* 3:50 pm - [Surprises are highlighted.] Chicago Alderman Bob Fioretti has filed petitions to run for the 7th Congressional District seat now held by Danny Davis, who may run for county board president.
* Attorney Clint Krislov has filed as a Democrat to run for comptroller. Krislov dropped out of the 1996 US Senate race (which also featured Dick Durbin and Pat Quinn) after reported problems with his petitions.
* We have a new US Senate candidate. Corey Dabney, an African-American Democrat, is apparently waiting to file his petitions. His website is here. The site was purchased on October 8th - less than a month ago. That makes two black Democratic US Senate candidates, although only one, Cheryle Jackson, can be considered a top tier candidate. Ms. Jackson has not yet filed.
* State Sen. Tony Munoz has filed to run against Chicago Ald. Ricardo Munoz for Democratic State Central Committeeman.
* In non-surprise races, Dan Proft filed his petitions for governor, Dan Rutherford filed for state treasurer. Porter McNeil has filed for Rep. Michael Boland’s House seat. Boland has not yet filed for treasurer lieutenant governor, but there’s still time.

* 4:04 pm - Cheryle Jackson and Corey Dabney have now filed.
Democratic political operative Mark Doyle has filed for treasurer.
* 4:22 pm - Jim Ryan just filed for governor.
* 4:34 pm - You can watch the Cook County filings at this link. As of this writing, Todd Stroger has not yet filed for reelection.
Andy McKenna and his running mate Matt Murphy have filed.
* 4:54 pm - Once again, we have to wait while Cook County updates its site. The county clerk hasn’t updated since 4:19 pm. Sheesh.
* 5:00 pm - Rep. Boland has filed for LG. If you’re keeping track, seven Dems have filed for LG so far, and six Republicans have also filed. Still no updates from David Orr’s site.
* 5:03 pm - From Scott Cisek’s Twitter page…

* 5:06 pm - The Green Party will have a gubernatorial primary between 2006 contender Rich Whitney and late filer Richard Mayers of Chicago. However, Mayers also filed for 10th Congress.
* 5:09 pm - ABC7 claims that Todd Stroger filed his petitions last. But there’s no confirmation yet from the county clerk.
* 5:10 pm - I was finally able to get confirmation from the county clerk’s office that Stroger filed. It would be nice if they’d update their site.

How is cheryl jackson considered “top tier”? Her endorsements thus far?
She polls fair to poorly
She doesn’t have nearly as much money as Alexi G. or [positive] name recognition for that matter.
She hasn’t been invited to the White House to see Axelrod, that I am aware of.

WCW, she’s top tier because she starts with a base. African Americans account for 35-40% of the Democratic vote and she has a credible claim on much of that vote based on historical voting patterns. She also is the only woman in the race. Purely on demographics, she’s top tier.

Actually you can make that THREE African-American US Senate candidates. LeAlan Jones is running as a Green Party candidate. Considering how much coverage and media attention he got as a journalist, then I consider him competitive.

Orr is an incompetent, and has been a constant screwup throughout his 19 years in the Clerk’s office. That said, every incumbent Democratic Township Committeeman who has an opponent will have to answer for not speaking out against Orr at Democratic Party slating, after years of their griping about his ineptitude.

A short Krislov-related anecdote:
In 1996 I’m walking down Randolph street when someone says “Meet Dick Durbin, candidate for Senate”, so I get in a short line and move up to shake Durbin’s hand.
While I’m shaking his hand, I ask him “Why did you spend so much time and money kicking that other fellow off the ballot?” Durbin won’t look me in the eye and won’t answer the question. He’s still shaking my hand when one of his handlers grabs my arm and says “OK, move on”.
All I could remember is that the fellow’s name started with a K and he was a mostly self-financed candidate. It bugs me to this day that Durbin would not or could not give a registered voter a face-to-face answer as to why it’s a good thing to kick another candidate off the ballot.
It is an effective technique in getting elected (ask State Senator Obama) but it is inherently anti-democratic and gives a bad odor to the whole enterprise.
As a moderately-left-of-center Democrat I agree with Durbin on just about everything of importance. But I’ll never vote for the guy. He had his chance to speak to me as a human being and chickened out.

The petition process is intended to ensure that those who are on the ballot have taken the time to get a certain percentage of the electorate to agree that they should be on the ballot. I cannot imagine why the petitions should not be examined to make sure they are legitimate and challenged if they are not. If there is no opportunity to challenge, you could just have anyone who submits their name put on the ballot.
A better argument could be made regarding the number of signatures required. (way too high for indys and 3rd parties)

Mike Boland has wanted to throw his hat into so many rings the last few years that no one in his district ever knew what his intentions were from election to election. Word up here in RI County was that he wanted someone running for the representative job that he could control. Then word was he was running for rep again after all. You just never know with Boland!

Ditto that everyone I asked in Rock Island county never saw Boland circulating petitions for State Rep. Boland has said for months he wouldn’t run for re-election no matter what happened with the LG race.
Rich, what article did Boland’s two-petitions statement appear in? You’re not talking about the Dispatch-Argus that has a long hostility to him, are you? The two petitions rumor was spread right before the Madison County endorsement meeting. Well timed. The false charges impacted the race. Maybe you got used, Rich.

My understanding is that there has been no decision as to whether to back any candidate in that race. Dave Schroeder and Gwen Drake both are interesting candidates, and both would be a major improvement over Ken Dunkin. Of the two, Schroeder seems to be the one running the stronger race so far (he filed the first day with over 2000 signatures) so we will see how this shakes out.
