  1. Agreed.

    Comment by 47th Ward Friday, Oct 3, 08 @ 1:40 am

  2. Is it still the Cubbies year? Sorry Rich, you didn’t say anything about Cardinal fans speaking of yesterday.

Comment by Give Me A Break Friday, Oct 3, 08 @ 5:51 am

  3. Speak of what?

Comment by Dan S a Die Hard Cubs Fan and a Voter Friday, Oct 3, 08 @ 6:10 am

  4. Rich, Most Cardinal fans were watching Palin avoid answering questions last night. Did the Cubs win or lose? Oops, now i see that they lost, sorry about that!

Comment by allcards Friday, Oct 3, 08 @ 6:28 am

  5. Agreed, Rich. And despite a few Baseball “Heaven” kool-aid drinkers carping I think it’s time we move on.

Comment by Vote Quimby! Friday, Oct 3, 08 @ 6:45 am

  6. Don’t give up hope yet Rich, funny things happen in October
(and sometimes some not so funny things).
    You gotta believe!
Interesting article that may give you hope….

  7. - Agreed
    With one caveat.
I idea of trying to selling Wrigley Field / Cubs put the jinx on the CUBS.
    Thank you Rod Blagojevich!

    Comment by 7th inning stretch Friday, Oct 3, 08 @ 7:43 am

  8. I disagree Rich. No one should ever forget that Flaming Pile of Garbage on display last night in Wrigley. For the Cubs fans, this is the karma train catching up for their collective sins, and the baseball gods are being truly savage in their retribution (we need not make a petty list, but needless to say there have been a number of real Stay Classy moments coming from the crowd this year). I understand the basic human desire to want to ignore the tragedy, the massacre, but the only way to heal is from confrontation.

As for the White Sox, Vazquez sucked, but that was hardly an unexpected occurrence with the way he’s pitched of late (fortunately that might be the only game he might get to start the rest of the playoffs). The Sox got to rest their bullpen after surviving their qualifying gauntlet, which was the biggest worry I had just in even considering being at this point (when thinking about the possible scenarios last weekend). I’m not about to get onto a ledge over losing 1 game. Unlike Cubs fans, we Sox fans aren’t rattled quite that easily, and while they were already seeing doom before the first game was even complete, I am fully cognizant that we have much more to play.

Once again, I cannot state it enough, Flaming Pile of Garbage.

    Comment by Baines 4 Prez Friday, Oct 3, 08 @ 7:44 am

  9. Amen to that, Rich.

And agreed with Baines. Why start Javier in the first game? Ugh.

With Buehrle, I can only assume the heavens will part, the called strikes will be plentiful, the RBIs will be multiply and we’ll beat the Devil Rays, or whatever they’re called these days.

I don’t know what will give the Cubs reason for hope, though …

Comment by Frost Friday, Oct 3, 08 @ 7:50 am

  10. B4P and others, I’m not giving up. And I know Sox fans aren’t giving up. We still have a shot.

Starting our worst pitcher yesterday puzzled me, but I figure Ozzie figured that the Rays would be hugely fired up for the team’s first ever playoff game, so victory was unlikely. Still, the bottom of the 7th was infuriating. Kicking dirt on the plate and calling out the pitcher? What the heck was that? Oy. I’d rather just forget yesterday.

    Go Sox.

Comment by Rich Miller Friday, Oct 3, 08 @ 7:51 am

  11. As a Cub fan all I can say is …..

    Wait till next year.

Comment by He Makes Ryan Look Like a Saint Friday, Oct 3, 08 @ 7:59 am

  12. Thanks for abolishing such a bad memory.

    Comment by Z Friday, Oct 3, 08 @ 7:59 am

  13. Well, Javy was the only one who was properly rested. If they would’ve started Buehrle on 3 days rest again, I think it would’ve been robbing Peter to pay Paul: either taking the gas out of his arm, or restricting his ability to pitch on 3 days rest again. If this goes to Game 5, Buehrle will do 3 days rest, I would bet.

    Comment by Baines 4 Prez Friday, Oct 3, 08 @ 8:01 am

  14. Rich,

I’m holding judgement until the Sox game is over tonight. If we get the win and head home tied up, then I believe yesterday’s events are free reign for criticism.

Also, I think Ozzie should have started Richard. Kid looked good in his last start against the Yankees, and Tampa doesn’t hit as well against lefties. But now we’ve got our three best starters left, so fortunately, today is a new day.

Comment by Juice Friday, Oct 3, 08 @ 8:01 am

  15. Meh if I was the manager I’m make that other team work for that win. Even if they were fired up!

That being said I won’t speak about it here.

Comment by Levois Friday, Oct 3, 08 @ 8:13 am

  16. I kind of feel like Kevin Bacon in Animal House this morning. I’m trying to believe that “all is well” while my hopes of seeing the Cubs play in the World Series are being trampled.

Comment by Bob Myers Friday, Oct 3, 08 @ 8:14 am

  17. The Cardinals still have as many postseason wins as the Cubs do this year.

That was a friggin’ bomb Manny hit to dead center last night.

Comment by Mark Twain Friday, Oct 3, 08 @ 8:19 am

  18. Proposed amendment:

Chicago baseball fans should agree to never, EVER speak of yesterday, or the day before, again.

  19. d-i-s-g-u-s-t-e-d!!

Comment by Loop Lady Friday, Oct 3, 08 @ 8:24 am

  20. You know what doesn’t help the Scrubs? When their fans boo them for striking out (e.g. Soriano in the 7th) No class whatsoever. I tell you one thing, that would never happen in St. Louis. The only player we’ve seriosuly booed has been Izzy and that was justifiably after his 17th blown save.

