Question of the Day

Posted in:

[From Rich Miller: This is Kevin’s first QOTD, and I think it’s a good one.]

There has been a lot of controversy lately over Hillary Clinton changing her campaign song.

If Rod Blagojevich runs for reelection, what should his campaign song be?

Have fun.

  27. THE SIDESTEP
From : “The Best Little Whorehouse In Texas”
    (Carol Hall)
    Charles Durning - Govenor

Fellow Texans, I am proudly standing here to humbly see.
I assure you, and I mean it- Now, who says I don’t speak out as plain as day?
And, fellow Texans, I’m for progress and the flag- long may it fly.
I’m a poor boy, come to greatness. So, it follows that I cannot tell a lie.

Ooh I love to dance a little sidestep, now they see me now they don’t-
I’ve come and gone and, ooh I love to sweep around the wide step,
cut a little swathe and lead the people on.

Now my good friends, it behooves me to be solemn and declare,
I’m for goodness and for profit and for living clean and saying daily prayer.
And now, my good friends, you can sleep nights, I’ll continue to stand tall.
You can trust me, for I promise, I shall keep a watchful eye upon ya’ll…

Ooh I love to dance a little sidestep, now they see me now they don’t-
I’ve come and gone and, ooh I love to sweep around the wide step,
cut a little swathe and lead the people on.

Now, Miss Mona, I don’t know her, though I’ve heard the name, oh yes.
But, of course I’ve no close contact, so what she is doing I can only guess.
And now, Miss Mona, she’s a blemish on the face of that good town.
I am taking certain steps here, someone somewhere’s gonna have to close her down.

Ooh I love to dance a little sidestep, now they see me now they don’t-
I’ve come and gone and, ooh I love to sweep around the wide step,
cut a little swathe and lead the people on.

Ooh I love to dance a little sidestep…

And, ooh I love to sweep around the wide step…

Cut a little swathe and lead the people on.

    There may be trouble ahead
But while there’s moonlight and music and love and romance
Let’s face the music and dance

    Before the fiddlers have fled
Before they ask us to pay the bill, and while we still have the chance
Let’s face the music and dance

Soon, we’ll be without the moon
    Humming a different tune - and then . . .

There may be teardrops to shed
But while there’s moonlight and music and love and romance
Let’s face the music and dance, dance

    Welcome my son
    Welcome to the machine
    Where have you been?
It’s alright we know where you’ve been.

    You’ve been in the pipeline
    Filling in time
Provided with toys and scouting for boys
You brought a guitar to punish your ma

    And you didn’t like school
And you know you’re nobody’s fool
    So welcome to the machine

    Welcome my son
    Welcome to the machine
    What did you dream?
It’s alright we told you what to dream

You dreamed of a big star
    He played a mean guitar
He always ate in the Steak Bar
He loved to drive in his Jaguar
    So welcome to the machine

  53. Sorry that this is long, but the whole song tells a great deal of the Blago experience.

    “Hollow Man” by Mark Erelli

They picked another one off the vine
Scooped out the seeds in the back of his mind
Filled up his head with half-truths and lies
And put the finishing touch on the perfect disguise

They rolled out a carpet and threw a parade
Convinced everyone he had something to say
They smiled as they watched from the two-way mirror
As he told all the people what they wanted to hear

    (Chorus)
Hey, have you heard the story?
It’s the same old song, same old dance
    Hey, he’s bound for glory
He ain’t nothing but a hollow man

He basked in the glow of the fortune and fame
Even threw the first pitch at the World Series game
He always maintained he had nothing to hide
No one ever suspected he was empty inside

    (Chorus)
Hey, he don’t know what he’s doing
They set him up so high, he never had a chance
Hey, you can see right through him
He ain’t nothing but a hollow man

Then came the day his cover was blown
Their little Frankenstein monster got out of control
So he looked to the ones who had saved him before
Only to find that they’d changed all the locks on the doors

The press circled in with blood in their eyes
Each one wanting a piece of his shallow disguise
And they cast him aside when from glory he fell
Now he’s just another bum with a story to tell

    (Chorus)
    Hey, he’s less than zero
The greater the height, the harder you land
Ain’t it hard when you find your hero
Ain’t nothing but a hollow man

‘Cause the banners, they all flown in the last war

“Between the iron gates of fate,
The seeds of time were sown,
And watered by the deeds of those
    Who know and who are known;
    Knowledge is a deadly friend
When no one sets the rules.
The fate of all mankind I see
Is in the hands of fools.

