  1. Expect the Cubs to hang on to first and expect the White Sox to hang on to last.

Comment by Establishment Republican Thursday, Sep 6, 07 @ 2:27 pm

  2. Absolutely!

Hey, Hey, no doubt about it, the Cubs are on their way!

Comment by Go Cubbies Thursday, Sep 6, 07 @ 2:28 pm

  3. NO WAY!

They may be in a weak division but they aren’t all that good. Milwaukee and the Cards will finish above them.

Comment by Papa Legba Thursday, Sep 6, 07 @ 2:34 pm

  4. Thank god we are in the weakest division in the Major leagues! go CUBS.

Comment by He makes Ryan Look like a Saint Thursday, Sep 6, 07 @ 2:34 pm

  5. I doubt it, its the cubs!!!!

Comment by independent Thursday, Sep 6, 07 @ 2:42 pm

  6. That beep-beep-beep you hear is the Cubs backing into the division title. Go Cubs!

    Comment by 47th Ward Thursday, Sep 6, 07 @ 2:50 pm

  7. Why would a Sox fan even care about the Cubs?
You should be onto the Bears or an analysis of the sale of the Chicago Fire.
Or since you are bored how about counting the number of times the words “The Illinois Senate is expected to…..” have been written without results.

  8. If you can find some old Mike Royko columns, you’ll get the answer to your question.

Comment by been there Thursday, Sep 6, 07 @ 2:55 pm

  9. Who do you think will be first to jump on the bandwagon with a post season Wrigley Field photo op?

    a) Obama
    b) Clinton
    c) Blago
    d) Rich Miller

Comment by Question for YOU Thursday, Sep 6, 07 @ 2:56 pm

  10. Remember this IS September…the only way to keep them in first is to keep RB out of the stands…(wink-wink)…

Comment by Siyotanka Thursday, Sep 6, 07 @ 2:57 pm

  11. I’m in my 31 season with the Cubs and I bite my nails everytime I think about where they are and how many games they have to go. The only saving grace is Lou Pinella. The Cubs would be in last place if he was not the manager. I truly believe that. The only way they will end up winning is the adjustments he makes down this final streach.
Oh and a 300 million off season payroll didn;t hurt.
And another thing. Thank you St Louis for Jason maquis.

Comment by Mark Johnson Thursday, Sep 6, 07 @ 3:01 pm

  12. The only 2 things my grandfather asked of me:
    1) Be honest
    2) Root against the Cubbies

I have no doubt the Cubs will let us make fun of their full 100 years of glory.

    Go Cards

Comment by Capitalist Pig Thursday, Sep 6, 07 @ 3:04 pm

  13. The Cubs with their talent level should be embarrassed they haven’t pulled far ahead of the Brewers and Cardinals. The Brewers have tried everything they could to drop out of the race and half the Cards’ lineup is out for the year.

Comment by Independent Thursday, Sep 6, 07 @ 3:07 pm

  14. “Question,” I don’t go into that place, so it’s a three-choice question.

Comment by Rich Miller Thursday, Sep 6, 07 @ 3:11 pm

  15. Rational answer: Yes, the Cubs will hold on, they are much better than the Brewers or Cards.

Cub Reality: The Brewers are 6-4 in their last 10, so maybe the tailspin is over. If they play slightly above .500 the rest of the way it’s theirs.

Comment by Independent Thursday, Sep 6, 07 @ 3:15 pm

  17. So, which will happen first:

The cubs be the cubs and screw it up? OR

    the legislature pass a budget?

    Tough call!

Comment by Pat collins Thursday, Sep 6, 07 @ 3:19 pm

  18. Go Sox!

Comment by Leigh Thursday, Sep 6, 07 @ 3:20 pm

  19. 99th time’s a charm! Go Cubs!!

Comment by Suburbs Thursday, Sep 6, 07 @ 3:25 pm

  20. You GOTTA believe! It’s GONNA happen! GO CUBS GO !!!

Comment by Eddy Thursday, Sep 6, 07 @ 3:32 pm

  21. The Reds usually stick a fork in the Cubs anytime they’re still in the playoff race come September. The Cubs play 6 of their last 12 games against the Reds. So, no.

Comment by Bluefish Thursday, Sep 6, 07 @ 3:34 pm

  22. “85% of the world works. The other 15% come out here [to watch day baseball].” - Lee Elia

I think the better question is, “*When* are they going to choke?” because unless they plan on completely shattering our hopes and dreams, they will.

Comment by What planet is he from again? Thursday, Sep 6, 07 @ 3:39 pm

  23. Cub fans buying “It’s Gonna Happen” souvenirs are making the guy who charged Randy Myers on the mound even richer. He does not deserve this fate.

Comment by Independent Thursday, Sep 6, 07 @ 3:44 pm

  24. See you at the playoffs.

Comment by Bartman Thursday, Sep 6, 07 @ 3:44 pm

  25. The Cubs postseason has been the original longstanding “Overtime in Hell”. Go Brewers. . . all baseball fans should go to Miller Park at least once. The tailgating is sublime.

Comment by Jake From Elwood Thursday, Sep 6, 07 @ 3:47 pm

  26. 6-4 Dodgers….YESSSS!!!!

    Comment by S. Illinois Thursday, Sep 6, 07 @ 3:50 pm

  27. Rich can throw out something fun like this and still get more reasoned, educated, informational and worthwhile commentary than the SJ-R’s comments.

Exclamation points and invective rule the day over there. God forbid you submit historical or present-day facts about something, they may not know what to do with it; probably not post it if it does not involve a supermarket or shoe store closing. Or does not have all capital letters or inappropriate punctuation or name-calling.

