DeVore, 53, a small-town attorney who has the words “liberty” and “freedom” tattooed on his forearms, received his law degree from Saint Louis University and was admitted to the Illinois bar in 2011.

* The Question: Do you have any tattoos? Explain either way.

I remain ink free. I’m close to Rich in age (younger though, heh), but most people younger than me seem to have them. Most people I know who are my age do not. Anecdotal, but that’s been my experience.

I never even considered a tattoo. Not for any actual reason, but getting one never crossed my mind, even as more and more friends and people I know get them. Just not my thing.

The best tattoos, in my opinion, are ones that can be covered discretely. I know that’s my inner old man talking, but unless you have horrible scars, I see no reason to share your body art with the world.

And don’t get me started on body piercing…

No. Not opposed to getting one, just do not feel strongly enough about something (heritage, city I live in etc) to pull the trigger

Took me 39 years to get my undergrad degree. That’s 39 years after I started. But I got it. No tattoos. Personal choice. Told my kids if they want to get one they could. Also told them if they have money to spend on tattoos, they must no longer need any of mine.

I have two. Both inked over 30 years ago when the tattoo thing first started to become mainstream. Both concealed when dressed business casual.

If he is 53 now, he was 42 when he was admitted. Still, yes, that is pretty old to start practicing law.

I dont have a tattoo but if i ever get one it will say “DeVore” on the thing I sit on..

So apparently he’s not just a terrible attorney, he’s also a terrible lobbyist.

I do not have any tattoos. I always worry what they’ll look like if/when the elderly wrinkles start to appear in greater volume. Wouldn’t want a giant freedom loving eagle that slowly turns into a withered, turkey looking thing.

I have five tattoos that I got over the course of 10 years.

Unfortunately both forearms are accounted for so I’ll have to find somewhere else to get tattoos that prove I’m not sheeople. /s

I also can’t help but image that Devore has never been in a court room without his sleeves rolled up.

Yes, I have several, but I would imagine I am slightly younger than the average CapFax commenter. Fully anecdotally but at least among my younger friends, it’s more common to have at least one tattoo than to not. All of mine are able to be covered in an office environment, but I’m also finding that it’s more and more common for tattoos to be accepted in professional settings.

Yep. Kind of went through a midlife crisis years ago and bought a motorcycle and got a tattoo. Both were big mistakes.

It’s not inner any more (mine isn’t either)

I’m not into pain and I just don’t have anything I want permanently on me. Had a step sister and step-cousin if that’s a thing who were very talented tattoo artists though.

Got four currently, planning on a few more. Just got the last one three weeks ago in downtown Springfield. Dude named Sam Myers at Good Heart Tattoo, he did a fantastic job considering I didn’t really have a picture for him to work from - just told him what I wanted, he came up with exactly what I wanted. No messing around, either, guy got me right in the chair and finished faster than I thought he would. I’d recommend him to anyone that wants one

No tattoos. However, I was really taken by John Fetterman’s rationale for his. According to a 2021/03/21 article in the Philly Voice, one tattoo is the zip code of Braddock where he was mayor. The others are the dates of people killed in Braddock by violence while he was mayor.
Another great tattoo was a cornstalk in full color on the leg of a local Illinois Dairy Queen owner. (If he had soybeans on the leg, he’d have had the top Illinois agricultural crops represented.)

I don’t feel I’m cool enough to pull it off. And honestly I don’t know what I would get. I have noticed that what I really like in the present is something I won’t be all that interested in in 5-10 years.

I don’t have a tattoo. I’m in the same demo as 47th (though no longer the same ward) and for the longest time, I was very personally opposed to getting one because of the permanence and potential wrinkling.

My wife got her third or fourth about 10 years ago and it’s a banger. I love it and it made me want one. But to this day, I cannot decide what, if anything, I want on my body *forever*

One tattoo on my forearm, “together ALWAYS”.

Five years ago my wife of 40 years suffered a stroke and couldn’t speak, but she had her intellect. One morning when I visited, she had written “together ALWAYS” on a pad of paper during the night. I saved it. Two weeks after I lost her, Tattoo.

No, mostly because I don’t know anything I feel strongly enough about to want permanently on my body. (Also body hair means limited places where one would look good, regardless)

No, I wouldn’t think of doing something like that. My father received one when he was in the Marines in WW 2. He regretted it the rest of his life and always preached to us how foolish he had been. That lesson stuck.

I was in a line of work while in the Army years ago where identifying marks like tattoos were disqualifying. That created a life-long bias against getting a tattoo. I have friends who are thoroughly inked top to bottom, but I couldn’t get one when young and foolish and am not interested now that I’m old and foolish.

No tatts. I have not found anyone who will do a tattoo like I want it. Everyone wants to make it “creative”. All I wanted was my parachute wings, nothing fancy but meaningful to me.

After my dog passed I have been looking thru photos of her trying to find the perfect one I would get. Any I would get would be hidden in business attire as I work with everyone from tradesman to CEO’s.

Probably about a decade ago, I was having a chat with the deacon after church. Her youngest daughter had just gotten a tattoo. Both the deacon and I did not understand the appeal, and we were in agreement that in about 30 years, the old folks home will not be a good looking place. How many 80 year old grannies are going to regret their tramp stamps?

Thank you for sharing in the story and sentiment behind my tattoo, “together ALWAYS”. The tattoo is all the more meaningful, because it is in her handwriting.