    Confusion will be my epitaph.
As I crawl a cracked and broken path
If we make it we can all sit back
    And laugh.
But I fear tomorrow I’ll be crying,
Yes I fear tomorrow I’ll be crying.”

  80. From the musical “Chicago” the song “Razzle Dazzle”

Give ‘em the old razzle dazzle
    Razzle Dazzle ‘em
Give ‘em an act with lots of flash in it
And the reaction will be passionate
Give ‘em the old hocus pocus
    Bead and feather ‘em
How can they see with sequins in their eyes?

What if your hinges all are rusting?
What if, in fact, you’re just disgusting?

    Razzle dazzle ‘em
    And they’ll never catch wise!

Give ‘em the old Razzle Dazzle

    Razzle dazzle ‘em
Give ‘em a show that’s so splendiferous

Row after row will crow vociferous

Give ‘em the old flim flam flummox
    Fool and fracture ‘em

How can they hear the truth above the roar?

Throw ‘em a fake and a finagle
    They’ll never know you’re just a bagel,

    Razzle dazzle ‘em
And they’ll beg you for more!

Give ‘em the old double whammy
    Daze and dizzy ‘em
Back since the days of old Methuselah
    Everyone loves the big bambooz-a-ler

Give ‘em the old three ring circus
    Stun and stagger ‘em
When you’re in trouble, go into your dance

Though you are stiffer than a girder
They’ll let you get away with murder
    Razzle dazzle ‘em
    And you’ve got a romance

    Give ‘em the old
    Razzle Dazzle

Give ‘em the old Razzle Dazzle
    Razzle dazzle ‘em
Show ‘em the first rate sorceror you are
Long as you keep ‘em way off balance
How can they spot you’ve got no talent
    Razzle Dazzle ‘em

    Razzle Dazzle ‘em
    Razzle Dazzle ‘em

And they’ll make you a star!

  82. Let’s try something contemporary, from the film “Once”

    Lies - Glen Hansard -

I think it’s time, we give it up
And figure out what’s stopping us
From breathing easy, and talking straight
The way is clear if you’re ready now
    The volunteer is slowing down
And taking time to save himself

    The little cracks they escalated
And before you know it is too late
For making circles and telling lies

You’re moving too fast for me
And I can’t keep up with you
Maybe if you slowed down for me
I could see you’re only telling
    Lies, lies, lies
    Breaking us down with your
    Lies, lies, lies
    When will you learn

    The little cracks they escalated
And before you know it is too late
For making circles and telling lies

You’re moving too fast for me
And I can’t keep up with you
Maybe if you’d slowed down for me
I could see you’re only telling
    Lies, lies, lies
    Breaking us down with your
    Lies, lies, lies
    When will you learn

So plant the thought and watch it grow
Wind it up and let it go

  87. “How Could You Believe Me”

Words & Music by Alan Jay Lerner & Burton Lane

How could you believe me when I said “I Love You”
When you know I’ve been a liar all my life?
I’ve had that reputation since I was a youth –
You must have been insane to think I’d ever tell the truth.

How could you believe me when I said “I Love You”
When you know I’ve been a liar, a good for nothing liar,
All my good for noth - in’ life?

  88. Stuck in the Middle With You

Well I don’t know why I came here tonight,
I got the feeling that something ain’t right,
I’m so scared in case I fall off my chair,
And I’m wondering how I’ll get down the stairs,
Clowns to the left of me,
Jokers to the right, here I am,
Stuck in the middle with you.

Yes I’m stuck in the middle with you,
And I’m wondering what it is I should do,
It’s so hard to keep this smile from my face,
Losing control, yeah, I’m all over the place,
Clowns to the left of me, Jokers to the right,
Here I am, stuck in the middle with you.

Well you started out with nothing,
And you’re proud that you’re a self made man,
And your friends, they all come crawlin,
Slap you on the back and say,
    Please…. Please…..

Trying to make some sense of it all,
But I can see that it makes no sense at all,
Is it cool to go to sleep on the floor,
‘Cause I don’t think that I can take anymore
Clowns to the left of me, Jokers to the right,
Here I am, stuck in the middle with you.

Well you started out with nothing,
And you’re proud that you’re a self made man,
And your friends, they all come crawlin,
Slap you on the back and say,
    Please…. Please…..

Well I don’t know why I came here tonight,
I got the feeling that something ain’t right,
I’m so scared in case I fall off my chair,
And I’m wondering how I’ll get down the stairs,
Clowns to the left of me,
Jokers to the right, here I am,
Stuck in the middle with you,
Yes I’m stuck in the middle with you,
Stuck in the middle with you.

