* I told subscribers a bit about this poll earlier today…
The Illinois Democratic County Chairman’s Association announced that from Monday January 23rd to midnight on Sunday January 29th, it will conduct an online straw poll of its members and Democrats who join the organization via online submission to measure their preference for whom Democrats in Illinois should nominate for Governor.
The straw poll results, once tabulated, will be released to the public the following day on IDCCA’s website and social media channels. The straw poll will run from 10:30am on Monday January 23rd until midnight on January 29th.
“After two years of disastrous management under Governor Rauner and with the impending presidency of Donald Trump, Democrats must offer a positive vision to voters and draw their attention to the numerous well-qualified and exciting candidates who can lead Illinois into a better future,” said IDCCA President and Chairman of the Rock Island County Democrats Doug House.
The straw poll will be the first of its kind in Illinois to express the preference of activists, elected party leaders, and volunteers in all of Illinois’ 102 counties. IDCCA intends to conduct several more polls to continue drawing attention to the Democratic primary race for Governor.
The candidates included in the first straw poll are (in alphabetical order):
• State Senator Daniel Biss
• Congresswoman Cheri Bustos
• Congresswoman Robin Kelly
• Chris Kennedy
• State Senator Andy Manar
• Alderman Ameya Pawar
• J.B. Pritzker
• State Senator Kwame Raoul
• City Treasurer Kurt Summers“Since November, there has been tremendous energy and desire among the people to find a way to fight back. IDCCA and its members across Illinois are prepared to play a leadership role in harnessing this enthusiasm and preparing it for our eventual nominee,” said House.
The straw poll voting will occur via the web at:

Submission of an identifiable and valid email address and an Illinois zip code are the only requirements for membership in IDCCA and for the vote to be counted. This straw poll is not scientific and should not be construed as an accurate measurement of public opinion among Democratic primary voters.

Straw polls are awesome fundraising mechanisms. Not so great as predictors of the future, as President Michelle Bachmann and President Cruz can attest.

Hopefully Pat Quinn gets the message that he isn’t wanted, but my guess is he’ll try to use his populas rethoric about being an “outsider.”

These kinds of activities promote the person with the best name recognition and try to eliminate some names. Presumably, this lessens the amount that the candidates have to spend in the primary.
As we have seen from the last election the Democrats ended up with the candidate that the insiders wanted (HRC) but not who the people wanted (Bernie).
The Republicans went through the very messy process of standing in a circle and having 16 candidates shoot at each other until 1 survived. Did they end up with the correct candidate?? Not my first choice but they did win the election.
Let democracy run it’s course! It’s a messy system but it is better than all of the rest.

I think all the chair’s association is trying to accomplish is increasing its own name id. This isn’t some Machiavellian play by party insiders.

I voted Pritzker because it is a money game, with Manar as Lt. Governor.
I like Manar but am worried about him garnering enough campaign money.

Since the county chairs association is a downstate-based organization, their current membership / email list is weighted heavily to downstate chairs and activities which will give the downstaters listed (Manar, Bustos) a big leg up.

I’m suddenly getting a ton of email from the county chairs — is there an effort afoot to raise their profile to shift attention from Madigan being chair of the state party?
The fact that Madigan holds that position creates a messaging problem for the Dems. The state Dem chairman could and should be the chief attack dog against Rauner right now, but Madigan can’t fill that role because it plays right into the Rauner v. Madigan narrative the GOP is pushing. This is a real problem for the Dems.

Voted for Pritzker because I think he has the best chance against Rauner. I wrote in Robin Kelly at Lt Gov because we need some diversity.

There are some quality candidates in there…Pritzker, Manar, Bustos, Biss and Pawar. Pritzker and possibly Kennedy are the only ones who can match Rauner dollar for dollar.

Bernie people, math! you did not get as close to HRC in the primary as she was to Obama. it’s a fact, not an alternative fact.
nor did he fold gracefully and quickly. he was quicker to write an editorial stating how we should work on certain things with Trump (consult the Tribune) than he was to endorse her. result? the orange nightmare in DC. thanks.

Kwame Raoul w/ John Bradley for Lt.Gov. The Gov needs two key things: 1) understand how gov’t in Illinois works and 2) understand the state budget. Those two would have the best potential to set things right. If the rich guys (Kennedy & Pritzger) love Illinois enough to save it, they should be able to find a way to use their resources to support Raoul.

I voted for Pritzker and for Lt. Governor A.J. Wilhelmi.
Pritzker is committed to early childhood, a proven job creator, business tech incubators and has the money to compete with Rauner. A.J. would energize the Will County base, knows Medicaid/healthcare, great personality, has experience in the legislative branch (served as vice chairman of the Senate Agriculture & Conservation Committee and served on Transportation, Education, Appropriations II, Gaming and Environment Committees)and he currently represents over 200 hospitals and health systems that have been hurt by Rauner’s lack of budget.

I see your point. I am just making an argument that she won a ton of states in the primary that she wasn’t going to actually win in the general. But I agree, the person with the most number of votes is the “people’s choice”.

Thanks, Amalia … I think it’s a winner … Kennedy has been very well received in downstate areas like DuQuoin and the Southern 20, Rock Island, Kankakee, Springfield … His speech to 2,000 people at the Rock Island County Labor Day event went over very well … Bustos brings a lot of talent to the ticket and - together - they could network it and raise adequate resources.

Voted Biss. Not Madigan’s puppet, smart, and respected by members. I think people are overweighting the money issue; Rauner didn’t beat Quinn because he had more money. Even Trump whipped several GOP opponents who spent more. But don’t folks want somebody who actually knows our state government and can articulate a vision to solve our current problems as an alternative to Rauner’s Turnaround Agenda? I just don’t see the Cook County base rallying around a billionaire…it’s tone deaf on what’s going on politically in Chicago.

HRC had 602 “Super Delegates” vs 48 for Bernie.
“Regular delegates” were 2205 for HRC vs 1846 for Bernie.
Neither candidate got to 2,382 needed for nomination without the Supers.
A case could easily be made that Bernie could have won the nomination.

Gosh! the democrats should stop it and unite! hillary somehow lost to a man who had never run for office before, and said and proposed a multitude of things most americans disagreed with. now is not the time to defend hillary, she had her chance to run and she lost. Now is the time to move on and devise a winnable strategy to take on trump.

But Clinton clearly had more, and she ran up a pretty healthy margin in the popular vote.

Only if the supers had all flipped to him. Using party insiders to overturn the popular vote really isn’t the move “the people’s choice” makes.
