Not so deep thoughts

Posted in:

* I can clearly remember a time when nobody ever asked me if I thought the governor was insane.

* If someone gave me a $150,000 clothing and accessories allowance, I’d buy Krugerrands and claim they were the latest cufflink fashion.

* Thank goodness there’s no refund law in Illinois.

* Planning a Christmas vacation around the US Attorney’s work schedule has turned out to be a daunting task.

* Is Michael just gonna run through every name in the world as possible appointees to Obama’s seat so she can say she had the scoop?

* Anybody wanna buy a newspaper chain? Cheap?

Your turn.

  5. In high school I was erroneously informed that Illinois was a representative republic where we elected people who would make informed decisions about our lives. How can members of the GA claim they are informed when they are blackmailed into voting for a multi thousand page budget that they were only given the night before they are required to vote on it? They are informed that if they don’t support it, they get no pork. Bad system!

Bill: Yes, dear. Do you have the stash?

Bernie: Yes. I have to remember everything in this household. Now let’s get going before one of those awful Rezkos take our seats.

  16. I can remember when…

    … Republicans were fiscal conservatives.

…Democrats needed public financing of campaigns to compete.

…the IL GOP owned the governor’s mansion.

…Republicans occasionally won countywide in Cook.

…there were six different Chicago mayors in a period of 13 years — and four them were not named Daley.

…banks were made of granite and marble and had big vaults with real money in them.

  19. Rod Blagojevich has won seven elections in a row in Illinois.

Comment by Truth Wednesday, Oct 22, 08 @ 4:09 pm

  20. If I spent 150K on clothes not only would I be a loopy as Rod I would also still look frumpy.

I never thought I would hear as US Attorney use the same buffet metaphor my dad used to use (don’t fill up on the stuff at the front, save room for the stuff at the end of the line).

Never thought the current gang in Springfield would be able to provide this much comic relief.

I suspect Jake will never get the credit he is due if Obama ends up president.

I find it hard to believe that the same state senate that produced Obama has some of the folks it does in it.

I think Sneed has a random senate replacement name generator, looking forward to seeing Anne Burke, Sugar Rothbord and Bill Curtis all being named as possible replacements. She cant go more than a month without mentioning a Burke.

  29. Sneed says (about appointing a successor to Obama), “But the subject is very touchy because no one wants to offend Barack,”

Blago certainly hasn’t let offending Barack get in the way of making dumb decisions. From threatening to call special sessions during election crunch time to saying Palin is qualified because she is a Governor to bringing up Obama every time someone mentions Rezco, our Governor doesn’t seem to care about offending the future Prez, so my deep thought is this.

Would our current Governor try to use the Senate selection as a bargaining chip to ease legal troubles?

  35. Jesse Jr. has earned some chits with Barack with his two very public smackdowns of his father — over the hot mike incident and Senior’s recent weird comments about Barack and Israel.

Comment by VanillaMan Wednesday, Oct 22, 08 @ 5:05 pm

  39. Wordslinger, I’ve recently thought the same thing. It must surely stick in his craw that some other African-American legislator from Chicago is on the cusp of the presidency.

I wonder if this will further ignite his desire to run against Daley for mayor in 2010.

Comment by The Doc Wednesday, Oct 22, 08 @ 5:08 pm

  40. Ambassador to Norway, lol.. or outer Mongolia

    Comment by Phineas J. Whoopee Wednesday, Oct 22, 08 @ 5:13 pm

  41. Doc, I think you missed my point. Jesse Jr. has whacked his father for goofy comments involving Barack. He’s earning points with Obama.

I think Junior’s got his eye on the Senate, not mayor.

As for Senior, Bill, I hope you’re not suggesting Ambassador to Norway is some kind of punishment or exile. Beautiful country, wonderful people, but I’m biased in a big way.

  42. The last judge I remember not getting retained was due to Mike Royko.

Comment by Anonish Wednesday, Oct 22, 08 @ 5:17 pm

  43. Who is Royko voting for - McCain or That One ??

    Comment by A Citizen Wednesday, Oct 22, 08 @ 5:18 pm

  44. Royko would have been for Obama. He would have had a riot with Palin and those would have been special columns. He would have praised McCain but would have said something like he would never elect someone as old as himself (they would be about the same age had he lived)to take on the toughest job in the world. What would he have said about our Gov…whew?

  45. I yearn for the quaint old days when the First Lady of Illinois lived in the Mansion and was seen arm in arm with visiting Girl Scouts, instead of putting the arm on brokers and realtors.

Comment by Levois Wednesday, Oct 22, 08 @ 5:56 pm

  49. I remember when you could trust the people running for office.

I remember when being a legislator, senator or president meant something other than a way to become a millionaine.

I remember when someone who owned a business that handled taxpayers money was scrupulously honest.

