* People on the South and West sides often fear going to public parks because of all the shootings. In the Gold Coast, they hate their gelato. I am not making this up…
Gelato-gate is heating up.
Gold Coast residents who frequent Mariano Park, a picturesque little plaza at State and Rush streets, clamored for weeks for new park tenant Bow Truss Coffee to bring in the gelato that was promised them.
In mid-July, they got their wish with the addition of Black Dog Gelato, known for its unusual flavors and supplier to some of the city’s best restaurants.
But, these residents now say, it isn’t good enough for their tony neighborhood.
The complaints, voiced via e-mail to DNAinfo last week, cite everything from the texture of the gelato, to Bow Truss owner Phil Tadros’ inaction, to the appearance of the Black Dog stand, essentially a freezer case stationed under an awning next to the Bow Truss kiosk.
Brian Dryer, a Gold Coast resident for nearly 20 years, called the pink stand an “IKEA shack” with inadequate signage and “no smiles at counter it’s terrible.” […]
The park “needs to be updated end of story. We don’t deserve what is being offered right now as dessert,” said Judi Steinreich, who appears to be one of those leading the charge leveled at Bow Truss owner Phil Tadros.

This is what happens when you live in a bubble and there is not real work to occupy your time. If 1/3 of the energy expended towards the gelato “problem” was directed at something productive, maybe real issues could be solved.

Yes indeed! While tens of thousands of IL families will struggle today to scrape up enough food to fill their stomachs, Thurston and Lovie Howell bemoan the consistency of their gelato. That’s some perspective for ya.

Ah the problems of the upper crust. Maybe they should hold a fundraiser for Rauner and Rahm then they’ll get a State grant for studying the best type of gelato that will fit in the neighborhood and then create a TIF district for where the gelato machine resides.

Rich People Problems
Such is the reality of life. Might tsk-tsk this, but it is what it is. As seen from the advisory on a millionaire tax that was disregarded, thank you (to keep programs in place, for one, that feed empty stomachs of the poor), the problem of gelato
will continue to be the worst of the dilemmas of the wealthy. And what will be done about that?

have you never visited the north side of Chicago? it’s filled with stuff like this “controversy.” three people know someone in the media and suddenly something that most everyone else is ignoring becomes a story. then because the media gets invested in the narrative they keep covering it, often in the absence of statistics, actual facts. any one story can be compelling. the whole is usually not one story. welcome to life of people with too much happy time on their hands.

We need to make sure that we keep taxes low on these Gold Coast folks because they are job creators. Many middle class workers are being paid too much though. Let’s just pass prevailing wage and get those wages down and this state will prosper. /s

Did she even think before she spoke or is she just that out of touch to think that this is some big crisis? Someone ought to tell her that we’ve got plenty of real problems to think about and her gelato “crisis” isn’t one of them.

I’ve got a better idea. Give them their precious gelato and we’ll tax it at $500 bucks a pop. Want your gelato? Fine. But you’re going to pay for it if for no other reason than you deserve to pay for it.

DNAInfo writers really didn’t appreciate this article getting criticized.
Their defense was the article illustrates the “unchecked privilege” of rich, white Gold Coasters compared to the life-or-death problems of those in other neighborhoods. But I don’t see that sort of angle in this story.

I get why the covered it, first it would appear that enough people are talking about it (since there was a meeting about the ‘problem’) and hyperlocal news is kind of what the web can do well when it comes to local news.

Anyone who lived in the area for the past couple years knew there was a pretty tough fight going on between longtime, long loved, Whispers Cafe and the new proposed tenant. My gut, when I saw the headline at least, was that the article was supposed to be about that neighborhood political battle over the cafe space — not gelato brands.
The article and the quotes are just… weird.

People who live downtown are the absolute worst. They think of the downtown as their personal property that allows tourists and visitors to come in. Their attitude transcends into thinking they deserve the best streets, the best sidewalks, the best parks, the best of everything because “this is downtown.” If this dessert stand wasn’t in a public space they wouldn’t say anything, but because it is in a park they think they react in this disgusting manner.

Why is the park being used for private profit in the first place? No need to plop a gelato/coffee stand on public property when there are plenty of places nearby.

Ghost and Huh?
Gelato is not sherbet. It is Italy’s version of ice cream - the differences include lower butterfat content, higher density, and it is served slightly warmer. It is also delicious. Ghost you should try it next time you are at HyVee!

The other gelato shop owner is quoted as saying, “You’re dealing with the highest echelon of people who live in Chicago.”
They sure don’t act like it.
“Amorino’s gelato is imported from Europe and is layered, flower-like, into cones. Fans say it’s the most authentic gelato this side of the Atlantic.”
Y’know, I’ve had gelato in many, many places in Italy, and NONE of them “layered it, flower-like” into cones.

I live near the store in Wicker Park/East Village.
It’s very good gelato, the flavors are not the run-of-the-mill like vanilla, raspberry, tiramisu etc. Some of them are pretty crazy combos.
It’s an overall favorite wit the 20-something crowd. Maybe too trendy for the Nordstroms-crowd? But, the people who shop at Barney’s would love it.
I agree with JoanP on the layering of gelato–never seen it prepared so exotic. It’s traditionally served as a scoop.

I used to live in the area, many years ago. Rented a small condo.
Whispers, the former tenant, was terrible. Their coffee was awful. The gelato was just regular gelato that you can get in many places on the north side. And it was all pricier than most nearby coffee shops. It was like paying intelligensia prices for folgers crystals.
I don’t even live in Illinois anymore, so I can’t say I’ve tried the new place, but it can’t be any worse than the old place.
BTW Gelato is like ice cream, except it’s made with milk instead of cream. So it’s got a different flavor and texture. Less rich, but the flavors stand out more. Oddly, it also tastes creamier, because its softer.

yearning for the good old days. the first gelato around Chicago came to Elmwood Park. You’d drive out to get the lemon ice at Johnny’s and head to the tiny new shop with the gelato. ah, the 80s.