  90. For his self-absorption, “Mirror in the Bathroom” by English Beat or the cover by Madness:
    “Mirror in the bathroom
    please talk free
    The door is locked
    just you and me.
Can I take you to a restaurant
    that’s got glass tables
    You can watch yourself
    while you are eating.
    Mirror in the bathroom
    I just can’t stop it,
    Every Saturday you see me
    window shopping.
    Find no interest in the
    racks and shelves
    Just a thousand reflections
of my own sweet self, self, self…
    Mirror in the bathroom
You’re my mirror in the bathroom
You’re my mirror in the bathroom
You’re my mirror in the bathroom…
    Mirror in the bathroom
    recompense
    For all my crimes
    of self defense.
    Cures you whisper
    make no sense
    Drift gently into
    mental illness.
    Mirror in the bathroom
    please talk free
    The door is locked
    just you and me.
Can I take you to a restaurant
    that’s got glass tables
    You can watch yourself
    while you are eating.
    Mirror in the bathroom
    Mirror in the bathroom…”

BTW, speaking mof crazy people, “They’re coming to take me away”, attributed to Napoleon the 14th, is actually sung by Norman Greenbaum, of “Spirit In The Sky” fame. One and the same.

Suggestion for another future QOTD: what would be their choice of video game for Blago and each of the constitutionalss to play? I think Madigan would be all over Civ IV, Emil seems like a Halo 3 guy, (”I’m a WARRIOR!!!) but Rod would play The Sims (Sim Government?) or Leisure Suit Larry.

And his skills at diplomacy and statesmanship can be summed up in two famous words: “Leeeeeroy Jenkins!!!!!!!”.

(unlike the Governor, I had to look these lyrics up)

    “Sometimes I work a scheme
But then it flips on me
Dosen’t turn out how I planned
    gets stuck in quick sand
    No problem, can be solved
    Once I get involved
    I try to be delicate
    Then crash right into it
    But my intentions are good{yeah yeah yeah}
    Sometimes just mis-understood”

  94. If I Only Had …… a Brain

I could while away the hours
    Conferrin’ with the flowers
    Consultin’ with the rain
And my head, I’d be scratchin’
While my thoughts were busy hatchin’
If I only had a brain.

    I’d unravel ev’ry riddle
    For any individ’le
    In trouble or in pain
With the thoughts you’d be thinkin’
    You could be another Lincoln,
If you only had a brain.
Oh, I could tell you why
    The ocean’s near the shore,
I could think of things I never thunk before
And then I’d sit and think some more.
I would not be just a nuffin’
My head all full of stuffin’
My heart all full of pain.
I would dance and be merry
    Life would be a ding-a-derry
    If I only had a brain–Whoa!

  100. I’m A Loser ~ Lennon/McCartney

    I’m a loser
    I’m a loser
And I’m not what I appear to be

Of all the love I have won or have lost
there is one love I should never have crossed
She was a girl in a million, my friend
I should have known she would win in the end

    I’m a loser
And I lost someone who’s near to me
    I’m a loser
And I’m not what I appear to be

Although I laugh and I act like a clown
Beneath this mask I am wearing a frown
My tears are falling like rain from the sky
Is it for her or myself that I cry

    I’m a loser
And I lost someone who’s near to me
    I’m a loser
And I’m not what I appear to be

What have I done to deserve such a fate
I realize I have left it too late
And so it’s true, pride comes before a fall
I’m telling you so that you won’t lose all

    I’m a loser
And I lost someone who’s near to me
    I’m a loser
And I’m not what I appear to be

  102. S.I.N. - Ozzy Osbourne, Zakk Wylde, Randy Castillo

A psycho driver twisted in my head
Silence broken, but there’s nothing said
    I got a nightmare from a fantasy
Will the voices ever set me free
    I can hear’em, I can hear’em
Someone wake me when it’s over
    I can see’em, I can see’em
I can see’em over and over again
I saw it happening like deja-vu
They tried to tell me, but they couldn’t get through
In my head I hear the voices scream
I need someone to tell me what it means

Whoa - Who turned off the lights ?
Whoa - A shadow in the night
Whoa - It wasn’t meant to be
    I can’t tak this alone
Don’t leave me on my own tonight
Oh no I can’t take it alone
Don’t leave me on my own tonight
Shattered dreams lay next to broken glass
I wonder if tonight will be my last
I need an angel who can rescue me
To save me from my mental symphony

Whoa - Who turned off the lights ?
Whoa - A shadow in the night
Whoa - It wasn’t meant to be
    I can’t take this alone
Don’t leave me on my own tonight
No, no I can’t take it alone
Don’t leave me on my own tonight
