More on Madigan, Rauner and Trump

Posted in:

* More on Speaker Madigan’s interview with Public Radio. This time, on Gov. Rauner and Donald Trump

“If you study the statements and the actions of both men, you’ll see a great similarity in their methods and how they castigate people and how they’re always criticizing people without ever talking about their own programs,” Madigan said. “And so I think I’m fully justified in linking Trump and Rauner together in extremism” […]

“Trump has his methods, he has his ways of doing things and I think at the end of the day, the majority of Americans are going to say, ‘that really doesn’t have a place in America,’” Madigan said. “America is a country that recognizes decency and tolerance and respect for others.”

Discuss.

  1. Trump and Rauner have both shown a distaste (at the least) for policy details.

  2. Rauner is much more disciplined, however, when it comes to staying on message.

Comment by chi Wednesday, Aug 3, 16 @ 2:44 pm

  3. The majority of Americans would have a much easier time saying “that doesn’t have a place in America” if Trump’s opponent didn’t have so many different but equally noticeable flaws.

  4. “If you study the statements and the actions of both men, you’ll see a great similarity in their methods and how they lurk behind curtains and how they’re always manipulating people without ever taking a break for decades,” Sillies said. “And so I think I’m fully justified in linking Madigan and the Wizard of Oz together in puppetry”

  5. Rauner was embraced by the ILGOP, while the GOP is now seriously rethinking their candidate.

Maybe Rauner will be PRESCIENT in sticking to his “I will support the GOP candidate” mantra?

  6. Madrigal for Governor!

  7. ===always criticizing people without ever talking about their own programs===

Isn’t this the pot calling the kettle black. Other than raising taxes and giving bigger pensions to government workers what are the Madigan programs?

  8. Madigan said. “America is a country that recognizes decency and tolerance and respect for others.”

    Words to live by.

Comment by Rufus Wednesday, Aug 3, 16 @ 2:54 pm

  9. Decency and tolerance of course, but first comes power and keeping it for 3 decades - that is the Madigan method !

Comment by Anonymous Wednesday, Aug 3, 16 @ 2:56 pm

  10. Madigan hits the nail on the head and therein lies the dilemma for someone like me who’s not a straight party person. I cannot in good conscience vote for HC but I also have serious concerns/reservations about Trump. To say I’m ‘gun shy’ about voting for Trump after having witnessed what Rauner has done to IL is an understatement.

  11. ==giving bigger pensions to government workers==

I really wish people would do a bit of research before saying such things.

    But, I digress . . .

    To the post -

I can understand the feeling that there are similarities between Trump and Rauner. Both seem to have a really hard time accepting things when they don’t get their way and they double down and triple down on their arguments as opposed to moving on to something else.

  12. Trump can keep an ending “g” better. Winning!

Comment by Dome Gnome Wednesday, Aug 3, 16 @ 3:05 pm

  13. but can Rauner do things “bigly” like Trump?

Comment by Amalia Wednesday, Aug 3, 16 @ 3:08 pm

  14. Actually the “bigger pensions” are a function of collective bargainin’ which is a function of — ta da– executive branch. 3% COLA Thompson, early retirement George.
Madigan has been around nursing home reforms, the 9000 school reforms, IL Power Agency and the $1 billion refund, marriage equality, etc. to name a few items. Aby other questions.

Comment by Annonin' Wednesday, Aug 3, 16 @ 3:20 pm

  15. Trump and Rauner have both shown that they hate unions. Plus they both have issues with the courts/judges. They both hate laws that don’t benefit the 1%. They don’t like rules and regulations that protects clean air, water and soil. They believe everyone should take care of themselves. They don’t believe the poor should have babies. The list goes on…

Comment by Mama Wednesday, Aug 3, 16 @ 3:31 pm

  16. Does Madigan slap his knee and roll on the floor lauging in private and say to his buddies “I just compared Rauner and Trump.”

    Funny stuff.

Comment by Rhino Slider Wednesday, Aug 3, 16 @ 3:40 pm

  17. I am in no way a fan of Rauner but I think the comparison to Trump is of base. Whew, that was tough to type!

Every candidate has some similarity somewhere that can be drawn. I think elitism and dishonesty are fair comparisons between Trump and Rauner, but to be fair, you can throw HRC in that mix too.

Unlike the two boys, Clinton was not a child of privilege.

