Schadenfreude so thick you could cut it with a knife

Posted in:

* Mary Miller got elected to Congress and immediately began gulping Potomac water by the gallon. She rarely talks about her district. To her, it’s all about the Hollywood stuff. And her Illinois colleagues aren’t exactly feeling sorry for her remap predicament of being mapped in with Mike Bost but right next door to Rodney Davis

“I do not feel sorry for Mary Miller,” said Rep. Robin Kelly (D-Ill.), who represents Chicago and also chairs the state Democratic Party.

“I think Mike Bost is a decent human being. I think Rodney Davis is a decent human being. And I don’t recall them ever speaking lovingly of Adolf Hitler,” said Rep. Cheri Bustos (D-Ill.). […]

Bost said he called Miller a month ago, before he announced his campaign. “I asked her to get back with me. She had never got back to me,” he said in a brief interview Thursday on the Capitol steps, where Miller passed by her potential opponent soon after, on her way inside to vote. […]

Throughout her first term, Miller has formed alliances with members of the ultra-conservative House Freedom Caucus, at times putting herself at odds with the House GOP conference. […]

“If she chooses to run against Bost, he’s going to beat her. If she chooses to run against Davis, Davis is going to beat her,” [Bustos[ said. “Literally, whatever she picks, she’s going to lose.”

* Recent case in point: Eighty House Republicans voted with Democrats last week to pass the Immunization Infrastructure Modernization Act. Miller voted against it and then told the far-right Breitbart publication why

Rep. Mary Miller (R-IL), who was one of the 130 Republicans to vote “no,” told Breitbart News exclusively on Wednesday that the legislation would enable the federal government to “track” unvaccinated Americans who “will be targeted and forced to comply with Biden’s crazy ‘global vaccination’ vision.”

“These systems are designed to allow for the sharing of crucial information and maintenance of records. Do we really trust the government to protect our medical records?” Miller said. “The bill’s author even bragged in her press release that these systems will help the government remind patients when they are due for a recommended vaccine and identify areas with low vaccination rates to ensure equitable distribution of vaccines. This was clearly a legislative tool to enforce vaccine mandates and force their Orwellian rules onto those who do not comply.” […]

Miller noted that the legislation paves the way for the government to give blue states millions in taxpayers funds to enforce vaccine mandates. According to the bill’s text, the government could award grants and cooperative agreements to health departments or other local governmental entities for agreeing to adopt the new data collection guidelines set by the CDC. Any agencies hoping to receive a grant must agree to comply with security standards to protect personal health information.

  3. First thing… it’s tough being not only a freshman, but a freshman during a remap.

Being un-liked by the delegation too… yeah… it’s not a great way to see long term seat situations. Rent, don’t buy.

    This is top shelf;

===“I think Mike Bost is a decent human being. I think Rodney Davis is a decent human being. And I don’t recall them ever speaking lovingly of Adolf Hitler,” said Rep. Cheri Bustos===

Miller ran and won because that freshman taking the seat after Shimkus was always going to be the one without a chair. Now throw in praising the leader of National Socialists… yeah, expect zero remap help.

It would be better for the country and Illinois with Mary Miller out of Congress. In that context to that result, me personally, I appreciate the map very much.

  4. I beg to differ with Ms. Bustos’s characterization of Mr. Davis and Mr. Bost.

  5. The lack of respect to Bost for his courtesy call is telling. She rails against socialism yet has no problem taking over $940K in federal farm subsidies. I would love to see her be Bailey’s Lt. Governor candidate so she can be the “Ambassador to the urban areas”. As someone that lives in her current district, I’m looking forward to having Bost and Davis do a better job of being present here and at least trying to represent Charleston and Mattoon.

  6. -So, MM & MN are under the bus together. Who would have thought…..-

Far different extremes on the political spectrum, but share the common trait of not working well with others. If we are ever going to recover from the terrible divide and rancor we are experiencing, we need to start with small steps like removing as many rigid ideologues as we can. Won’t miss either of these two.

  7. == MM and MN ==

I think we’ve been overlooking an important dynamic that will be in play during the June primaries next year: historically low turnout. Few are going to vote in a summer primary other than the most committed party activists — hardcore Trumpian conservatives will dominate the GOP primary and hard left progressives will do the same on the Dem side. Given that, can we completely discount Miller’s chances?

  8. Furtive Look - I agree… Ms. Bustos is too generous with that characterization. Bost joined Miller in voting against certifying results of the national election. He still does not stray too far from the koolaid.

  9. I live in Mary Miller’s district. Only item she has done for this area was walk in EIU’s homecoming parade. Hate to see that she is being tracked by Federal farm policy by accepting farm subsidies. Must be painful.

  10. A few things.

One, considering how often Miller and Bailey love to rail against socialism and how evil it is, has anyone ever audited their financials. Usually when a republican is this angry about something others are doing, it’s because they are doing something off book themselves.

Two, my county is redrawing the county board district boundaries as well. I’m sure it is just a coincidence that the organizer of the event in DC miller was speaking at, who is also a county board member, is having their district completely removed as part of a reduction in total board districts in the county.

  12. ==hardcore Trumpian conservatives will dominate the GOP primary==

She can’t out-Bost Mike Bost or even Davis. They all essentially have the same base, but here’s the difference: Bost and Davis outworked Miller and had county chair endorsements locked up. She’s more interested in press release politics than retail politics.

  13. I think Miller’s chances are slim either way, but slimmer against Bost on ideology and his tenure and reputation. Better ideological matchup versus Davis but he too is an entrenched, known quantity with regular party support. Also eyeballing the map seems to put the geography in his favor, as he has represented more of that area, and definitely longer. Her slice of that new district from her current one appears pretty sparsely populated.

    Well said.

When Bost and Davis secured all these endorsements, it isolated Miller in a way that any Trumpkin base she may claim, what base can Miller draw from in either district?

She gonna run right of Bost, out-Bost Bost… and overcome Bost’s district support?

She gonna try to, as an outsider in that dream district, talk about being more Trumpy than Davis with few, if any, party support… while still an outsider to her residence?

Of course Miller *could* win, but could… to will… that’s a big leap

  17. Does she even want to be reelected? She does like to hobknob with the nut-job luminaries. But has done little to nothing legislatively.

=This was clearly a legislative tool to enforce vaccine mandates and force their Orwellian rules onto those who do not comply.” […]

Odd thing to say for an election audit supporter.

  18. ===hardcore Trumpian conservatives will dominate the GOP primary===

Primary isn’t until June 28th. You cannot say that for sure. And Mike Bost is Trumpy as all get-out. Plus, he can get things done. She has no interest in work.

Ron Burgundy really nails this especially in regards to vaccines that are tracked by many, if not all, states as a matter of public health.

Also, getting to say Ron Burgundy really nails it is amusing me more than it should.

    Could be.

Or folks that generate turnout decide to take her out and Davis runs a better field op, while still not not turning his back on Trump.

It’s tough being a freshman too

If I was doing the maps I would have put them both in a new 3rd stretching from LaGrange to Charleston, but still mostly Chicago-area centric. Then throw in the People’s Republic of Urbana into this new district and let the fun begin.
