Even as party leaders warned delegates not to lose sight of the November election, their fight with Rauner at the statehouse was front-and-center. That was a function of both the political nature of the gathering, and the topic of the day: Organized labor. Rauner has spent the past year-and-a-half trying to chip away at the influence of Illinois labor unions, with Democrats resisting in support of their union allies.
Delegates heard from labor leaders, who preached party unity ahead of the official nomination of Clinton this week, but also bashed Rauner for his anti-union efforts. As the breakfast meeting concluded, delegates were shown a promotional video featuring a number of labor leaders linking Rauner and Trump and declaring that there is “no difference between” the two Republican businessmen-turned-politicians.
The video was produced by the Chicago Federation of Labor.

I guess this video is fine for the convention attendees… but as a public video? Meh.
Overall its a good ad, but can we please get unions to understand that their messengers can and should be rank and file members, and not union bosses?

For Democrats, Trump is the gift that keeps on giving. If he drives up Democratic turnout more than Republican turnout, it will destroy Kirk and hurt state level Republicans.

People like OW, Madigan and Cullerton say you should pay far above market rates through prevailing wage in construction and maintenance instead of spending the money to keep your children more safe.

they think its just fine to keep your children hostage by striking for more money even when the schools are broke and it will hurt the children.

The GA has passed such labor biased legislation that the pensions for the unions and politicians have far outstripped the states ability to pay from salary increases above increases in revenues and things like “spiking” and other methods to bloat pensions like from Frank Mautino.

Surprise surprise, no matter how batty the candidate, Republican voters fall in line. Like 2010, Democrats lose when some of us fail to vote or pretend we have real choices in general elections. Choices are for primaries.

Trump and Rauner are near polar opposites regarding labor unions. Rauner blasted them during his campaign and ran unions out of his operations as a “business man”. Trump has done the opposite.
OJ Clinton on the other hand has destroyed unions with trade deals, and sat on the board of Walmart without saying one peep in support of bringing them into the world’s largest retailer. Just the opposite.
Sorry CFL, I’m not buying your BS at all on this issue. Mrs. Clinton is an insider who has been making life hell for unions over the past 30 years in Arkansas and across the US.
She is anyone’s friend when she wants something from you.
I’m sticking with accomplishmens and results, not blind loyalty.
Trump is no Rauner. Dislike them both, but I’m not stupid either.

I do this for two reasons; to annoy some really annoying posters and to get the other side of the argument out there so that this place doesn’t just stay a Dem, union and government worker love fest.

What has Trump ever said about unions? He’s nothing like Rauner. Rauner came into office with a very real, very serious plan. Trump ran as a publicity stunt and has never had a plan of any kind.

There’s too much rhetoric and ignorance on the issue of prevailing wages. To Bob, if a wage is “prevailing,” it is by definition the market rate. To the unions (and Rich Miller), what was lost about the Governor’s AV of the union backed prevailing wage bill last week was that the AV actually protected the Prevailing Wage Act. This is a major concession by the Administration, yet labor is attempting to spin it as an assault on prevailing wages. The private trades are falling like lemmings behind the public sector unions. It doesn’t make much sense at this point.

You and I may agree on many domestic issues. Tier 1 pensions were unsustainable. Tier 2 appear to be sustainable. Prevailing wage is not a hot button for me. I am not a supporter of it but would not spend a lot of political capital on it.
Trump scares me on the international issues. When he says defending NATO allies is optional, he invites a Russian attack as in the Ukraine. A trade war with China gives the Chinese warhawks an advantage. It also gives them an excuse for economic failure. Their economy is showing the effects of crony capitalism, graft, and shoddy construction.
Trump will pick more useless fights and say more damaging things. And he will hurt the Republican candidates when he does.
I think Rauner is much more disciplined than Trump.

Sorry Rich. I misremembered, as they say. So many headlines picked up on the union claim that the vetoes themselves were anti-union. Your headline last week merely stated that the Governor vetoed union-backed bill. Will try to be more careful next time. I truly appreciate your blog and value my subscription.

Why does the CFL feel a need to buck up support for a Democratic presidential candidate, or tear down a GOP one?
It’s because Trump is finding success with traditional Democratic middle class voters across the Midwest?
Tell Clinton to help them forget how she ignored unions since until she needed them.
Comparing Trump to Rauner makes about as much sense as comparing Obama to Blagojevich. Rauner and Blagojevich are magnificent mutant gubernatorial mistakes. Tagging their party’s presidential candidates to either of them is a laugh.

Rauner’s not a washed-up reality TV star trying to get a bunch of free publicity. What’s going on with the AFSCME contract has been his plan since before the election. Trump probably can’t even name the three branches of the Federal government.

Not by the legal definition in Illinois, phocion. “Prevailing Wage” fro region is established by the Federal government, (BLS IIRC) and is NOT based on market labor rates, it’s based on union labor rates. Don’t trust me, look it up. BLS provides market rate data for each construction discipline based upon surveys, but prevailing wage does not.
Not meant to be a flame, but it’s important that you know the difference if you’re going to post on the subject.

It seems to be meant for a union audience and the choice of which union leaders to feature seems be based partly on how much they would be recognized by members outside of their own union.
Most interesting is that they did not mention Clinton’s name at all.