I hate to say this but I think Rauner is much tougher than Trump. Trump is a child in a mans body (except for the child sized hands).

Comment by JS Mill Wednesday, Aug 3, 16 @ 4:01 pm

  18. Public radio does itself no favors with interviews of this kind. If you want to ask this kind of question (certainly their right to do), is this really the guy to ask? Strains some credibility to say the least.

    Comment by A guy Wednesday, Aug 3, 16 @ 4:30 pm

  19. The only similarity is that Rauner won largely because he was not Pat Quinn. If Trump wins it will be largely because he’s not Hillary Clinton.

Comment by CrazyHorse Wednesday, Aug 3, 16 @ 4:32 pm

  20. Both Rauner and Trump have hijacked the GOP (in IL and National, respectively) and GOP leaders find themselves hung out to dry while both men have “their” ways that lead people to see irrational thoughts to governing.

Rauner is more than willing to fund Democrats, now with a failed PAC to get Raunerite wants.

Both men brag endlessly on the “million and millions” they either donate or spend to get themselves elected.

They both feel their money allows them to just all-out mock the voters. Rauner wears costumes, like “dress up” with a pristine work and a leather vest worn with a button down dress shirt.

Trunp? He’s “simpler”. The “Make America Great Again” hat… or not. Suit, tie… That’s the costume, the caricature Trump has of politicians, while Rauner goes out of his way to mock voters… unless it’s the people he respects. Then they’re tie-worthy.

They pretend to be… what they think voters think they should be…

They both “have an excuse for everything”

    Vietnam draft? - Payton Prep

Friends with Vlintons? - Friends with Rahm

    Donate millions? - “I donate millions… ”

Only the best work for the Trump Organizatin? - “Superstars”

I know better, I’m the savior? - “I’m gonna drive ‘em nuts”

    Lots of “the same”

    Lots

Comment by Oswego Willy Wednesday, Aug 3, 16 @ 4:48 pm

  21. I guess I forgot.

Bruce Rauner still supports Donald Trump for President.

Has Rauner denounced going after the Gold Star parents, for example?

    I haven’t heard it.

Comment by Oswego Willy Wednesday, Aug 3, 16 @ 4:55 pm

  22. Willy - you never forget, and I have not heard it yet either!!!!

Comment by illini Wednesday, Aug 3, 16 @ 5:03 pm

  23. Hey Annonin, you left out “predatory lending” on the list.

I never knew that the executive branch can change pension laws without that pesky legislature. Wonder how Mr. Speaker voted on “3% COLA,” ERIs, formula changes, etc. especially the ones that goosed his own pension.

Comment by Arthur Andersen Wednesday, Aug 3, 16 @ 5:17 pm

  24. == I cannot in good conscience vote for HC but I also have serious concerns/reservations about Trump. ==

    - Cubs in ‘16 - succinctly sums up a lot of people’s view of the national race.

Comment by RNUG Wednesday, Aug 3, 16 @ 5:19 pm

  25. Rauner had no plan. He said “Trust me”.
Trump has no plan. He says “Trust me.”
This is the formula for a PT Barnum election experience.

Comment by Winnin' Wednesday, Aug 3, 16 @ 5:54 pm

  26. ===Cubs in ‘16 - succinctly sums up a lot of people’s view of the national race.===

Agree. With all the intelligent people to choose from in IL and nationally, I’m always amazed that we can’t get better candidates to choose from.

Comment by justacitizen Wednesday, Aug 3, 16 @ 9:48 pm

  27. I listened to the entire interview. Neither Amanda or Craig challenged the Speaker on his efforts to be moderate and meet in the middle. Moderate by definition would be moving toward the middle interms of the metrics of Illinois.

Trying to move our unemployment rate, workers comp rate, economic growth rates, income and property tax rates to the middle are all worthy goals. Speaker Madigan is advocating non of those positions

Comment by Lucky Pierre Wednesday, Aug 3, 16 @ 11:14 pm

  28. The only extremism going on in Illinois is that Democrats think that things can remain the same as they have been for the past 30 years.

Comment by Morgan County Thursday, Aug 4, 16 @ 12:01 am

  29. Eh, it’s just Madigan name calling Rauner and trying to use Trump to his advantage for the election just like Rauner is using Madigan for the November election.

The funny thing is Trump might actually have a higher approval rating than Madigan.
