* Bloomington Pantagraph

On Tuesday morning, if you want to find the owner of Snapper’s Bar and Grill, Joe Sartie, drop in on him in downtown Clinton. His door will be open.

Sartie is one of a handful of owners struggling with Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s order to close bars and restaurants for indoor seating in an effort to minimize the spread of COVID-19 in the state.

“This is my Alamo,” he said.

Clinton is in DeWitt County, where the public health director told a local radio station late last week “Live your life like you normally would.”

*** UPDATE *** Administrative Code

Section 690.1415 Penalties

(Section 2(k) of the Act)

b) A public health order issued by a certified local health department under this Subpart is equivalent to, shall be enforced as, and carries the same penalty as an order issued by the Department directly.

  5. Could lose liquor license, slots license, maybe even his food license. Might also miss out on any Small Business assistance that might come through in a disaster relief bill at the state and/or federal level(s). He may come to regret this “last stand”.

  6. While what this guy is doing is wrong, I also feel like we need to keep in mind everyone is managing their anxiety about this crisis in different ways. I just think we all need to remember the phrase - Be kind, for everyone is going through something hard.

  7. Not everyone died at Alamo, but point taken.
With the county public health director’s statements on the virus; I doubt they lose food license. Liquor license, electronic gambling, and disaster relief are surely on the wrong side of that burned bridge.
May have felt good to publicly stick it to the man, but in the long run they’ll be singing I fought the law, and law won.

The 15 or so that survived the Alamo probably wouldn’t call their survival a victory. It was a miracle.

The reason we go to the odd “in-law uncle’s house” is that aunt we love shouldn’t be punished, but now is not the time to spend quality time with a man willing to hurt everyone to make a point.

  9. Joe Sartie (and Dave Remmert) remind me of the last holdouts who refuse to leave their property before Mount St. Helens erupted. Only in this instance, we (rather than they) are the ones harmed.

  10. Can’t spell satire without s-a-r-t-i-e.

  11. The comments on the Pantagraph site are a bit shocking. The consensus seems to be that this is nothing but an attempt by the Democrats to punish us.

Comment by Pundent Monday, Mar 16, 20 @ 10:20 am

  12. The State Police should make a raid and forcibly shut down the place/arrest Sartie just to make the point that this is serious.

Just what the heck does he imagine is going on? I’m sorry, but this level of disconnect from reality just boggles my mind.

  14. Capt Fax should start a “yokel” section for these updates

Yes, not good, but keep in mind newspaper comment sections attract the worst people.

Dude. William Travis, Jim Bowie, and Davy Crockett look at you askance. They did not die for your “right” to spread pestilence.

  17. Well, not everyone one was killed at the Alamo.

But the owner should shut down as the Governor has requested.

  18. “The comments on the Pantagraph site are a bit shocking.”

Most commenters on the Pantagraph are completely enclosed in the Limbaugh/Hannity bubble. The are unable to respond to fact-based arguments so they launch ad hominem attacks and goofball rants. Given the trend toward eliminating comment sections in newspapers I wonder why the Pantagraph bothers. Any tiny increment of increased page hits is overwhelmed by comments from the kooks that their limited staff cannot moderate.

  19. Bars were doing an overly brisk business last night and expect they will tonight as well. Just maybe this guy can take a few days off to clean and paint the joint. No NCAA to watch anyway.
