Today’s number: 32 percent

* From a Kankakee Daily Journal editorial

Women continue to be underrepresented in elected offices across the U.S., but the situation in Illinois is among the bright spots, and area voters have helped shine the light.

The state ranks sixth in the country for the percentage of female lawmakers serving in the state Legislature. Women make up about 32 percent of the Illinois General Assembly, holding 57 of the 177 seats.

There’s obviously still a long way to go, but as the editorial goes on to note, Kankakee has a female state Representative (Kate Cloonen), a female mayor (Nina Epstein) and a female US Rep. (Robin Kelly). Sen. Toi Hutchinson also represents the city. Rep. Cloonen’s Republican opponent is a female, so the GA’s gender balance won’t change if the incumbent loses.

  1. I foresee a time when women will outnumber men in politics.

  2. HB, they already do. When they are elected in greater numbers it will be easier to see. We share that hope.

  3. I don’t care about the gender of our leaders, just what they can accomplish for us.

Hillary would be a disastrous POTUS regardless of her gender…

  4. Tired of this male - female controversy.

I remember when Thatcher became PM of Britain- a real first. A lot of the women groups in this nation ignored this milestone entirely because she was not a liberal.

I honestly could care less about the sex of my elected representatives- I just want someone to vote like I would vote.

  9. Rich -

The gains for women in state government have not been equal.

Since 1998, the number and percentage of Democratic women in state office has climbed steadily.

At the same time, the number and percentage of Republican women has dropped precipitously.

  10. @Federalist,

No, I just thought he was funny, he is some kind of a comedian. I could (not) care less, we all know what the phrase means when used in America.

  11. From my experience, female politicians typically seem to be more thoughtful, more nuanced, and have a deeper understanding of the complexities of issues. All I know is that if this state would have elected Dawn Clark Netsch as governor, we probably wouldn’t be facing the issues we do now.

  12. tired of this male -female controversy? yeah, me too. tired of waiting 50 years after all men got the right to vote in this country for women to get the right to vote. tired of waiting more than that time for women to be elected to city council and the county board in Chicago. tired of waiting for equal pay for equal work. and tired of fighting for reproductive freedom. so tired of this male-female controversy because some men want to control women.

Or Judy … and the fact I don’t have to type the rest of her name speaks volumes to her competence and record.

  14. If I was a women I would not brag about the Illinois State Legislature, given their dismal performance in the past decade or so.
