  1. Those pants are pulled up pretty high so if the slogan fits … wear it.

Comment by Deft Wing Thursday, Aug 18, 16 @ 9:17 am

  2. “Ha! Madigan wears his pants really high…that’s hilarious. Quick put that online.”

“What time is that budget meeting next week, again? What do you mean they cancelled it? Oh well. Let’s do more google image searches.”

Comment by Curious Thursday, Aug 18, 16 @ 9:19 am

  3. Nice pleats Mr. Speaker.

Comment by Honeybear Thursday, Aug 18, 16 @ 9:20 am

  4. I want all of these buttons.

Comment by Dee Lay Thursday, Aug 18, 16 @ 9:21 am

  5. Pants are clearly hiked up to wade through all the manure being thrown his way.

Comment by Ron Burgundy Thursday, Aug 18, 16 @ 9:25 am

  6. Yikes.

Gotta hand it to the Rauner Crew here… This is really, really good if they can build on it.

The picture? Couldn’t photoshop a picture better for this, at the Fair.

Comment by Oswego Willy Thursday, Aug 18, 16 @ 9:25 am

  7. Oh geesh, he even has his slacks hiked up to his ribcage.

    Comment by Cubs in '16 Thursday, Aug 18, 16 @ 9:26 am

  8. Doing the same thing over and over, and then wondering why there is no progress.

How many years have they been doing this? What has it gotten them? Democratic super-majorities.

The Speaker should pay for those ads.

Comment by Gooner Thursday, Aug 18, 16 @ 9:26 am

  9. #PantsHikeMike

Comment by MissingG Thursday, Aug 18, 16 @ 9:28 am

  10. IL GOP may get a few laughs from this quasi-clever rebranding, but are they also laughing at the 30 years of futility and incompetence when it comes to challenging the Speaker’s power?

Comment by Dr. Reston Thursday, Aug 18, 16 @ 9:28 am

  11. Looks like those buttons yesterday got a rise out of Mr. Speaker.

Comment by Arthur Andersen Thursday, Aug 18, 16 @ 9:28 am

  12. I oppose term limits because I think they create a system that relies too heavily on staff expertise (as if we don’t do that already)and direction to shape agendas, and reduce the opportunity for elected officials to become champions and get into understanding the nuance of the issues they work on.

    So that’s the policy-based argument.

As for how effective this photo is, I under what the GOP would start looking like if they suddenly found old, rich white guys unfit for public office.

Comment by Who Else Thursday, Aug 18, 16 @ 9:33 am

  13. As a major distributor of “Fire Madigan” paraphernalia, this is good for my business.

The twist of “Career Politician Day”, as a stand-alone retort here… IS good.

It’s good for the Day. If they can build on it… for the day… it’s good.

Tomorrow? Not so much. Today, it’s really good.

Comment by Oswego Willy Thursday, Aug 18, 16 @ 9:40 am

  14. “Hike your pants up!”

Reminds me of the comedy sketch on MST3K.

Comment by Anonymous Thursday, Aug 18, 16 @ 9:41 am

  15. Look! He used to be young! And now he is old! And e has had a job in the meantime! Can you believe it???

Comment by AlfondoGonz Thursday, Aug 18, 16 @ 9:47 am

  16. As someone not particularly thrilled with Madigan or DPI in general, this photo does not make me dislike him and mostly comes across as making fun of a dude for being old.

Comment by Will Caskey Thursday, Aug 18, 16 @ 9:47 am

  17. The irony here is that the Dem’s could use the same messages and put the faces of many “career” republicans on a poster too. I can’t believe how many people seem to forget the 26 year run of republican domination prior to the last 15 years. The republican party apparatus is by far most at fault for their failures from enabling bad, corrupted, or uninteresting candidates - throw in really lame campaigns and viola’ - Democratic domination.

Comment by Captain Illini Thursday, Aug 18, 16 @ 9:53 am

  18. The pants go 2 inches higher for every decade in office.

Comment by Streator Curmudgeon Thursday, Aug 18, 16 @ 9:55 am

  19. Term limits polls great (tho dubious policy).

Mike madigan has big negatives .

So obviously, combine the two, and wrap them around your dem opponents. Brilliant. Except madigan keeps getting his members elected. Better the republicans recruit solid candidates to run against the sue scherers of the world. I just got a mailing from sue, still talking about “going through the budget line by line.” In the current situation, thats rich.

Comment by Langhorne Thursday, Aug 18, 16 @ 10:00 am

  20. ===#PantsHikeMike===

    Excellent! LOL

    Comment by Cubs in '16 Thursday, Aug 18, 16 @ 10:04 am

  21. Add Ageism to the Rauner playbook

Comment by Groundhog Day Thursday, Aug 18, 16 @ 10:17 am

  22. No kidding, my initial thought was why President Bush (41) was positioned next to a Mike Madigan button.
Not a flattering photo of our Speaker. But he is coated in political Teflon so no worries…

Comment by Jake From Elwood Thursday, Aug 18, 16 @ 10:25 am

  23. This from a party that reveres Ronald Reagan. Yikes.

Comment by Precinct Captain Thursday, Aug 18, 16 @ 10:28 am

  24. After Governor Von Carhartt, (the 6th most unpopular governor in the U.S., Madigan starts looking pretty good.

Comment by BlueGuyGroup Thursday, Aug 18, 16 @ 10:45 am

  25. It actually makes Madigan look somewhat sympathetic.

Comment by ArchPundit Thursday, Aug 18, 16 @ 10:45 am

  26. Holy Cow….Mike could almost use his belt as suspenders

Comment by Anonymous Thursday, Aug 18, 16 @ 10:46 am

  27. I’ll take Madigan over Governor Von Carhartt any day.

Comment by betcha Thursday, Aug 18, 16 @ 10:47 am

Comment by Anon Thursday, Aug 18, 16 @ 11:16 am

What’s wrong with having experience in the state capitol?

Why are long careers only unpopular in politics?

Comment by Mama Thursday, Aug 18, 16 @ 11:17 am

  31. The Republicans spotted the fabled Leprechaun. Still can’t catch him.

Word is they will outsource job to Wile E. Coyote.

  43. Think he does it for the slimming effect.

Comment by Bogey Golfer Thursday, Aug 18, 16 @ 4:00 pm

  44. By the time Rauner’s term limits bill affects him, Madigan will need to open his fly to blow his nose.

After that, he’ll be wearing those pants in the Senate.

    Comment by 47th Ward Thursday, Aug 18, 16 @ 7:26 pm

  45. “Get off my Lawn ! “

Comment by NorthsideNoMore Thursday, Aug 18, 16 @ 9:09 pm

  46. They can’t use that image widely, I think it could be seen as an attack on Madigan’s age - just the images alone feel that way. But they aren’t - this is just a social media thing for their base.

They are smart, this is a very good professional crew and they know that they need to help motivate turnout for the fall. That’s the only battle they are fighting now - try to get GOP voters to the polls because Trump is likelt to severly depress turnout among moderate Republicans.

Humor based social media playing to your base. Good stuff - but not going to persuade any leaner voters that’s for sure.

  47. I can’t stand Madigan or his party, but it isn’t smart to use this photo. He just looks like a sad old man. Making fun of that seems mean. Find one where he doesn’t look so decrepit if you’re going to use this tactic. Better yet, show some class and just don’t.
