Mendoza lashes out at Munger, Rauner

Posted in:

* This morning…

Meanwhile, Chicago City Clerk Susana Mendoza went after GOP Comptroller Leslie Munger, said it's sexist to suggest her career due to Maigan.

— Monique Garcia (@moniquegarcia) August 18, 2016

Mendoza said Munger's remarks on Tuesday about her being part of the "machine" is a "sexist notion," and that she worked for her own success

— Tina Sfondeles (@TinaSfon) August 18, 2016

Mendoza said Comtroller Munger might as well be Comptroller Rauner. Said Rauner to blame for Chicago's violence for cutting services.

— Monique Garcia (@moniquegarcia) August 18, 2016

* Background from yesterday

“They can’t get a budget passed,” Munger said of Democrats, “but somehow they found time to get [a special election for comptroller] passed. And they did it because they think a Republican cannot win in Illinois during a presidential year. Well, they have a surprise coming. Because even though I’m the incumbent in this race, I’m the newcomer to state government. My opponent spent her entire adult life on the city of Chicago and state of Illinois payrolls. … She’s used the Chicago machine to jump from office to office, and now she wants to use them again, because she cannot run on her record.”

Mendoza worked for the city of Chicago’s planning department and was a state representative for 10 years before being elected Chicago’s city clerk in 2011. And while House Speaker MICHAEL MADIGAN, D-Chicago, has had that post for all but two years since 1983, Munger, in her speech, seemed to stretch to tie Mendoza to the long tenure of the speaker, who also chairs the Democratic Party of Illinois.

“She has voted for every one of Speaker Madigan’s unbalanced budgets,” Munger said. “She’s voted for every tax increase, every pension holiday and all of the borrowing that (has) created the mess that we are in today. She calls Speaker Madigan her mentor. …”

“So today, let’s say ‘Enough!’” Munger said, trying to get the fairgrounds crowd going.

“We’ve had enough of the Chicago way and enough of the politics,” Munger said. “Let’s give Susana Mendoza and her supporters a wake-up call. No more deals. No more politicians who put themselves first.”

  1. Surprised she didn’t go with racist too.

  2. From that first paragraph, so Munger thinks she should have gotten the gig for four years without ever having been elected?

Also, there was a budget when that bill passed. It needed fixing, but nothing compared to the two budgets that we’ve “had” so far under this Governor.

  3. Wow… I actually think it’s sexist for Mendoza to even make it about gender.

Comment by Clark Thursday, Aug 18, 16 @ 10:02 am

  4. I didn’t know it was possible for Mendoza to release a statement without talking about her amazing biography (that Madigan molded).

  5. - “They can’t get a budget passed”

The constitution requires the governor prepare and submit a balanced budget for the general assembly to approve.

Rauner has never submitted a balanced budget to the general assembly for approval.

Munger is blaming the Democrats for Rauner’s refusal to perform the job he paid over $28 million to get.

When they say Fix Illinois are they talking about neutering?

    Comment by Chicago 20 Thursday, Aug 18, 16 @ 10:13 am

  6. Somebody should give the Madigan news to whomever is in charge of Mendoza’s website.

Also, why engage on the topic at all? Mendoza is a Democrat running in a year that should go extremely well for Democrats.

Stay low and out of the spotlight. Instead, she wants to turn it into a battle and the only impact will be to get Munger some coverage.

So far, it is a terrible play be Mendoza.

Comment by Gooner Thursday, Aug 18, 16 @ 10:13 am

  7. This is a bit of a reach on Mendoza’s part. She can’t point to Mike Madigan as he political mentor and then claim that it’s sexist when her appointment uses her own words against her.

Comment by pundent Thursday, Aug 18, 16 @ 10:14 am

  8. Vote against Munger answers to Rauner.
Vote against Kirk because he’s tied to Trump or W as their breakfast brochure shows.
Vote against Trump because he’s extreme…

Maybe the Dems could work on telling us why we should vote FOR their candidate.

    Comment by m Thursday, Aug 18, 16 @ 10:22 am

  9. Claim that Mendoza only got where she is today because of Madigan and machine politics = sexist.

Claim that Munger is Comptroller Rauner (aka doesn’t make decisions for herself) = totally legit.

Got it. I like Mendoza but she needed to take the high road here.

Comment by Curious Thursday, Aug 18, 16 @ 10:23 am

  10. I don’t get Mendoza’s campaign at all. It seems to be one non-sequitur after another and lacks any real theme.

    Munger needs a history lesson.

1- Her Governor cannot get a budget passed. The Democrats passed one. It was a turd, but they did pass one.

Munger is in no way shape or form a political new comer. Just a pure canard.

