A federal judge in Illinois has refused to move Aaron Schock’s corruption case from Springfield to Peoria at the former congressman’s request.
The 35-year-old Schock is accused of using government and campaign money to subsidize a lavish lifestyle, as well as pocketing thousands of constituents’ dollars. The (Peoria) Journal Star reported Wednesday that U.S. District Judge Sue Myerscough said in her opinion that keeping the case in Springfield doesn’t hurt Schock, but that it could delay other cases she is hearing.
Schock requested the move last month, arguing that the Peoria court was more convenient and appropriate. Prosecutors didn’t want the case moved.

I understand how Schock’s trail would be more convenient for him if it was held in Peoria, but please explain how the court in Peoria would be more appropriate. Thanks

The brief submitted by the Fed arguing to keep the trial in Springfield was nothing short of mockery at the expense of Schock. It detailed the many countries he has gone to since he was indicted and then said that Springfield was a short 72 miles from Peoria. The Feds have got him by the short ones and they are reveling in it. I find it to be quite satisfying, myself.

For Schock — better chance of a jury made up of loyal Schock voters.
For the court and all other citizens of the Central District, the state of Illinois, and the U.S.? — it wouldn’t be.

Schock might be advised that his legal expense monies would be much more smartly spent negotiating which federal prison was “more convenient and appropriate” for his family to come and visit him for the next decade. /s
(I almost have a little irrational sympathy for how dumb this kid has been. What a stupid spot to have put yourself.)

@LizPhairTax: His lawyers are being paid for by campaign funds. Why would you expect that his mileage isn’t being reimbursed, as well?

Schock is still popular in and around Peoria and, if he has lost any of his big local supporters it hasn’t been many. No surprise that he wanted it in Peoria, still a supportive base.

I’m pretty sure Schock used to have a district office across the intersection from Myerscough’s courthouse, so a Springfield venue shouldn’t be unduly burdensome on him.
