Question of the day

Posted in:

Instead of the standard question today, I’d like to ask you a favor.

My intern Paul Richardson’s last day is tomorrow. He may be sticking around to do Morning Shorts for a while, but he’s leaving town on Saturday. Here’s what I wrote about him in this morning’s Capitol Fax…

My faithful and trusted intern, Paul Richardson, is leaving us tomorrow. Paul is going back to UIUC to finish his master’s degree and then perhaps to law school. I don’t know what I’m gonna do without that young man. He’s been a real treasure. Dependable, smart, honest, you name it. If you’re in Springfield this evening, head to Boone’s after session and help us send Paul off with gusto.

First, please try to make it to Boone’s tonight if you can.

Second, let’s all wish Paul well in comments. Thanks.

  1. Paul,
Good luck and thanks, even if you didn’t link to my blog enough in Morning Shorts… :-)

Seriously, if the kids didn’t have soccer tonight I would consider driving down to Springfield to ‘Visit the In-Laws’ and buy you a beverage.

    Thanks

  3. Good luck, Paul. You will be missed.

If you end up going into public service, I thank you for that. It can be a thankless job, after all. But please try to hold onto to as many ideals of statesmanship and citizenship and service as you can.

  4. Good luck, and, as I said once before, Write a Book.
Could be a big career-booster, whether you choose journalism, law, or something else.

  7. Paul, Best wishes as you continue your education. I trust your internship was fruitful and fun. Your contribution to Cap Fax helps keep me out of Springfield, and for that I’m thankful.

I’ll not be at Boone’s tonight to wish you well, but I will have a beverage in your honor to help send you off.

    Good Luck!

  9. I have had the opportunity to talk to Paul on several occasions at the Capital and other Springfield establishments. He is an extremely polite and bright young man, and I am sure Rich will miss his hard work.

Paul, good luck in your acedemic endeavors, and who knows, maybe we’ll see you back down here when you are all finished.

  12. Paul, keep working hard. Stay in school; the biggest mistake I made was stopping after my bachelor’s. Great job on the posts and commentary and good job of keeping Rich in line.

  13. I see that the brains and looks of Capitol Fax is departing. Rich, make sure you get Paul to sign a “non-compete” clause!

Paul, I wish you well and the biggest compliment I can give you is that you are a great writer and I hope you put that talent to good use.

  23. Paul,
If you haven’t connected on a personal level with Chapin Rose do so — and get to know some of the younger crowd in the political and legal circles in Champaign County. It’s the next logical step in building your resume and career! Good luck …

  27. Paul, thanks for putting your education into
practice in the real world. all those early
links to articles and your detailed reports
contribute to the good in Illinois. It may
not seem like there is much of that out there
now, but, you are on the side of the good.
keep a finger on the pulse, and get back in the

    Great job my friend.

  30. Thanks for doing such a fine job encapsulating the news stories. Your efforts saved me a great deal of time and helped me to realize there is a world outside Chicago. Good luck to you Paul.

  32. You’re leaving? Were you going to say goodbye? I can do long distance if you can.

You’ll be back. Probably in a couple weeks when the state shuts down and your public college has to close its doors.

    I won’t be ignored Paul!

When they’re done at the Statehouse or after 5ish, whichever comes later, I think. Not sure I want to start drinking at 2 o’clock.

  38. Paul,

You’ve been a great addition to CapFax, and it’s going to be very difficult to replace you.

Try not to snicker when your professor tries to tell you how s/he thinks state government REALLY works!

Drop me an email when you get settled and I will treat for a couple beers at one of the 312 area code establishments.

  40. Paul, as Rep. Fritchey has already reminded you, remember your code!!! (or don’t lose your key, whatever the reason was that you almost froze to death). Sorry I won’t be in Springfield to wish you goodbye (or get you home).
I think Rich and the rest of us have greatly benefited from having you with us. Your talents will be of value wherever or whoever you end up working for. Don’t sell your self short. Make sure Rich is the last guy you work for on the cheap.
Good luck in Champaign. Maybe we can all take a road trip and meet you at Murphy’s for a beer.

Comment by Objective Dem Thursday, Jul 26, 07 @ 2:39 pm

  43. Paul, You have an excellent ability to truly listen, observe and accurately communicate those observations with strong writing. These are gifts not many possess. You definitely helped Rich up the coverage. We’ll have some fun tonight.

Comment by DC Thursday, Jul 26, 07 @ 2:42 pm

  44. Best of luck Paul. Part of me wonders why you’d want to leave just when things are about to turn even more bizarre LOL. You will be an invaluable asset for whomever you choose to work. If you ever run for office, let us know.

  49. Paul, you’ve taken great advantage of your excellent writing skills here on the Blog and I’ve enjoyed reading your work. I was on the same track as you (quite a few years ago) but never went on to Law School. I hope you stay the course.
Good luck in my home town. AA jr. is also at UIUC so I am in town frequently.

    Hope to see you tonight.

  50. “assistant state’s attorney Susan Lucas objected, as did an unidentified female lawyer apparently representing the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services”.

Did you mean assistant attorney general?

The state’s attorney’s office does not represent the State of Illinois Department of Children and Family Services.

Comment by This state is sorry Thursday, Jul 26, 07 @ 4:50 pm

  51. Paul:
I would suggest that you quit school and become a full time slave for Capt. Fax. Forget the brights lights of the big city or fat cash from the lawyer life.
Hopefully the quality fall off of the Fax and Blog will not be noticed. Most of us understand that Rich has never fully recovered from the buscapade with GRod and his brain trust.
You picked a great year to observe this process. It should make you run a long, long way away from government of all shapes and sizes.
Good luck and remember you have plenty of friends in state government who will be happy to bend the rules for you.

Comment by Reddbyrd Thursday, Jul 26, 07 @ 5:26 pm

  52. You’re famous, Paul! You WILL have a great career, that’s a given!
