Governor Bruce Rauner today released the following statement on Democratic leaders embracing economic changes:
“After two years, both Democratic leaders finally agree that we must have a balanced budget with economic changes to increase our competitiveness to grow jobs. That’s an important positive step. Now let’s come together on a bipartisan basis to ensure all proposals truly take the state in a better direction.”
That’s a very good and measured response. The governor focused exclusively on the fact that Madigan has finally appeared to say he’s willing to do some economic reforms along with a real budget.
Madigan’s stopgap budget proposal the House passed this week is likely going nowhere in the Senate, which has its own grand plan. Madigan could pass his property tax freeze plan again and send that across the building along with a stopgap to try and force Rauner’s hand. But it’s highly doubtful that Senate President Cullerton and Senate GOP Leader Radogno would expose Chicago and other municipalities and school districts to a permanent property tax freeze just to get an inadequate 6-month budget. They have their own plan, and they’re sticking to it. Madigan is boxed for now. It’ll be interesting to see what comes next.

Madigan made a statement. Rauner measured a response making Madigan’s statement the marker, boxing Madigan in to his statement.
Maybe if you can’t understand this and other things also go over your head, that may speak more about you than those making reference to things you admittedly don’t comprehend(?)

You’ve posted a lot of clueless comments here, but that takes the cake.
First of all, he doesn’t do anything “without hesitation.” The dude waited like 9 hours to make a statement about Blagojevich’s arrest, for crying out loud.
Secondly, he has members he has to deal with, and many of those members are sick to death of this impasse and want a full budget.

Possibly, but this is a far more effective approach than “boss Madigan”. If Rauner can somehow show that he’s been able to reach a palatable agreement with Cullerton it puts far more pressure on Madigan than the non-stop campaign efforts. If the goal is to isolate Madigan and paint him as an obstructionist than the boxed in approach works quite well.

Nice response by Governor Rauner. Pretty good week for him so far…Senate Democrats starting to put their name on specific details, a public offer from AFSCME, and Madigan talking about reforms. I continue to think Rauner’s a genius and hope he chooses to lock in some budgetary and regulatory accomplishments out of all this.

CI, I’d prefer the ole stallion keep it inside the gate and the gate closed. Going to work on getting rid of that mental image.
Back in the day, the Giants had a tradition when they would take the bus from their hotel to games at Wrigley; they’d stop at the Gen. Sheridan-on-his-mount statue at Belmont and the Drive and tag with orange paint the most prominent feature of the rearing stallion.
The next day, some poor schmuck from streets and san would have to, um, rub off the vandalism, as passing drivers honked and jeered.

When the senate made their move, it forced the hand of MJM and Rauner. MJM has a lot of members who want a deal and to be for something. I think that is what the MJM speech was all about. The devil is always in the details, but Rauner’s response kept this pot full of stuff simmering. MJM held firm and that is why Rauner’s TA items have been way paired back and Rauner has held firm which is why MJM may accept a grand bargain including a few reforms. Still a long way to go, but we may be getting somewhere.

Perhaps the Senate removed the main stumbling block; that being whether Madigan or Rauner would blink first. Now that we’ve got that out of the way, maybe there’s a path to a deal. Then we can move on to carping about the inequities in the deal!
