* Gov. Rauner was asked today if he had a contingency plan in place in case he doesn’t get a full budget or a stopgap budget…
We’ll get, we’ll get things done.
“How can you say that?” a reporter asked…
Because I think in the end a majority of members of the General Assembly will do the right thing. Everything that we’re advocating has strong bipartisan support… We haven’t yet, but change is hard… I’m frustrated. I’m not the most patient person in the state, but I’m very persistent.
And then he went on to talk yet again about how raising taxes won’t solve anything and how growth is a must. And then he claimed, yet again, that several Democrats privately support his ideas without naming anybody. And then he changed the subject.
However, subscribers know a little about his fallback plan - and it’s all bad for Chicago and for certain Democratic legislators with state facilities.

Until Rauner stands on stairs with 60 House and 30 Senate members, and note, for that to happen, Democrats will have to be on those stairs…
… Rauner is as phony as idea that “it’ll work out” smugness.
Rauner can’t get 60 and 30.

By state facilities, I hope you don’t mean public higher education. And like others on this board, I’ve wondered why Rauner can’t get all his Republican and Democratic supporters in a room, demonstrating that the required number of votes to pass any TA items exists in this coalition, and just get on with it.

When Chicago State and Eastern Illinois University both close and Western Illinois University loses its certification(s), ask that question again.
It won’t be long.
They’ll write about the RaunerS destruction and that book will be found at the Rauner Library… at Dartmouth.

Rauner answered this as well as any Governor might. He cannot continue to negotiate if he publicly undercuts his own position by showing a lesser option.
His more accurate answer might have been: “Yes we have a backup plan, but I won’t tell you what it is.” How would that play?

Your first sentence is simply ridiculous. If that is good enough for you, so be it. The second begs the question…can one who has thus far refused to negotiate, continue to negotiate?

Remember how Quinn used a bunch of facility closings to help cut/balance the budget and the voters in those areas totally blamed their legislators for the closings and gave none of the blame to Quinn and how he cruised to re-election in 2014? Yeah, me neither.

Before implementing a term limit law maybe we should make sure that if we do it’s not later thrown out by the courts like the pension reform law was. It’s my understanding that term limit laws have been thrown out by courts in several other states already. But hey, if it makes the Governor more popular with the public lets go ahead and waste time on it. It’s not like there are more important issues to solve, like a budget.

We don’t need term limits now. Term limits have nothing to do with the budget. They are just ways for Rauner to remake the political landscape. Rauner’s also tryin’ by eliminating union fair share fees and weakening Democrats’ big supporters.
All this pain and crisis for…term limits? It would be laughable if it wasn’t so cruel.

The Gov is just not a smooth spokesperson, which is certainly no crime. He often times seems uncomfortable even during scripted messages, and things only get worse in Q & A instances when he needs to go off-the-cuff.
His answer about a lack of a back-up plan was pretty bad and his constant talk about Dems that secretly support him is beyond a lame non-sequitur now.
He needs to get better at messaging …. especially if things go from (very, very) bad to worse — which seems to be inevitable.

Question:
Governor, you have dumped millions of dollars into your “Blame Madigan” campaign and into tying Democratic legislators and even potential gubernatorial contenders to Mike Madigan.
Won’t the effectiveness of this campaign be diminished by an actual budget deal?
If so, what is your incentive to actually negotiate a budget?

The “strongest signal” Rauner has sent to job creators is that he allowed electric rates to go higher then states like Iowa which has a lot of wind power available at cheaper rates. At the same time, he is allowing COMED to block competition that is trying to bring some of that Iowa wind power into Illinois, (the Rock Island Clean Line Project). The message to job creators: If you want that cheaper power for your business, you will need to locate your business across the river in Iowa.

I’m in agreement with Ducky. How does he get re-elected with no accomplishments to point to? Especially when he goes out of his way to openly antagonize the Chicagoland area, where the majority of voters live? Say he does target areas in and around Chicago and college towns when implementing spending to target D areas - some of these folks either voted for him over Quinn, or didn’t bother to vote in the Gov race. That doesn’t usually reoccur when openly antagonizing them. Plus his right to work obsession won’t be glossed over this time like it was in 2010. Plus Rahm isn’t going to help him out this time. He will need to get at least some support from Chicago and the burbs. This isn’t the south where he can have a friendly SOS or election board change a bunch of rules in order to suppress minority voting.
The cowardly Illinois media establishment will still keep serving him softballs and endorsements at every turn, and he’ll still have gobs of money for commercials but I still don’t see how that can be enough for him to win in 2018.

Are term limits going to bring desperately needed funds to my university? Is redistricting going to keep more employees from losing their jobs at my work place. Is the proposed turn around agenda doing anything to keep the approximately 16,000 students who annually leave Illinois from going across our state lines? No, I didn’t think so.
For the love of Pete, it is time to open your eyes and see what you are doing to higher education in our state!

Grand Avenue do you know how ridiculous that is. First, the Governor is the one who more than tripled his income last year while doing business with the state. Second, Madigan’s law practice is appealing the value of the property assessments, not the rate of the property tax levy by local governments. Not only would a property tax freeze not hurt his practice, it could very well help it.

Actually Bruce, raising taxes is essential to solving the structural deficit in Illinois. The number one problem facing the state of Illinois is the budget. You can get to 60 and 30 with a budget of cuts and taxes, but not for the TA. Do what is doable and also most important.
