Rauner schooled on school funding

Posted in:

* Gov. Rauner visited this place last week

Rebound is an alternative education program under the umbrella of Carbondale Community High School and open to any student throughout the region. Rebound serves about 225 students annually who have dropped out of traditional high schools for a variety of reasons, and about 85 at-risk students who are provided additional supportive services.

* And then this happened

“It’s very inspirational to be here and see this,” Rauner said following his tour on Friday morning. The governor said he would be talking with his staff about ways the state can provide more support to alternative high school programs.

Rauner noted that K-12 schools were the only state-funded service to receive a full budget this year, and that lawmakers approved and he signed a deal to increase the amount of money going to schools.

But Rebound and other schools like it were not included in that deal.

“I did not know — this is something I learned today — that this particular segment of our education system did not get a full year (funding) in the stopgap because I wanted to make sure all of K-12 got a full year.”

  1. Yikes. Who’s the SuperStar staffer that let him walk into that?

  2. Things really seem to be coming together nicely for the Rauner Administration. /s

  3. Bruce,

Glad you made sure that full year funding was available for non-violent offenders in our prison system!

    Love,
    Doug

  5. “I did not know — this is something I learned today”

Maybe you should read a newspaper. Or actually read the bills you sign. Maybe a staff member could brief you on what is actually inside the bills your signature goes on. Perhaps a light synopsis is in order? But I guess that would go against the entire republican credo, “We have never been more content to look this foolish.”

  6. Huge Staff and Crew fail.

Seriously, you don’t check on the school and it’s positives and negatives and where it stands in its funding.

    Fundamental. Error.

    Actually pathetically poor work done.

    To the Governor,

Rauner was blindsided here by inept Staff and Crew work, and in a place he (Rauner) should not be where he can ultimately embarrass himself by 1) lack of knowledge of what he’s doing, and 2) speaking with true regret, like he was so misinformed, he felt he DID comer them, and showing “remorse” as to not understanding his (Administration’s) own fallout.

How that Staff and Crew allowed this to happen…

    Conplete, inexcusable, political malpractice…

… this time I can’t “blame” Rauner for this incident. That’s how awful this malpractice is by the Staff and Crew.

  7. To the post- the governor zeroed out alternative education that last two years. So he should have known.

For the record, nobody is getting getting “Full Funding”.

Our media is not astute enough (or cares enough) to go beyond the political banter and perform a simple check to discover that we are not getting full funding.

Not even for GSA. We have to set aside money in GSA to cover a Special Education funding miscalculation by the ISBE.

Transportation funding is at about 30%.

And that is just a guess since two months into the fiscal year we do not have the final guesstimate from the ISBE. Last year we got that in October. Inconveniently after our budgets are required to be approved and submitted to the ISBE.

  10. I am so confused, if this is a huge staff failure, where are the superstars? I thought that 1.4% hired his over paid superstar staff to solve all of the problems in the State instead of making him look foolish.

  11. Fact check.
There is a lot he doesn’t know, but as long as he roams around trashin’ workers it never comes up. Since he was killin’ time waitin’ for a SuperStar to ferry the Harley down to the fair he wandered into school. Wait till he starts gettin’ feed back on his new pledge for community mental health services. Those folks have been pulverized by the BigBrain and the SuperStars

  12. This is supposed to be his signature issue. Hilarious that he doesn’t even know the basics.

  13. Sorry, I’m giving Gov. Rauner a pass on this one - as someone who will vote for a mop before I vote for him in 2018.

The article says they’d been trying to schedule a tour for quite a long time and Gov’s office kept having to reschedule. I chalk this up to a crowded public schedule and miscommunication between staff and principal.

Was this horrible, fire-able staff work? Absolutely. Don’t send him there talking about funding when they’re not part of the deal. Was this Rauner being a nimrod and not asking enough questions? Definitely. But this doesn’t seem to be the cause of a Governor’s blind ignorance to the issues.

  14. So for once he is on the other side of his tone deaf glad handing. There have been numerous events were 1.4% announced a funding cut for the very group he was going to be praising.

  15. Mr/Ms Curious
“Crowded schedule” who are you kidin’
There nothin’ these people do that could be described as “crowded” The bottom line is after 2 years BigBrain continues to be clueless on what his damagin’ plans have.

  16. The more you tighten your grip, the more school systems will slip through your fingers.

Comment by Timmeh Monday, Aug 29, 16 @ 4:06 pm

  17. The “Superstars” aren’t around. They are all not being involved in campaigns that he’s not an integral part of. Makes sense that he doesn’t know about school funding, he doesn’t even know he’s paying the entire bill for the campaign.
