Poe announces

Posted in:

Capitol Fax readers saw this story already today, but the blog readers haven’t, so here it is.

A central Illinois lawmaker today announced a run for lieutenant governor in 2006.

State Representative Raymond Poe says he is entering the campaign because of what he considers antibusiness policies of current Governor Rod Blagojevich. But he had little criticism for current Lieutenant Governor Pat Quinn.

The Springfield Republican says he would support a plan to fund education through state income taxes rather than local property taxes, something Blagojevich opposes.

Who’s gonna cook the chicken after Ray leaves?

  1. When the journalists from the big city get a hold of Ray it will be a hoot. Ray mangles the English language is a way reminiscent of Harry Caray and George Bush.

  2. Another question — who’s going to run for Ray’s seat in the General Assembly? There are two from Lincoln who could saddle up pretty quickly and would love to give it a run: Carla Bender, current Logan Co. Circuit Clerk, and Jonathan Wright, failed U.S. Senate candidate and current private school principal. Who else?

  3. Scratch that above — I was thinking of Brauer not Poe…

  4. Are we potentially seeing a crop of downstate Republicans all rising up to face the governor? It seems to me the old regionalistic dislike for Chicago is definitely in play here.

And I can guarantee you that Poe wouldn’t try to move the state government from Springfield.

  5. I say Rich Miller should move back to Mechanicsburg and run as Libertarian for Poe’s seat

  6. I think the Dems. should counter with Gary Forby. Just think of the debate for Lt. Gov. No one south of I-80, for that matter maybe Bloomington would understand what either of them said.

  7. We’ve come a long way in 10 years.

We now have a conservative, GOP candidate for statewide office running on Dawn Clark Netch’s education funding platform.

    Wow.

  8. Actually dickhead, it’s only the folks south of I-80 that would understand the debate.

  9. He can still cook the chicken for the Capitol. It’s not like he’d be leaving town.
