Question of the Day

Posted in:

Yesterday everyone weighed in on their favorite to win the likely royal rumble between the big three. I’m curious, when will the battle finally end?

What are your predictions on the specific date for this year’s session to close?

My lease is up on August 15th , and I like to see things to the end. What are my chances?

BONUS: If JBT were in office would your answer change?

  3. AM or PM?

  4. I’ll take Monday, July 16th. If JBT was Governor, the session would still go 2-3 weeks into June.

  5. Let’s see, wasn’t it July 27th in the first term when the Governor last tried to show up the speaker during session? Given this early and more obvious assault, I’m thinking August, and the Governor again will call Special Sessions every day and Madigan will adjourn them every day… If JBT had won, I think we’d be looking at early to mid June. Really, I’m kind of looking for a rebellion from the rank and file, but which way that cuts, I’m not sure yet.

  6. If she were governor, they would be done on time. I predict a mid June adjournment. If there is going to be a tax increase, it gets harder to do the longer it drags on.

  7. Labor Day - and I’m being serious.

How can the General Assembly get anything done when they neither meet regularly and only three people in this state have any real power? Let’s face it: Donne Trotter and Gary Hannig are pawns of Emil and MJM, respectively. Tom Cross and Frank Watson have no say, and the newly minted three tops seem to agree on little, if anything.

JBT would make it worse. At least Blago can break and bend with the wind, and if MJM threatens any Blago-backed legislation, we will see concessions. With JBT at the helm, what incentive would she have had to grant Madigan’s wishes?

  8. August 19th to avert transit cuts the next day.

  9. The 12th of Never.

Once it gets to July 1, am I not correct that Cross’s House Republicans get to play (bills require a super-majority)? In the Senate, poor Frank Watson may never get to play, since Presidnet Jones already has a super majority. But then, when Gov and MJM start the battle royale, Emil’s got a few members who may just wander off the Jones reservation. Of course Cross in some respects gets along better with His Hairness than the other 3 tops (they used to be roomies, didn’t they?, so Rod may find it useful to have Cross in the game. . .looks like it could be a “who’s on first” scenario, with the sides shifting frequently. It’s conceivable (tho probably not likely) that rank-and-file legislators could even get to play if Rod and the 4 tops go into all-out war. What FUN this will be!

If Judy were Gov? It would be quicker–probably by July 1. Judy knows how to play nice, and knows how to negotiate.

Of course it’s always possible that Rod and the Tops could grow up and learn to play nice with each other. . .. . NO NEVER MIND! That will not happen!

  10. I say August 30th, late afternoon, just in time for Labor Day weekend.

  11. I am not going to predict an adjournment date… ok, just to go along with the program I’ll say Aug. 1. My REAL question (as a new state employee!) is… what are the chances of budget bickering leading to one or more payless paydays in July?

  12. It will end only after Blago stops his attempts to remove former Madigan employees from their top jobs in his administration. The Blagettes should know better than retaliate in that fashion with all the scrutiny from the feds.
