* City’s absentee ballots probed - Constituents being questioned about election, Stone says
Ald. Bernard Stone (50th) said Tuesday that the city’s inspector general is investigating absentee ballots cast in the election earlier this year that returned him to the City Council for a 10th term in a probe that Stone contended “is occurring all over the city of Chicago.”
“Some of you aldermen had better be advised that [Inspector General David Hoffman] is going all over different wards in this city issuing subpoenas to various people in this city,” Stone said at a meeting of the council’s Budget Committee. “I didn’t know whether he had authority to do that, but he’s doing it.”
But other aldermen said later they were unaware of any investigations in their wards and added that their colleague’s surprise announcement was the first hint they had gotten of a probe. […]
Stone said he has talked to attorneys, whom he declined to name, who have told him they are representing people in other parts of the city who also have received subpoenas. The activity began about four weeks ago, he said.

The STudent Journalist protections comes across as a bad idea. if its a paper funded and supported by the school, then the school gets control. Just like Rich can control what appears in his publication or on this site. if its not funded or supported by the school, then the school has no control anyway so no need for the law. Imagine a free speech law that said a web-site proprietor could not sensor forum or blog comments.

Student newspapers should work under the guidelines the school sets, per the Hazlewood SCOTUS decision. It is the “owner” of the paper and should have editorial control–just like at a “real” paper. A reporter at the Trib or Sun-Times can’t publish whatever they desire, and student journalists might as well learn early that they can’t, either.
In addition, school newspapers are used as part of the curriculum, and schools have the right to determine the curriculum in their courses.
The “student” newspaper at the U of I, the Daily Illini, is not owned by the university, so its students can publish whatever the owners see fit, but in all cases, the freedom of a student press should be limited by “ownership” in the same way the professional press is limited.

I was discussing the State’s Attorney race with political friends last evening - people who had not made up their minds one way or another.
According to an objective source, Larry Suffredin gave a very impressive presentation at a pre-slating screening session - he had some really outstanding ideas. Reportedly, Tom Allen has a war chest and also significant support from organized labor. Dart’s not running. An informed source suggested that Rogers is unlikely to run. Brookins has hired Mike Noonan. Russ Stuart suggests that a Brookins victory would be the foundation for a future mayoral run, which might be antithetical to JJ Junior’s future plans.
I am supporting Suffredin, but I will vote for whichever Democratic nominee emerges from this strong field of candidates. As far as I am concerned, Tony Peraica is a political pariah, after his egregious conduct on election night.

Question Rich: If Madigan does not bring this to a vote in the near future is everything still on hold ?
I know almost everyone is saying it would be illegal for the governor to transfer funds and spend the money. But would it be doubly illegal to spend funds when the budget is not settled ?

With regards to the Blago v. Madigan suit, Milarod has b-lls of brass. HE didn’t even show up for some sessions he scheduled. If this suit isn’t thrown out as trivial and baseless, we are all doomed.