I learn a lot from The Capitol Fax Blog from a lot of people that have access to all kinds of information about myriads of issues.

No matter if you are a Sox, Cubs or Cards fan, you should be proud of your posts here.

  28. I’m a lifelong suffering Cubs fan. In any other division they would be in 3rd or 4th place. I expect they’ll slip in and out of first place between now and season’s end, by which time they’ll probably have slipped out. I expect the Cards to win the division.

Comment by Chicago Cynic Thursday, Sep 6, 07 @ 3:56 pm

  29. i immediately turned the game off after the 3 run dodger home run. i’m just disgusted. i’m taking down my “w” flag.

  30. Not a chance. Dempster has just blown another save. 6-4 Dodgers.

    Ankiel homers, Cards leading
    Brewers resting today

Comment by Reddbyrd Thursday, Sep 6, 07 @ 4:12 pm

  33. The Cubs’ Losing Streak of near 100 years has become a National Hallmark. In fact Sen Durbin is working on federal legislation to make that Hallmark permanent and illegal to alter in any way. Something to be proud of, no other team has worked so diligently to build such a record. Not even close!

    Comment by A Citizen Thursday, Sep 6, 07 @ 4:13 pm

  34. While you Cubbies fans are buying your playoff tickets, could you pick up some Illini Rose Bowl tickets for AA? I think the odds are about the same, with the Illini slightly ahead since the Zookster about vaporlocked on TV the other night.

    Go Redbirds!

Comment by Arthur Andersen Thursday, Sep 6, 07 @ 4:15 pm

  35. Absolutely … Five games left head to head with the hated Redbirds. The Cards can’t seem to beat the Cubs even when the Cubbies are terrible, so no chance they can do it while the cubs are good.

And to quote a friend of mine … “the funny thing about a cardinals game is that you can never tell if you are going to a baseball game or a NASCAR race!”

Comment by Nick Naylor Thursday, Sep 6, 07 @ 4:45 pm

  36. Rich, this type of Cubs savagery is unneeded. I think we need a series of 19 public hearings to examine and put a human face on your poorly crafted blog topic.
Of course all 19 will be held in Wrigleyville.

Comment by Steve Trachsel's fan club Thursday, Sep 6, 07 @ 4:56 pm

  37. lol

Comment by Rich Miller Thursday, Sep 6, 07 @ 4:57 pm

  38. Why not have 18 in W’ville and one at DuMont’s unfinished museum. I think he was the lst guy to get the royal poker from the BlaggoBlunderBoys

    Comment by Mr. W.T. Rush Thursday, Sep 6, 07 @ 5:09 pm

  39. Q. What do the Cubs and a suntan have in common?

    A. Both come on strong in June and fade in September.

Comment by Trafficmatt Thursday, Sep 6, 07 @ 5:29 pm

  40. I hope so holy cow it would be a beeyootifull to see them play in October

Comment by anon Thursday, Sep 6, 07 @ 5:44 pm

  41. Rich, I will DEFINITELY not call you if I have an extra ticket this year!

Lesson learned from the infamous Bartman game - even if there’s 5 outs to go, they can still find some way to blow it. Aaaagggghhhh…

Already bought our playoff tickets. Hope I won’t have to frame them like the ones we bought in 2001 and never used.

    Comment by 312 Thursday, Sep 6, 07 @ 6:16 pm

  42. Boy, you are desperate.

Comment by mjk Thursday, Sep 6, 07 @ 6:53 pm

  43. yes they can, will they? I dunno. They have the best pitching, they need Lee to hit more homers and their offense to become more consistent.

Comment by Wumpus Thursday, Sep 6, 07 @ 7:51 pm

  44. The Cubs are like its biggest fan Blago. You know the answer.

Comment by keepin up with jones Thursday, Sep 6, 07 @ 7:56 pm

  45. What was the final score for the Cards game? Cubs?
And what was the question? Cardinals Rule !!

    Comment by A Citizen Thursday, Sep 6, 07 @ 8:34 pm

  46. I believe my “screen name” says it all… :)

  47. Is it our problem that you chose not to come up to Chicago for the slating session of the Cook County Democratic Central Committee, which began this morning and ran until about 6 pm at the Palmer House?

No you chose to take it easy, much like the wife of a certain State Representative who chose not to abandon her vacation to Europe, and as a result will apparently be dumped by the Democratic Party leaders!

I am talking about Metropolitan Water Reclamation District Commissioner Cynthia Santos, wife of State Rep. Rich Bradley, who was replaced on the ticket by challenger Dean Maragos. (Fellow incumbents Frank Avila and Kathleen Meany, who were there to present their credentials to the committeemen, were also slated.)

The committeemen still haven’t reach a decision on the hotly-contested race for Cook County State’s Attorney, to replace the retiring Dick Devine. Chicago Ald. Howard Brookins, Jr. (21st) had a plurarity of the weighted vote, but failed to garner the needed majority. Fellow Chicago Ald. Tom Allen (38th) came in second, with Cook County Commissioner Larry Suffredin (D-13th) finishing third.

The committeemen will meet tommorrow afternoon at 2 pm to try to reach a decision in this race.

Comment by Randall Sherman Thursday, Sep 6, 07 @ 9:22 pm

  48. As a Red Sox fan, I could care less.

But no, they won’t hold on. The Brewers will take it now that Ben Shields is healthy. He is as big of a difference-maker as Johan Santana and John Lackey.

Rich, any feelings on the possible contract extension for Ozzie Guillen?
