There was easily enough gas to make a round trip, but, hey, I’m in Missouri, I might as well take advantage of this cheap gas I’m always hearing about. Looky here, gas for $3.98 a gallon. I’ll top off the tank and save a couple bucks.
Imagine my surprise when, later that night, we get back to Springfield and gas is selling for — $3.98 a gallon.

State Sen. John Millner, a Republican from Carol Stream, acknowledged Tuesday that the characterization of the NIU proton treatment center “could’ve been done differently.”
“I want both centers to be built,” Millner said. “I want to make sure both become very successful. And I’ll do what I can to promote both centers.”

I like this message, but not just for energy. I would listen carefully to a politician/businessman that had “Produce more, use less” as his mantra and actually believed/lived by it. Capitalism, you know.
Unfortunately, I don’t think there is a politician in Illinois that understands such things.

I see Durbin is kicking up his local tinkering/participation in local democratic races a notch. I am glad to see him assisting his fellow dems, but I wonder what impact this has one madigan.

Leory, your kidding right? Produce more use less is pretty much the polar opposite of basic economics under a capitalis society. For example, some of the most expensive milk in Illinois comes from Oberweis Dairy. Oberweiss the “business” man has not ramped up production at his daries to so flood the market with milk that the price drops substantialy. In fact Milk prices have gone up. Oberweiss the business man could increase his output so that supply of milk greatly increased lowering the cost of milk to say .25 a gallon. Oberweiss made up an overlysimplistic sound bite that would never work in any economy. If you want to discuss capitalism you need to start with supply and demand. Increasing supply while decreasing useage would result in a market surplus. The surplus would then drive many of the producers out of business as it would cost them more to produce this surplus energy then they were able to earn selling it. This would create a loss of production creating a huge loss in supply. The demand, even if reduced would become substantialy higher then the handful of suppliers who suirvived this campaign of overproduction could handle resulting in shortages and massively raising the cost. Overproduce and you drive production companies out of business raising costs. This is why we in the US are not a true capatilist society. We regulate certain industry to make sure the suppliers on the scene are limited or controlled to keep them from driving each other out of business and thus losing the service/production being provided.
Oberwesiss comment reflects a complete lack of understanding of basic economics. It is also of note that he does not himself practice this tactic of over production, making him a hypocrit as well.

Ghost - “Use less” as in “Use less in order to produce more”
Oberweiss’s business is niche. The business seems to be doing fine. I’ll listen to him when he talks about business because I think he has useful experience there. I know everyone here wants to burn him in effigy, but I’ll listen to someone who has practical experience.

This story about NIU building a cancer center hasn’t gotten much attention, but there are serious questions about why a university without a medical school or hospital wants to spend 160 million on this project while they are raising tuition every year. There’s a private hosptial that wants to use private money to do the same thing and NIU is using the always fair and non-biased Health Facilities Planning Board to stop competition. I can’t beleive that tax dollars are being used by NIU for lawyers and lobbyists to stop a cancer treatment center from being built in Illinois.

I voted for Jill Morganthaler in the Durbin poll. I was favorably impressed when I saw her speak recently. Given the national Democratic trend,a big Obama surge in Illinois, amd a demoralized Republican base, I think an upset of Peter Roskam is plausible.

Maybe Richardson can come early (or stay late) and use his mediation skills to the benefit of the Illinois Dem leadership! Sure, he’s dealt with some world leaders who are really “out there,” but this would be a real test of his skills.

Anita Alvarez is going to slaughter Tony Peraica - she’ll beat him so badly, that it will exile him to permanent political oblivion. Peraica won’t be able to make a plausible case that he should be the Republican nominee in 2010 for Cook County Board President after Alvarez makes him a two-time loser. A lot of Republicans, especially Republican women are going to vote for Alvarez, a refreshing new personality, with exemplary qualifications, on the local political scene.
Larry Suffredin is already campaigning for reelection by going out to the voters in his District, explaining his vote for the sales tax hike as a trade-off for the important reform of establishing an independent governing Board for the County Bureau of Health Services. At the seme time is is lambasting “Rod and Todd” vigorously. Suffredin’s argument that his vote for the sales tax increase was necessary (coupled with his adamant opposition to Todd Stroger) to avoid the kind of meltdown that occurring in State government is a sellable proposition.

What is NIU doing with a cancer treatment center–they don’t even have a medical school–sounds like a classic GOP earmark scam.
