward ” ( who , of course , became part of the SouthSide’s most unique broadcast team ever )

  6. Cubs need a closer and this guy is lights out. What he will cost in prospects is made up for the lack of drama in his saves.

  7. $9.15 million this year, and he throws a hissy fit over a throwback uniform? Develop some humility, you special snowflake.

  9. Putting Saturday’s issues to the side, I say trade him. The Sox have been mired in less than mediocrity ever since 2008. They have tried the same formula of signing washed up veteran free agents with no success. At the pace the Sox are going, Sale will be long gone before they are ever competitive again. Why not jump start the rebuild and gut it out in 4th-5th place for the next two to three years?

  10. My MLB open thread suggestion is that if the cubs make the world series that Bartman throws the first pitch and he walks to the mount with a goat in tow.

  11. Here’s a link to the jersey in question. Not sure I’d want to pitch a whole game with that weird collar flapping around either but there was probably a better way to fix the issue. Hope he stays, he’s the kind of guy you build a team around.

  14. Cardinals don’t have enough prospects (because they’re playing, and performing, at the major league - they’ll restock but not there yet). Astros and Rangers are better bets. Actually a trade with Cubs (Schwarber and Baez) makes sense for both teams - Cubs starting pitching is showing its age.

  15. I hope the Cubs don’t give up much to rent Chapman for the rest of the season. Given his off-the-field issues, I really hope they don’t consider giving him a long-term deal.

Accused of choking his girlfriend and firing eight shots from a gun during the incident. First player ever punished under MLB’s domestic violence policy, a 30-day suspension.

On the other hand, he’s a lefty who can throw a baseball 106 mph and locate the strike zone more often than not.

We might be about to learn how badly Theo wants to win this year.

  16. (I love Sale and will take the passion + craziness almost any day, but they’re not close to being a contender ==> wasting great years.)

  17. Is there a trade in the offing for Chris Sale?

Weird stuff. Reminds of Carlos Zambrano.

For old-timers, there was the time when Ferguson Jenkins had a meltdown and began throwing bats from the dugout on to the field. He was traded after the season finished to Texas.

  19. Those uniforms are awesome. The Sox wore those when I was a kid and they were one of a kind. The Sox need to make them the weekly throwback uniform next year to celebrate the South Side Hitmen.

  22. The uniforms were an abomination the ball players hated them. We should never trade Chris Sale,to any National league team.

The uniforms were Mary Frances Veeck’s idea.

  25. For $9.15 million, I would wear any uniform they wanted. I noticed the throwback shirt available online has Sale’s name on it. Maybe he saw that and then wanted to be paid extra and was told no.

Comment by DuPage Monday, Jul 25, 16 @ 11:55 am

  26. Not mentioned yet — I read it on the internet so it must be true — the starter is supposed to be able to give thumbs up/down on the uniform options. Sox wanted to sell throwback jerseys instead of stick with the team rule. Considering he’s responsible for a third of their wins and in the running for a Cy Young, that was a stupid decision by management.

Plus his way of showing his disdain was creative and pretty funny.

  27. Started to listen to ball games and sports talk shows on the radio after getting fed up with NPR. Nice change of pace. Don’t have a particularly favorite team, just listen to what ever I can get on am radio.

  28. This episode is a wee bit too disturbing. Emotion on the spot is one thing. Shredding unis? Too weird.

Might be time to liquidate for the highest possible value. The only thing that covers up this kind of weirdness is “winning a lot”.

I’d hate to see him go, but I’d hate it even more if we didn’t get value first. A team with very, very tenured veterans that wins a lot is his best destination. Sadly, that just isn’t us right now. This is a step beyond even Zambrano antics.

  30. I really like Chris Sale, but I want to call him a baby on this. But, that would be dissing babies. I think he should talk to a member of the Bears on their comfort levels when they go to work and then compare. Scratchy/tight clothes vs. playing with fractured bones.

  31. I think the mans’ lucky he didn’t leave the stadium in handcuffs for destruction of property and vandalism. I bet those uniform jerseys weren’t cheap, besides the loss on revenue since replica jerseys lost value. A fine isn’t good enough, restitution should be required. Look, players, grow up, you are paid millions of dollars- wear whatever management tell you to. The rest of us have to.

  33. Sale’s actions,in my opinion, seem to be those of someone who wants to be traded. However I wouldn’t be too quick to trade him. Seems to me that teams who trade players of the talent level of Sale hardly ever receive enough in return

I would be very surprised if the Cubs haven’t already agreed in principle to a long-term deal with Chapman before pulling the lever on the trade considering what they gave up. I don’t think Theo/Jed would give away the players they did for a half-season rental.