I remember when politicians didn’t wear Savile Row suits and Ferragamo shoes.

I remember when politicians at all levels showed up at the office for the majority of each year.

I remember when you could take a man’s word to the bank.

I remember when people lived within their means, paid their taxes, paid their own mortgages and didn’t try to be what they were not.

I remember when people used to be satisfied if they could pay their bills, have a home, friends and good kids.

I remember when the story of Diogenes taking his lamp in search of an honest man was less frequently quoted.

  51. I remember when Lisa Madagin was investigating Blago and at Fitz’s request stopped and turned over her info to the Feds. Fitz should indict in the next thirty days or Lisa M. should restart her investigations and take action. Justice delayed is justice denied, and I am not comfortable with Fitz’s delaying taking actions. It is way past time and Illinois is suffering.

    Comment by A Citizen Wednesday, Oct 22, 08 @ 6:34 pm

  52. Rod’s Reign has been the greatest “Rick Roll” this state ever voted for.

    He has:
    Given us up
    let us down
    Run around
    Hurt us
    told us lies
    made us cry

But every pop song eventually runs its course.

Come to think of it, their hair IS rather similar….

  53. I was wonder if he actually made someone cry but then I thought about that vid of the treatment center that was losing its funding.

Comment by Levois Wednesday, Oct 22, 08 @ 6:41 pm

  54. I remember when Illinois had at least 5 more electoral votes and they all lit up red on Election Night.

I remember (barely) when every scandal didn’t have a catchy name that ended in “-gate.”

Comment by Bookworm Wednesday, Oct 22, 08 @ 7:14 pm

  55. Judgement Day, I’m guessing the “turkey” in question has been well cooked, stuffed with campaign cash, and served with plenty of gravy and slices of the pie for contributors. To paraphrase another famously scandalous Illinois pol, “I smell Fitzmas dinner a-cookin!”

Comment by Bookworm Wednesday, Oct 22, 08 @ 7:31 pm

  56. == I remember when people lived within their means… ==

Good, then you probably also remember when people’s means went a lot farther than they do today.

I remember when Lura Ryan opened the Governor’s mansion every Halloween for kids to come and get free candy.

I remember when some of us thought having both the legislative and and executive branch would be a good thing. (Were we ever naive!)

I remember calling the toll free number (actually, it might have been a Springfield number) every day after school to find out what things went on at the 1970 Con-Con that day.

Now, I’m looking forward to someone live blogging the 2010 Con-Con.

Comment by Cheswick Wednesday, Oct 22, 08 @ 9:15 pm

  57. I remember when we could take the family out to the movies and everyone got popcorn, Cokes and candy.

Now we just go down to the governor’s mansion to watch the snow melt on the driveway with our faces pressed between the wrought iron fence for our entertainment. (Not really, but it sounds pathetic enough.)

Comment by Cheswick Wednesday, Oct 22, 08 @ 9:24 pm

  58. I remember when I could turn to any local station and cartoons would be on. On other stations it would be Donohue, The People’s Court or reruns from 20 years ago.

Comment by Levois Wednesday, Oct 22, 08 @ 10:20 pm

  59. If Palin has more executive experience than Obama, does that mean that she also has more than her running mate? Hmm!Maybe she should have run in the Repub Primary for President,

Comment by Fester Wednesday, Oct 22, 08 @ 11:01 pm

  60. - Fester -
Just vote for McCain/Palin and then be patient.

    Comment by A Citizen Wednesday, Oct 22, 08 @ 11:18 pm

  61. I remember when…

…I never had to wonder about what a sign in a foreign language at a Used Car Dealer’s on Route 12–saying “No License, No Problem!”–meant to the rest of us.

…I could look forward to someday getting some major dental work done with the extra $$ I’d have when I stopped paying for my kids’ health insurance (because they were now funding their own) v. worrying about being forced to pay the same $$ (maybe more) for someone else’s kids’ insurance–and wondering about exactly how many kids there were and whether they’d EVER grow up.

…”Diversity in the Workplace” meant being able to actually collaborate with brilliant minds from all over the world v. compensating for those with a “different” work ethic or “learning to tolerate” those with whom the majority in the office couldn’t communicate no matter how hard we tried.

…coming to the US meant you accepted the risk that your kids and grandkids might eventually lose the ability to speak your native language v. acquiring the “right” to DEMAND that the rest of the Country learn it so that you’d never have to speak English in the US during your lifetime.

I even remember when most people in this Country seemed to believe that we were Americans first and “Global Citizens” living in a “Global Village” second–and that we actually realized what would happen if the order changed.

Comment by Dan S. a Voter and Cubs Fan Thursday, Oct 23, 08 @ 7:38 am

  63. WGN used to be a such a great TV channel: good kids shows, great old movies, lots of summer baseball (when I still cared about that), pretty decent local news and weather.