Comment by Pujols for MVP Friday, Oct 3, 08 @ 8:42 am

  21. I consider the Cubs as an educational tool.
Their history helped me teach my son to count to 100.
Now it looks like we’ll be able to keep using them as we move on to 101, 102, 103, 104 …

Comment by Michelle Flaherty Friday, Oct 3, 08 @ 8:56 am

  22. Why shouldn’t we talk about it? I didn’t think the debate was that bad for either candidate.

Comment by Been There Friday, Oct 3, 08 @ 8:56 am

  23. That was Thursday. This is Friday. When my medication wears off, I’m going to get out of bed and carpe diem. And 10 minutes after that, I’m going back to bed.

Comment by wordslinger Friday, Oct 3, 08 @ 8:59 am

  24. It is a lot less bad to be down one, on the road than to be down two after losing at home.

Comment by Wumpus Friday, Oct 3, 08 @ 9:07 am

  25. Rich, stay focused, Javy sucks and is no Big Game. plus a hot bat would help-but we got a stay focused-go get em Buerls…
    done, turned the page.

  27. I used to think the Cubs WERE cursed…now I think they just plain stink!!!

Comment by Deep South Friday, Oct 3, 08 @ 9:16 am

  28. WWBD (What Would Blago Do?) He said a 0-107 vote was a good thing, so let’s call a 3-10 score a victory! Problem solved.

Comment by What planet is he from again? Friday, Oct 3, 08 @ 9:17 am

  29. Pujols for MVP, I see the booing as progress. Cub fans have been too quick to cheer defeat and flubs in the past.

Comment by Rich Miller Friday, Oct 3, 08 @ 9:17 am

  30. Cub fans were looking to throw in the towel from the first pitch. There’s no curse, just a self-fulfilling prophecy.

The Sox paid the price for paying too many extra meaningful games at the end of the season. We had to abuse our pitching staff just to make the postseason and the price we paid was giving away a Vasquez game. The downside is that we pretty much had to give away a game in a five game series, that’s really tough, but the upside of what we went through in the last week is that we should be a lot more poised than the Cubs were in game 2 last night.

Buehrle is a contact pitcher, pitching in a roller rink to a speed and contact team. If we are going to get it done today we are going to need defense, maybe even moreso than hitting and pitching. That and Kazmir’s a strikeout pitcher so we have to get after him early in the count.

Comment by Scooby Friday, Oct 3, 08 @ 9:19 am

  31. Palin made less errors than the CUBS!

Comment by cardinals fan Friday, Oct 3, 08 @ 9:26 am

  32. The cubs laid an egg. That has to be the worse major league baseball game I have ever witnessed (anyway the first 7 innings since I went to bed after that). There is no other way to explain it than a huge choke job. I’m not giving up yet, but if they play like they did the first two games, they might as well not even catch the plane to LA.

As for the the White Sox, they just go beat by a better team. No shame in that.

Comment by Jaded Friday, Oct 3, 08 @ 9:32 am

  33. What can you expect? It’s the Cubs!! What that old saying? The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again epecting different results.

Comment by Ken Friday, Oct 3, 08 @ 9:35 am

  34. They’re calling us the Flubs after an embarassing Game Two.

Now it’s off to LA where we’ll make the Dodgers feel blue.

Comment by Ernie Banx Friday, Oct 3, 08 @ 9:39 am

  35. I think the Sox figured they almost had to “sacrifice” game 1 with another name I will never say again to give Buehrle another day of rest. If I knew Tampa was so bad (a .500 team) against lefties I would’ve started Clayton Richard. Oz is too loyal, sit Ken Griffey too, put Anderson in center. CF is not a position we need a big bat from, as if Griffey has a big bat, we need defense. Hate to show my age, but Ken Landis was a great CF and I think he hit about .240 for the Sox. I still have faith in the Sox.
Cubs, sad, but I need a Sox win before I can gloat.

Comment by James the Intolerant Friday, Oct 3, 08 @ 9:51 am

  36. Amen, Rich. AMEN! Its a wonderful day when Cubs and Sox fans can have a civil agreement and if anything yesterday provided the impetus.

Comment by Anonymous Friday, Oct 3, 08 @ 9:53 am

  37. ==booing as progress==

Exactly. Next step is to stop buying tickets, but that probably won’t happen…

Comment by Vote Quimby! Friday, Oct 3, 08 @ 9:59 am

  38. I was so hoping the Cubs would succeed — once the Cards wrapped things up — then the whining would stop.
    Wait til next year!

  39. The only hope I see is if Fitz indicts Blagoof today and during the booking process he is stripped of his right to be a Cubs fan.

Comment by Dan S. a Voter and Cubs Fan Friday, Oct 3, 08 @ 10:02 am

  40. Javy was muy repugnante, you can say thay quite surely.

Now it’s time to hitch the wagon to our faithful horse, Buehrle.

Comment by Anon Friday, Oct 3, 08 @ 10:33 am

  42. If we can pick up tonights game in Fla. we’ll be in good shape.

Comment by Bill Friday, Oct 3, 08 @ 11:27 am

  43. We all know the Cubs would spit in the eye of destiny if they every progressed past the first round. The divisional championship IS the World Series for the Cubs.

The Sox are now held to a higher standard, and they blew it. Rich, after silently enduring your relentless Cubs bashing for months on end (and while I really do wish BOTH of our teams the best), I can’t help but smile a bit right now. :D

  46. My White Sox got spanked. Cubs got spanked. And not the kind of spanking I like. Not a good day for Chicago. Like my mother ALWAYS says, AND THIS TOO SHALL PASS!
