*** UPDATED x4 - Zahdan won’t be appointed *** Madigan resigns effective today

Posted in:

* The official letter…

*** UPDATE 1 *** As subscribers know, there was an attempt to slow this down today. Didn’t work. MJM gonna MJM. Looks like no Latino replacement…

NEW: Sunday 10am Committeemen will meet to choose Madigan successor, hearing Madigan’s favorite to replace him appears to be 13th Ward Superintendent Moeen Zahdan, however this may not sit well with those who want a Latino chosen #MadiganResigns

— Mary Ann Ahern (@MaryAnnAhernNBC) February 18, 2021

Madigan has more than half the weighted vote, so the other committeepersons don’t really matter.

*** UPDATE 2 *** Here’s the meeting notice…

WHAT:
Committee hearing to seek a replacement to the 22nd Illinois House District seat.

WHO:
Anyone interested in seeking to serve as state representative in the 22nd Illinois House District seat can present their resumes and field questions from constituents.

WHERE:
Balzekas Museum ballroom
6500 S. Pulaski Rd.
2nd Fl. North
Chicago, IL 60629

WHEN:
Sunday, Feb. 21
10 a.m.

His district/ward/campaign offices are in the museum building.

*** UPDATE 3 *** Press release…

Congresswoman Marie Newman gave the following statement regarding the resignation of Michael Madigan and the forthcoming process to appoint a successor to his 22nd District State House seat.

“For the first time in more than half a century, Chicago’s Southwest Side will have a brand new state representative. Public officials at every level of government have a fundamental obligation to ensure the voices of 22nd District residents are heard loud and clear when choosing Michael Madigan’s successor. We cannot allow history to repeat itself. Allowing this Individual to handpick his own successor not only shortchanges our residents and effectively shuts them out of the process but also discredits any sense of transparency and inclusion that our government strives for. It is absolutely imperative that this process is open and transparent and that the public is involved at every step so we can finally ensure that the residents of the 22nd District receive the representation they deserve.”

*** UPDATE 4 *** As I just told subscribers, 13th Ward Ald. Marty Quinn says Moe Zahdan will not be getting the appointment.

  1. It’s amazing how so many people wanted this for so long, and now it’s here, and it doesn’t feel real.

  2. Well. What changed in the last 8 hours?

Comment by Perrid Thursday, Feb 18, 21 @ 5:04 pm

  3. I imagine some people will have this framed.

Comment by NIU Grad Thursday, Feb 18, 21 @ 5:04 pm

  4. Wow.

There’s a story for the change?

It’s interesting to the long letter to this short fax.

    Huh.

  6. Don’t worry, Republicans will still use him as an attack until the end of time

  7. While I have popped the Champagne cork, I must admit, it was much more satisfying doing so at 9:30 AM when Blago was arrested.

Comment by Ducky LaMoore Thursday, Feb 18, 21 @ 5:12 pm

  8. So it isn’t because he found out some dude from Texas wasn’t going to be using his full week of a timeshare in Mexico so the rest of the week was open?

Comment by OneMan Thursday, Feb 18, 21 @ 5:25 pm

  9. Madigan’s ward operation isn’t going anywhere. That organization can beat all of those committeemen every day and twice on Sunday. Whomever he puts in as his replacement, that person will be elected and re-elected from now until time eternal.

    Comment by Anon 5:31 Thursday, Feb 18, 21 @ 5:34 pm

  10. Two reasons for the change of heart: 1.) The juicy reason is the G is about to drop the hammer and it isn’t velvet, 2.) What Rich put in the paywall.

Probably the paywall issue but it is intriguing the change from one communique to another.

Comment by Nagidam Thursday, Feb 18, 21 @ 5:36 pm

  11. I cant see him going through the dog and pony show of holding public meetings to pick his replacement when he already knows what he is doing. Why bother? I guess it could give his hand picked choice some cover but with the remap coming up that district is going to change dramatically. And if Rich is correct about the possible replacement his district will move more southwest into the suburbs to pick up Oak Lawn, Bridgeview, Hickory Hills and Palos. Most of Madigan’s current constituents will have a new representative one way or another in two years anyway.

  12. Does Shirley get to stay on the Illinois Arts Council? /s
In one of those biggest winners/losers lists following events like these, she’s gotta up there in terms of losers of stature now.

Comment by The Rabbit Thursday, Feb 18, 21 @ 5:46 pm

  13. ===Does Shirley===

    People actually like Shirley.

Will Eileen Malkevich (of ALPLM infamy during the Quinn administration and early in Rauner) grace the meeting with her presence?

Comment by Essential State Employee Thursday, Feb 18, 21 @ 5:56 pm

  15. I had speculated MJM was holding off due to keeping State health insurance coverage. Wasn’t thinking straight on that. Since the date today is the 18th, he’s “worked” a couple of days in the second half of the month, so his coverage should be to the end of the month. Retiree insurance should take over the first of next month.

About all I can say is he apparently made up his mind on what / how he wanted to handle all this.

Comment by RNUG Thursday, Feb 18, 21 @ 5:57 pm

  16. I think Been There nailed it. I forgot about the remap.

Durkin should apply. Closest he’ll get to being Speaker.

Comment by Third Reading Thursday, Feb 18, 21 @ 7:07 pm

  18. “Anyone interested in seeking to serve as state representative”

Will he pull one more “Madigan gonna Madigan” for the road and recruit a few loyal Latino candidates to divide the vote? (snark)

Comment by NIU Grad Thursday, Feb 18, 21 @ 7:27 pm

  19. His long self-congratulatory farewell letter from earlier today when compared to this short, terse follow-up is—strange.

Comment by Responsa Thursday, Feb 18, 21 @ 8:37 pm

  20. How much power does Madigan still hold as chair of the IL Democratic Party?

Comment by Mr. Black Thursday, Feb 18, 21 @ 10:12 pm

  21. Newman called for a transparent replacement process, she’s the boss now B) honestly I think special elections should be the norm the appointment process is awful.

    Comment by Lindenhurst 127 Thursday, Feb 18, 21 @ 10:27 pm

  22. Marie Newman won’t survive a primary. Her district becomes a large Latino district in next map. Easiest place for Latino caucus to grab a seat, without upsetting the other caucuses. With the size of Illinois Latino community and only having one Latino representative that won’t fly.

Comment by Frank talks Thursday, Feb 18, 21 @ 11:36 pm

  23. Chuy would not in any way go against Newman they’re very ideologically similar, I think it will be interesting to see what happens with IL03 especially now but Marie is my favor member of congress currently no doubt

Comment by Anonymous Friday, Feb 19, 21 @ 7:01 am

  24. “People actually like Shirley.”

True. Lisa Madigan would introduce her mother Shirley as “the most popular Madigan.”

    Comment by Anon E Moose Friday, Feb 19, 21 @ 7:49 am

  25. So Madigan can’t appoint who he wants to be his successor. Yet some assume he will be pulling the strings behind the scenes?

Newman’s statement is odd as well. Whoever the replacement is will be a backbencher at the bottom of the seniority list. Nothing to get worked up over.

Comment by Strange days Friday, Feb 19, 21 @ 10:57 am

  26. I wonder if Mike Simmons can get himself appointed to this seat too.
