Rate Sen. Duckworth’s first TV ad

Posted in:

* Press release…

U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) today released her first campaign ad for her re-election to the U.S. Senate this November. In the ad titled “Sacrificing,” Duckworth highlights her work in holding big corporations accountable for their price gouging that hurts working families. Earlier this year, Duckworth introduced her Gas Price Gouging Prevention Act, which would stop big oil companies from excessively price gouging in times of crisis.

In 2022 amid Vladimir Putin’s war of choice in Ukraine, Big Oil companies blamed soaring gas prices on the conflict, but netted record profits to line the pockets of CEOs and shareholders while working families felt the burden the most.

In contrast, Duckworth highlights her and her family’s military service and their sacrifice as a way of life. Her father was a Vietnam Veteran and her family has served in uniform during every period of conflict in our nation’s history, dating back to before the Revolution. Duckworth is an Iraq War Veteran and Purple Heart recipient who served in the Reserve Forces for 23 years before retiring at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in 2014.

  1. I rate it a B/C.

    It is nice enough, but not broad enough. The focus on gas prices is a single issue, and it is sort of a hit-or-miss issue, depending on where you live and how much money you make. Here in West Central Illinois, prices never dropped much below $4.00 a gallon, even when Springfield and elsewhere prices were hovering around $3.40 or so. Senator Duckworth should discuss a couple issues, to show better breadth of service as Senator.

  2. It’s a solid B

    Blocking and tackling. You win games with blocking and tackling.

    Who exactly is against a wounded combat veteran who wants to hold big business accountable?

    Blocking and tackling

    Kathy Salvi is a “boutique, niche” candidate, well-known in her conservative circles, recruited by desperate GOP stalwarts over a Bailey type that could’ve solidified a ticket already as heavy as a cinder block dropped in a pool.

    It’s a solid B

  3. F- it’s gross to use a service injury and compare it to inflation or price increases. Also there are already laws that address price gouging, so I doubt anything in her bill is to actually address the concocted “issue.” She would never have her seat if she wasn’t in a safe D state, so she doesn’t have to actually do anything helpful.

    Comment by Substandards Tuesday, Sep 27, 22 @ 9:49 am

  4. C+ I think. H-W basically hit it on the head, not sure that gas prices is the best single issue for her to drive on. But also she’s going to win so if there are DC-related reasons for her to go hard on oil and drug companies, she can spare the ad time.

  5. ==it’s gross to use a service injury and compare it to inflation or price increases==

    Easy for you to say, you probably still have both of your legs. She’s a hero that made a massive sacrifice for our country. If she wants to draw parallels, I say let her. She’s earned it.

  6. She forgot to defend her votes for the 6 trillion in spending that contributed significantly to the 40 year high in inflation that has caused the high prices for consumers

  7. ===in a safe D state===

    Duckworth beat Kirk, a Republican “whilst” Illinois had sitting Republican governor, and Republican comptroller too.

    I don’t think you grasp what Illinois is, or how awful the ILGOP as been, sans Rauner.

    Don’t be a victim, maybe ask yourself why the GOP can’t win statewide races.

  8. “I don’t think you grasp what Illinois is, or how awful the ILGOP as been, sans Rauner.”

    Even with Rauner. I mean, Illinois voters took out Quinn and still voted for a Dem veto proof majority in both houses. Quinn lost far more than Rauner won.

  9. ===voters===

    Labor turned on Quinn.

    Labor turned to Madigan.

  10. - Save Ferris -

    Look at the Duckworth ad.

    look at Salvi as the nominee.

    Is it the state or the candidate that keeps the seat, likely, Blue.

    It wasn’t that long ago, recently even, that McConnell complained about the candidates he had in races.

    Illinois, again, is an example of a greater problem, but “victims” wanna make it about a “Blue State”

    Candidates matter.

    This ad, to bring it back, only enhances why Duckworth likely leads in her race.

  11. ===She forgot to defend===

    Let Salvi make that case.

    Salvi’s lone ad looked like a Geico-like commercial with a phony take to the IRS.

  12. F - nice job on the diversity. Did you decide to have the meeting in Xenia?

  13. ===Did you decide to have the meeting in Xenia?===

    You can’t fault Duckworth trying to appeal to Bailey voters

    :)

    I kid.

  14. ==She forgot to defend her votes for the 6 trillion in spending==

    What’s to defend? People like government spending, and I can tell because none of your guys ever go out and tell the voters what, specifically, they would cut.

    You wanna go out there and tell people you don’t think they should’ve gotten that $3k stimulus money or the $50 from Pritzker, be my guest, JB and Tammy will gladly take their second terms.

  15. Forgot to weigh in earlier but now:
    -Diversity? Not a political necessity for an Asian-American woman who’s already known in blue areas
    -IRA? Those ads will follow, from Duckworth and/or others
    -Oil/gas issue? I thought it was odd at first but gas is still the measure for the economy for a lot of normal voters; taking the sting out of possible increases in gas prices; people hate price gouging; going after greedy oil companies is a good talking point for a potential presidential run. Just saying.

  17. Torco reply:
    If Asian, you need to appeal only to whites. Odd incorrect take, but ok.
    IRA comes later is irrelevant to rating this ad.
    Oil and gas issue is currently a democrat fallacy to most independents. I’d avoid highlighting the short falls of your party.

    After your additions, I change my ranking to F-

  19. Buy me a glass of wine, I’ll tell you my opinion of how the ones in office are blamed for anything involving the economy. Or you can ask Biden who repeatedly states that they need gas prices to come down before the election so they are not “trounced”. (his word, not mine). Or watch any Sunday morning political talk show where they repeat this ad nauseam. Or etc etc

    I already have an in-law uncle, thanks.

    ===that they need gas prices to come down before the election so they are not “trounced”===

    They’ve been going down. For weeks.

    ===watch any Sunday morning political talk show===

    The “talking heads” are the bane of honest discussions

    Be well.

    Yep.

  22. D

    6 Years in the Senate and this is what she’s highlighting? She doesn’t even cite what bill it is in the commercial.

    This is a missed layup.

  23. B+. Good ad, not a great ad, but she doesn’t need a great ad. She’s sticking with who she is and what works for her. And, it will work.

  24. What Chris B and Substandard said.
