Too bad that the Illinois Supreme Court won’t license attorneys unless they have attended an American Bar Association approved school. ABA refuses to approve distance law education programs, despite their quality. So, in essence, we have one branch of Illinois government putting its faith into distance education and another saying that it can never be sufficient.
On a side note, the Illinois Supreme Court has no business deferring to the ABA. The ABA is a private association of attorneys, who’s purpose is to serve the best interests of laywers–not the public at large. I can think of few things that would serve the interests of current laywers better than limiting the number of approved law schools, and therefore attorneys, driving up the cost of legal advice, and preventing many people from enjoying equal protection under the law.