She is the typical insider who is now out front, just like the governor, and finds out it isn’t so easy to have your name on it. You cannot just wave a magic wand and have your bidding done.

    Nah.

You just laid out “Vote Accirdingly” and it worked swimmingly for McCann and it defeated Dunkin.

    “Simple”

    Munger Crew,

Find some daylight. It’s yours to lose.

Comment by Oswego Willy Thursday, Aug 18, 16 @ 10:24 am

  12. It’s quite hypocritical for Loser Leslie–who voters rejected for a state representative seat–to whine about insider and machine politics when they are the only reason she is comptroller.

Comment by Precinct Captain Thursday, Aug 18, 16 @ 10:25 am

  13. Who runs Chicago? How long has the violence impacted Chicago? How long has her party run Chicago?

If Mendoza answers these questions truthfully, she has her answer who is responsible for the violence.

Comment by Piece of Work Thursday, Aug 18, 16 @ 10:25 am

  14. Munger says Dems can’t get a budget passed. Let’s be clear on this: the reason they “can’t get a budget passed” is because Rauner is insisting on quasi-budget related items (his Turn Around Agenda) as prerequisites for his approval. Some aspects of the TA violate core principles of the Democratic platform.

He would have much more success with his agenda (much of which Illinois voters support) if he practiced more politics and less crash and burn.

Comment by Buster crab Thursday, Aug 18, 16 @ 10:37 am

  15. Munger is starting to sound really whiny.

    Comment by A Jack Thursday, Aug 18, 16 @ 11:03 am

  16. Last night at the KISS concert, Jim Langfelder and Munger came on stage. Jim gave a key to Paul Stanley and then Munger read a Rauner decree about how today was KISS day.

Felt sorry for Jim because when they were both introduced at the same time, the boos rained down. The boos at Rauner’s name were worse.

    Comment by Dr X Thursday, Aug 18, 16 @ 11:17 am

  17. It’s a poor play by Mendoza, and it is likely to cost her more than anything she might gain. Mendoza throwing “sexist” at another female with strong male support only trivializes the word and makes her look weak.

With the current state of the state and the crazy election season, this is Mendoza’s fight to lose. She needs to stay on track with real arguments and quit the sideline circus activity.

  18. Sorry - didn’t see it had already been posted.

“He would have much more success with his agenda (much of which Illinois voters support)”

Rauner’s 35% approval rating says otherwise.

  20. ===I didn’t know it was possible for Mendoza to release a statement without talking about her amazing biography (that Madigan molded).

Ah, layering sexist comments on top of sexist comments. Mendoza does have an amazing biography. Don’t be jealous! And good for her for calling out Munger’s comments (who ironically was appointed by a man after losing her own run for the house). Women are always shamed for calling out such comments for what they are. Politics is a contact sport, but insinuating that her entire career boils down to two men who collectively had little to do with her political success is bs.

Comment by shytown Thursday, Aug 18, 16 @ 11:37 am

  21. Because Madigan’s approval is 13 percent Rauner is winning by a mile

Comment by Lucky Pierre Thursday, Aug 18, 16 @ 12:28 pm

  22. I’ve been saying this for a while now, but Mendoza’s campaign needs a red bull or something.
This campaign should be a cakewalk (not counting Rauner’s money).

Comment by Bleh Thursday, Aug 18, 16 @ 12:30 pm

  23. Just getting so tired of the stupid, intelligence-insulting “guilt by association” campaigns. Candidates on both sides of the aisle (but in this cycle, especially Dems) for all offices, please tell us why we should vote for YOU and what you, personally, can and will be able to do for us if you are elected.

Comment by Responsa Thursday, Aug 18, 16 @ 12:32 pm

  24. Lucky Pierre,

Mike Madigan does not hold a state wide office. Rauner does. Rauner’s approval rating among his consitutency is low.

A valid comparison would be Mike Madigan’s approval rating by his constituency (district). I did a quick google and could not find one.

Comment by Steve Polite Thursday, Aug 18, 16 @ 12:48 pm

  25. For those wondering what the Dems will offer if they take the Gov’s office - they won’t kick poor people and the orgs that support them in the gut in order to push their own political agenda. That’s enough for me.

Comment by Shytown Thursday, Aug 18, 16 @ 1:37 pm

  26. ==Because Madigan’s approval is 13 percent Rauner is winning by a mile==

You keep telling yourself it matters.

    You crack me up sometimes.

Comment by Demoralized Thursday, Aug 18, 16 @ 2:16 pm

  27. Munger’s statement is not sexist, but it is inaccurate.

Susana does not owe her career to Michael Madigan.

She owes it to Ed Burke.
