Are you being inundated with campaign mail/TV/radio ads? If yes, explain what you’re seeing and hearing and whether any of it is effective or even counter-productive.

I have no competitive races in my congressional or GA districts, so no mail. Nothing from Peraica or Alvarez.
The only candidates on TV or radio up north are Foster, Bean, Seals, Halvorson and Roskam. Not my districts. Foster’s and Bean’s spots are pretty good.
Durbin’s on, I don’t like him using the disabled soldier.
McCain and Obama are on, I assume that’s targeted to Indiana. Nothing great.

I thought Dan Duffy’s mailer on Bill Gentes’ blantant lie to the Daily Herald was pretty good.

Plus, the picture of Gentes kicking back in sunglasses is priceless.

I haven’t felt overwhelmed by any of it this time around, likely because we in the SW burbs are just seeing Obama TV ads because he’s trying to hit Indiana. A few of the Congressional ads have been on but nothing particularly memorable until this morning when I saw a DCCC sponsored ad slamming Marty Ozinga for ties to Blagojevich. That got my attention as I don’t recall even Ryan getting that treatment from the national GOP. I live in Judy Biggert’s district so things haven’t been too crazy.

Between having no competitive races in my area (I think Danny Davis is pretty safe) and not having cable, I have seen and heard next to nothing. The only ads I see are the ones posted here. I almost feel left out.

I live in the St. Louis market, and virtually EVERY television ad is from a campaign. Probably half of them are Obama, one in 10 are McCain, and the other 40% are Missouri races.
Mailwise it’s been very light—but then again I’m in Clayborne/Costello district so no competitors.

Surprisingly, yes, as my formal home is in downtown Chicago. I get residual advertisements and robocalls that are spillover from the onsalught in Northwest Indiana. Obama’s attempt to paint Northwest Indiana as “part of the Chicagoland area” is offensive and should insense Indiana residents.

Barack’s “Here’s what John McCain says about his health plan . . ” is on WXRT-Chicago every 14 minutes. Not as harsh as most ads, but it still steps on my mellow.

I receive something in the mail from McCain every single day and often up to 5 different mailings from the campaign, the RNC, or some other similar group a day. Different styles, but all wanting money. I dont even open them anymore.

I catch an Obama ad now and then.
I’m getting a bunch of ads for switching the broadcast TV signals.
My current thinking is that the DVD player will work with the current television. And what I lose in broadcast programming won’t be much of a loss.

I hear/see quite a bit of Obama ads on MSNBC (why?) and WCPT-the Air America affiliate(again, why?)
Oddly, the VFW is starting to run spots for Mark Kirk on WCPT (and WKIF and its other FM affiliate channels). I find that odd because Kirk is a GOP member (though you won’t hear it anywhere in the spots).

Barack Obama is running against George Bush. John McCain is running against Washington. Melissa Bean and Dan Seals are running against George Bush and Washington. Springfield Republican candidates are running against Rod Blagojevich and Springfield. Springfield Democratic candidates are running against Rod Blagojevich. Lake County Republicans are running against Terry Link, Cook County and the City of Chicago. Lake County Democrats are running against “the Republican Machine” except for Rep. Washington, who is running against everybody and everything.
All incumbents of all parties are for “change” except of course, if change means voting them out. All challengers of all parties are for “change.”
The latest mailers are mostly nasty stuff.
On TV the most astounding ad is Halvorson going after Ozinga for his ties to Blagojevich followed by the Seals ad of the way out of district Peoria vet who thinks 9-11 was a U.S. Government conspiracy while spouting off against Mark Kirk.

If I wasn’t in the the St.Louis media market I’d hardly know it was a campaign year. There aren’t many signs or even bumber stickers in the Metro East.
Highland is strong GOP but the few signs here are just now popping up in the right-of-ways.

I got one from Larry Bomke which I didn’t open (planning to vote for him anyway) and a mailer for McCain. I can’t recall the last McCain commercial I saw which is not a surprise since he never contested Illinois anyway. I’ve lost count of the Obama TV ads.
Can’t say that I pay any attention to them at all; they all seem to be nothing but talking points and promises that aren’t going to be delivered on anyway.

Zero direct mail in Evanston, except for the Northwest section, where Coulson and Biss are squaring off.

I’ve only received a handful of Bean mailers in the 8th. Nothing from Greenberg. I only watch television from the DVR and when the radio goes to commercial, I reflexively surf or listen to a track off of whatever CD I have in.

Probably the same reason Coke advertises: to remind you to buy Coke. Most people already know if they like Coke or Pepsi, but both still like to remind people.
At this point, support has crystallized and turning out the vote is key. Also, MSNBC certainly has some more liberal commentators, but painting them with a broad brush as a liberal station is overlooking Scarborough, Buchanan, and others.

I get mailers saying
Scott is saying Froehlich is best friends with the Flanders’ (ROd and Todd), voted for the tax increase and now is trying to repeal it.
Froehlich is saying that Forte Scott hates and abuses children and does not pay taxes, but owns 2 Jaguars.
It is making me not want to vote for either. Roskam mailers and some Morganthaller.

I receive hardly anything by mail. My choice is to not watch a darned thing politically related on TV. That pretty much leaves me the Speed Channel, A&E, NatGeo, History, and PBS. I can’t wait until all of this is over and we get a break for at least a month or so, until it all begins again with State constitutional races.

The traditional media attack has been rather light, even from Foster/Oberweis here in the 14th. I get email, though, from every candidate and partisan group approximately every 3 minutes. Maybe they are all trying to save printing costs and trees.

The campaign stuff has become so over the top Ihave begun to tune it out.
You could spend an infinte amount of money and I would not get the message

Not much activity. Local races have no serious competition. Robo calls are an immediate hangup. Anything coming in the mail is simply piched without reading and is pretty light these days. TV ads = ignore or do something different. Radio ads = change stations.
