* Were voters steered to absentee ballots?

The Cook County state’s attorney’s office is investigating whether Ald. Bernie Stone’s (50th) political organization improperly steered Indian and Pakistani voters toward absentee ballots, according to sources.

Those under investigation include city employees. For now, the probe is limited to Stone’s North Side ward, the sources said. Subpoenas have been issued for witnesses and documents.

  1. Poshard plagarized his Phd dissertation. It doesn’t matter who he is pollitically, he should have his “degree” revoked, he should be fired and live out the rest of his life in disgrace. SIU had no problem firing a professor for copying a 2 page teaching philoosphy. Glenn had no problem firing Wendler for using his OWN work at another institution. Why should Glenn get a pass for a much more egregious offense? Get rid of him. If the University tries to justify or validate this offense it will only further tarnish their already dubious reputation.
Well students, it is wrong to steal other people’s work unless your “plate is too full” and your “committee doesn’t tell you it is wrong” and you are a former Comgressmen with political clout. Then it is ok! In fact, it qualifies you to be President!

  2. Elections/Absentee Ballots/Campaigns really bring out the scum of the earth, don’t they?

  3. Bill,

You know for a fact that Poshard plagiarized his dissertation because…? Poshard has opened his dissertation for review. The Higher Education and Administration department’s suggestion for a review of the document by a broad-based committee is appropriate and should be conducted to settle the matter one way or the other (and broad-based to ensure it is above board).

It seems logical to wait for such a review before sentencing a man to a “life of disgrace.”

  4. Basically his “plagarizing” is rather technical. Some sources were in quotes, but not listed. In one chapter.

That is vastly different from plagarizing.

As for the absentee ballots, WHY would it be wrong? As long as they filled them out themselves.

I am so sure that NEVER happens in Chicago elections.

  5. Fan,
…because he copied large segments of “his” dissertation, admitted he did so, and then made excuses for it. True, some sections were in quotes and not cited but some were not. Not all sources were cited.
He copied other peoples’ work and put his name on it.

  6. Yay, so we can have mangy mutts eating with me. What if someone is allergic (a la peanuts) to dogs? Would they be forced to leave and not the animal? I love my dog, but this is ridiculous.

  7. Chicago Corporation Counsel Mara Georges spewed forth yet another lie. She claimed Inspector General Hoffman signed off on the proposed Office of Compliance when clearly he did not. Georges will say anything to serve her master.

  9. Dolar wasted no time Wonder if Stone is hoping she’ll just go away? Guess not :)

  10. It’s good to see that some attention is being paid to Alderman Stone’s political organization and their methods of “getting out the vote.”
BTW - whatever happened to the complaints about the petition fraud that his people were doing in the polling places, i.e. people having to sign Stone’s petition before they could receive their ballot, during last November’s election? Did the CBOE ever respond to the complaints voiced by both voters and the other candidates in the race?

  11. BTW - whatever happened to the complaints about the petition fraud that his people were doing in the polling places,

In these days of cheap cell phone cameras, why no video of such things? It’s pretty easy to take them with no one seeing…..

Comment by Pat collins Thursday, Sep 6, 07 @ 3:21 pm

  12. I believe it was FOX news went into Winston Towers where one of the incidents occurred (and Alderman Stone lives) and caught them with the petition on the table where the judges were sitting.

  14. Rich Miller doing the Speaker’s bidding once again? Why pull the comments about Noonan and Reyes? Look at the 1st District Victory Funds disclousre reports if you don’t believe me. Everybody knows Noonan ran Stone’s campaign. Noonan even bragged about having won the race before election day. Seems like you always kill the comments you don’t like Rich!

  15. laborguy, please. It wasn’t what you said, it was the invective you used. Have you ever read that paragraph in red at the top of the comment input box?

  16. My comments wer not “rumor” btw. I witnessed Stone workers distributing absentee ballot apps with my own eyes.

Comment by laborguy Thursday, Sep 6, 07 @ 4:41 pm

  17. Whatever, but they were excessively rabid and filled with gratuitous insults.

    Grow up.

  18. Laborguy, my site, my rules. Goodbye.

  19. And despite your pathetic, automatically deleted pleas, I don’t negotiate on this stuff. You did what you did, you pay the price.

Comment by Rich Miller Thursday, Sep 6, 07 @ 5:19 pm

  20. I think Stone is losing it. Why would Stone reveal the his organization was under investigation. He is getting some bad press, and if the probes turn up nothing he is already tainted. I bet you the folks up in the 59th ward are walking around saying “he stole the election.” If the probes turn up nothing its a self inflicted wound, of course if there is something there he is in trouble.

  21. On edit “50th ward”

Comment by shaking my head Thursday, Sep 6, 07 @ 5:43 pm

  22. Just asking, but shouldn’t there be a “statute of limitations” with respect to Poshard’s thesis? I know academia take these issues pretty seriously, but 1983 was an awfully long time ago.

Comment by Captain America Thursday, Sep 6, 07 @ 8:44 pm

  23. Gathering petitions on election day is tremendously effective technique for getting valid signatures. It’s quite easy to do it properly outside the polling place at the legally desiganted distance from the polling place entrance. If Stone’s volunteers cheated, it was pure arrogance and laziness.
