Munger puts Rauner’s $1 million contribution to good use

Posted in:

* Man, that’s a good ad

* As I’ve already told subscribers, Susana Mendoza tries to tie Munger to Rauner and Trump and actually uses the topic of legislator paychecks against Munger in her first negative TV spot

* But Munger’s first negative ad is also pretty good

Your thoughts?

…Adding… From Munger’s campaign…

Rich,

Just wanted to add two things.

1) For whats it’s worth, saw Wordslinger’s comments about hired actors but those are all [Munger] volunteers

2) Susana really went out of her way to cut up and isolate that audio for her commercial. Here is the interview with Tom Miller where he is acknowledging Leslie’s actions in delaying the payments to politicians before the statement.

The audio

  1. Best positive ad of the election.

  2. How is Mendoza getting away with that negative ad? Clearly Munger was explaining the old policy, not the new policy that she created. I hope Munger turns that into some earned media somehow for Mendoza being less than truthful.

  3. The cartoon-style words in the negative ad leave a mark. Good stuff.

  4. I dont support Munger/Rauner and his buying of elected officials. I think they dont deserve any attention other than negative.

Comment by Mal Thursday, Oct 20, 16 @ 12:26 pm

  5. Yikes, Munger’s Ad is really solid.

Munge will have the dollars to drill that message… and probably the dollars to bury Mendoza with the negative too.

    Over and over and over…

If Mendoza pulls this out, it won’t be because of her cracker-Jack Crew. It will be in spite of them.

Democrats and Labor ate the ones with the POTUS universe that will be the factors.

    Munger’s Top Ad

B+, A-… then of course an F too,

The B+, A-… Munger comes off likeable, rallying support, it has kids, some diversity, and Munger looks less… North Shore

Withholding pay, even back of the line is an F to the governing. The statute and constitution are clear. That, and every other state worker is getting paid.

    So, as an Ad, it’s a B+, A-

    Mendoza’s Ad

    Solid B

The quote works, but Mendoza has been late to TV and Munger has saturated that Munger has already stopped legislator pay. It’s been in ALL the papers, news, wherever.

It tries to muddy the argument, and Mendoza seems likeable and thoughtful, but too short to own an almost clearly defined issue Munger sits on.

    Munger Negative

    B-, C+

It’s there to drop Mendoza’s numbers. Nothing really special except the “comic book” feel.

Passing grade, and doing the work to lower Mendoza, yeah, but not a game changer.

  6. Munger’s ads have (for me) been the highlight of this otherwise awful election season. The super hero, er villain, ad was awesome. I love comic book movies and shows and it really hit the high points.

Mendoza’s ads have been pretty good, too, but if Munger keeps getting the cash and hitting the ratings points then she will drown out Mendoza.

The problem with races like Treasurer or Comptroller is that they require paid and earned media to be effective.

Comment by Team Sleep Thursday, Oct 20, 16 @ 12:32 pm

  7. Mendoza’s use of Munger’s quote is so shameful. Munger was explaining why she put the legislators in line with everyone else by setting the stage for what had been happening. To accuse her of purposely prioritizing politicians’ pay is a sick perversion. Smells desperate

Comment by hot chocolate Thursday, Oct 20, 16 @ 12:32 pm

  8. That comic book negative ad knocks the stuffing out of Mendoza’s claims that she will be an independent fiscal watchdog.

    Comment by Louis G. Atsaves Thursday, Oct 20, 16 @ 12:35 pm

  9. The Munger ad certainly is expensive, with all the actors and different setups. But I think there’s a credibility issue when politicians hire actors to read scripts to say how great they are.

The ad is almost a carbon-copy of the Rauner image ad. I’m guessing the same crew produced them both.

They figured out the need for diversity on this one, at least.

But, seriously — do you know any black dudes who get their hair cut by white dudes? Not in my neighborhood.

Maybe it’s a North Shore thing.

Comment by wordslinger Thursday, Oct 20, 16 @ 12:37 pm

  10. I thought the cartoon effects would be annoying, but that was a really impressive ad.

Comment by NIU Grad Thursday, Oct 20, 16 @ 12:40 pm

  11. NIU - it certainly pops. Most negative ads look like a gray sky background in a Glamour Shots photo shoot. Pretty meh. But that really caught my eye. And if catches the eye then it can catch the ear.

Comment by Team Sleep Thursday, Oct 20, 16 @ 12:51 pm

  12. Munger’s ads were solid. Mendoza’s was disingenuous.

Comment by Deft Wing Thursday, Oct 20, 16 @ 1:06 pm

  13. If you’re going to go the comic strip route, doing so in an intellectual way can be effective. That ad is. Very much. The first one is solid too. It has a wonderful pace, but it keeps pounding a strong understandable message. Well concepted, well executed and well produced. Those kind do cost some serious cash.

Mendoza’s ad is very good too. One thing I would criticize is that she proclaims being “a taxpayer watchdog” with an image at that moment that doesn’t complement such a claim. In a way, it even refutes it. The imagery almost screams day care provider more than any financially responsible tax watchdog. That being said, everything else on the ad is well done. She takes Munger out of context, but that’s not even a rule anymore.

  14. Glad to know Rauner’s wingman’s team is following Cap Fax comments with bated breath, so whose kid volunteered to be filmed swimming under water?

Comment by Precinct Captain Thursday, Oct 20, 16 @ 1:09 pm

  15. This is the most relevant Wordslinger has been in a decade.

Comment by Thunder Fred Thursday, Oct 20, 16 @ 1:20 pm

  16. In 2006 JBT was praising Quinn in a Sunday presser. Blago took her words and turned into a negative ad basically making it seem as she hated veterans. So before everyone goes crazy on Mendoza, remember one very important truth - politics is about winning, governing is about trying to do good. You play the card you have to in order for a win.

Comment by Downstate GOP Faithless Thursday, Oct 20, 16 @ 1:23 pm

  17. Indeed, the Munger positive ad is probably the best political ad I have seen in a long time and I loved the comic book feel of the negative one.

Another good thing going for Munger is that her negative ad was correct while Mendoza’s negative ad was taking it clear out of context, anybody who pays attention would know that, but in an election cycle where everyone is trying to categorize their opponent as a protector of child molesters, it was pretty tame. False, but tame.

    19 more days….

Comment by Ahoy! Thursday, Oct 20, 16 @ 1:34 pm

  18. Leslie’s ads are solid. Mendoza did a good job of chopping up what Leslie said and turning it to negative though. Makes me sick.

When all is said and done, how much is Trump going to motivate Dems to vote against him in 2.5 weeks? A body in the polling booth for Hillary is likely a body in the polling booth for Susana.

Comment by well then Thursday, Oct 20, 16 @ 1:35 pm

  19. Mendoza’s credibility is in the gutter. As despicable as some of the Proft mail and DPI stuff talking about Republican state legislators cutting Social Security. Truly shameless.

  33. I have a few relatives visiting from out of state. They are not attuned to IL politics at all but are fairly politically savvy in general and have certainly see their share of political ads. I had watched it several times and had an impression or hunch about Mendoza’s ad that I wanted to test. So I asked these visitors to view the Mendoza ad and tell me what they felt/thought. Here is what they said: They had no idea what office Susanna was running for or what its function is. They didn’t get from the ad how the quote from that other person related to Mendoza and wondered if, in fact, that other woman was so terrible at the job (whatever it is) what Susana was proposing to do different other than be a “watchdog”. They were pretty amazed that in Il we elect watchdogs. Bottom line–it’s really not a very good ad.
