*** UPDATED x1 *** Your must-do assignment for today - Get Well Soon, Carlos Hernandez Gomez

Posted in:

My good friend Carlos Hernandez Gomez is back in the hospital. Carlos, a top-notch reporter for CLTV, has cancer.

I talked to Carlos last night and he was in a bad place. He had some sort of reaction to his recent treatment and I’d say it was making him miserable, but that word is used so often that it doesn’t even come close to how he sounded on the phone.

As I’ve told you before, Carlos is an avid reader of this blog, so let’s all chip in today and wish him well. He badly needs to be cheered up, so let’s please do our best.

Get well, buddy. I’ll see you tomorrow. Remember, more people love you than you’ll probably ever know. And we’re gonna prove it to you today.

Get to it, people. Thanks.

*** UPDATE *** From Carlos’ wife, Randi…

Your blog post and the comments amaze us. Thanks so much for your friendship. To see how many people are rooting for him certainly gives him strength in a weak hour.

He doesn’t feel much like talking, but it’s certainly drawn a smile and a thumbs-up!

Keep it coming, folks. You’re doing some good here today.

  5. Carlos — I had the pleasure of sharing libations with you on a few occasions at the Billy Goat and other fine watering holes with a mutual friend / press flack. You clearly embrace the best of journalism, not just those late night traditions, but the passion for truth and a skepticism borne out of a savvy understanding of politics and human nature.

I hope you bounce back — we need you to inspire the next generation. You’re in my prayers.

  11. I am very sorry to hear about this.

There are so many important issues to cover that we need you back on the job as soon as possible. Good reporters are critical if ciitzens are to make good decisions about their society. We need you to grit your teeth, get through these treatment hassles, and come back on the job.

Comment by Abdon Friday, Nov 6, 09 @ 10:09 am

  57. Calros Remember:

    YOU STILL HAVE HOPE

If you can look at the sunset and smile,
    then you still have hope.

If you can find beauty in the colors of a small flower,
    then you still have hope.

If you can find pleasure in the movement of a butterfly,
    then you still have hope.

If the smile of a child can still warm your heart,
    then you still have hope.

If you can see the good in other people,
    then you still have hope.

If the rain breaking on a roof top can still lull you to sleep,
    then you still have hope.

If the sight of a rainbow still makes you stop and stare in wonder,
    then you still have hope.

If the soft fur of a favored pet still feels pleasant under your fingertips,
    then you still have hope.

If you meet new people with a trace of excitement and optimism,
    then you still have hope.

If you give people the benefit of a doubt,
    then you still have hope.

If you still offer your hand in friendship to others that have touched your life,
    then you still have hope.

If receiving an unexpected card or letter still brings a pleasant surprise,
    then you still have hope.

If the suffering of others still fills your with pain and frustration,
    then you still have hope.

If you refuse to let a friendship die,
or accept that it must end,
    then you still have hope.

If you look forward to a time or place of quiet and reflection,
    then you still have hope.

If you still buy the ornaments,
put up the Christmas tree or cook the supper,
    then you still have hope.

If you can look to the past and smile,
    then you still have hope.

If, when faced with the bad,
    when told everything is futile,
you can still look up and end the conversation with the phrase…”yeah…BUT.,”
    then you still have hope.

Hope is such a marvelous thing.
It bends, it twists, it sometimes hides,
    but rarely does it break.
It sustains us when nothing else can.
It gives us reason to continue and courage to move ahead,
when we tell ourselves we’d rather give in.

Hope puts a smile on our face
    when the heart cannot manage.

Hope puts our feet on the path
when our eyes cannot see it.

    Hope moves us to act
when our souls are confused of the direction.

    Hope is a wonderful thing,
something to be cherished and nurtured,
and something that will refresh us in return.
And it can be found in each of us,
and it can bring light into the darkest of places.
    NEVER LOSE HOPE!

If you’ve got time to read Capitolfax, I was hoping you have time to help me out…I’m trying to get a grip on the American political psyche, and I just can’t decide where folks’ minds are these days:

“There’s no time like the present.” — Anonymous

“Tomorrow, tomorrow, I love you tomorrow.” — Little Orphan Annie

    Thanks,

  166. Miller: Over? Did you say “over”? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!

    Bill: Germans?

    VanillaMan: Forget it, he’s rolling.

Miller: And it ain’t over now. ‘Cause when the goin’ gets tough…

Miller: the tough get goin’! Who’s with me? Let’s go!
    [runs out, alone; then returns]

Miller: What the fudge happened to the CAPFAX Readers I used to know? Where’s the spirit? Where’s the guts, huh? This could be the greatest night of our lives, but you’re gonna let it be the worst. “Ooh, we’re afraid to go with you Miler, we might get in trouble.” Well just kiss my ass from now on! Not me! I’m not gonna take this.

Wordslinger: Miller’s right. Psychotic, but absolutely right. We gotta help him beat this thing. Now we could do it with conventional medicine, but then we would fight over whether it should come through a big government universal healthcare plan, or a private plan that could take time to geta approved through the insurance company and eventually cost millions of lives. No, I think we have to go all out. I think that this situation absolutely requires a really futile and stupid gesture be done on somebody’s part.

Quinn T. Sential: Since laughter is always the best medicine, I think the CAPFAX Chorus should assemble outside the hospital window tonight about to sing Feliz Navidad to Carlos; in 8 part dis-harmony; at 10:05 p.m., in time to make the evening news.

Carlos biggest challenge after that would be needing plastic surgery to get the simile off of his face!

Miller: We’re just the guys to do it.

    D-Day: Let’s do it.

    Miller: *Let’s do it*!

The ball is in your court now Rich, all you have to do is post the hospital name and address, and the CAPFAX Choir could assemble somewhere nearby at; about 6:30 for HAPPY HOUR, to lubricate their vocal chords.

My prayer is that this cancer goes the hell away - and that, if it doesn’t, you and Randi have a profound sense of the love and peace only God can provide. I’m also praying that you both continue to be surrounded by friends with bottomless “servant hearts.” Sure, I’m in Denver, but if the two of you need ANYTHING, don’t hesitate to let me know.

I also want to thank you, Carlos, for all of the time you have devoted to journalism advocacy. You have been a such a stalwart - one of those special journalists who does more to support the profession than what it takes to collect a paycheck. Your generous contributions to the Chicago Headline Club, to the National Association of Hispanic Journalists - bravo!

All best wishes for a speedy recovery!

  230. Carlos, you are one of our favorite BEZ reporters of all time…we challenge each other, in our family, to say your name the way you say it each time we hear your broadcasts…your reporting has been incredibly important in our lives and in the life of this community, and we want you back, healthy and curious, as soon as possible. You and your family are in our thoughts and we wish you well as you fight this battle.
