Because… Madigan!

Posted in:

* BND

“Mike Madigan has managed to suck all of the life, energy and money out of this state, to the extent that we are now bankrupt,” [Rep. Dwight Kay (R-Glen Carbon)] said. “We’re penniless. In my view, he needs to go, and we need to hit the restart button in Illinois. Mike Madigan is a roadblock to bipartisanship.” […]

“The first thing we need to do to get the budget balanced is to see that Mike Madigan goes home,” Kay said.

* Sometimes, both sides kinda do it

Sensing the disdain in Southern Illinois for the Springfield brawl between Gov. Bruce Rauner and Democratic House Speaker Michael Madigan, both Rep. Dan Beiser and his challenger, Wood River Township Supervisor Mike Babcock, are distancing themselves from “Chicago politicians” and attempting to appeal to voters in District 111 through what they believe are sensible approaches to government.

“The middle-class families of the metro-east are under assault from Chicago politicians and a governor who is seeking to drive down the wages of workers and decimate the programs that many folks rely on,” Beiser wrote in response to a BND questionnaire.

Babcock made a similar attempt to cast blame for the Illinois budget crisis, in which the state has gone for more than a year without funding for a variety of services, but put the emphasis on Democrats.

“I want to protect our families from the reckless tax-and-spend policies of Mike Madigan,” Babcock wrote in response to the questionnaire.

* And sometimes, it doesn’t even make sense

Democratic incumbent state Sen. Laura Murphy and Republican challenger Mel Thillens fended off accusations from one another about being beholden to party leaders and special interests during a public debate in Des Plaines.

The campaign for the 28th Senate district seat has grown in visibility in recent weeks with TV commercials, radio spots and mailers funded by party money and super PACs.

During a debate Wednesday night at Des Plaines City Hall, Murphy criticized Thillens for receiving “dark money” from Liberty Principles PAC, which released a commercial last week claiming House Speaker Mike Madigan has helped fund Murphy’s campaign. Murphy said she hasn’t received “one cent” from Madigan or the Democratic Party of Illinois, of which he is chairman, and her campaign filed a cease-and-desist order to have the commercial taken off the airwaves.

* More on this topic from the esteemed Kerry Lester

A look at Murphy’s most recent campaign finance filings shows no direct contributions from Madigan or the campaign funds he controls, though it shows contributions from other Democratic House members. Proft tells me he’s standing by the ads. “We won’t cease and desist telling the truth about Laura Murphy,” he says.

  2. Rep. Kay is free to propose a balanced budget right now. He doesn’t have to clear it with anyone.

It must be sad, at any age, spending your days persuading people that you’re helpless to be of any use in solving problems because… something.

What a way to make a living.

  3. “Mike Madigan has managed to suck all of the life, energy and money out of this state, to the extent that we are now bankrupt,”

My question for Rep. Kay is what are his top ten items to cut and by how much. The budget for Illinois has effectively been out of balance for years so there must be lots of places to cut, correct.

  4. Dear Sen. Murphy,
Money is fungible. If Madigan gave $$ to those Democratic House members and then they turn around and gave you money it is not a false claim that Madigan gave you money. It may be slightly laundered, but it’s Madigan money none the less.

Once this cycle is complete it will be very interesting to see how the money was funneled to each candidate, on both sides. We are all aware what Rauner is doing through Durkin and HRO but Madigan is doing it as well through members to other members. Look at the recent AFSCME~Washington DC dollars flowing into Illinois.

Sure is a great time to be in media sales in Illinois.

  6. Although I do not live in any of these downstate districts I have seen some postings here and follow the St. Louis media.

Getting very vicious with some of the attack ads.

Can’t wait to see what Bob Romanik starts to do with his $2 million campaign funds !!!!!!!

  7. After years, Madigan has finally become a real negative for his party’s candidates.

  8. “After less than 2 years, Rauner became a real negative for his Raunerite candidates.”

Why no Ads with Members of the General Assembly and Rauner?

Why? I mean, it’s not even 2 years… and Rauner is THAT toxic?

    Hmm.

  9. Laura Murphy would be a small target compared to actual House candidates who have been given a boatload of services/money by Madigan. sure, money can be sent to one source who then sends to another. but straight up give is out there. and that is news.

  10. No, Dwight, what is a “roadblock to bipartisanship” is your 100% lockstep with a Governor who won’t negotiate a budget or appropriations with out Turnaround Agenda reforms which cripple your opposition.

Dwight Kay. You stand next to the Governor

    Always

    That makes you,

    A partisan hostage taker.

The damage to SIUE is do to you.

The damage to private social service agencies in your district is due to you.

The damage to companies doing business with the state not getting paid is due to you.

The reason why I get collection calls from the orthodontist even though we have paid our share but the state has not, is due to you.

You are jointly responsible Dwight Kay because you stand with Rauner.

Hostage takers don’t get to whine and complain when their demands aren’t met and hostages start to die.

YOU TOOK THE HOSTAGES IN THE FIRST PLACE
    DWIGHT!

YOU PLACED THEM IN THAT SITUATION!
