*** UPDATED x2 - GOP pulls down ad *** GOP tries to tag Madigan with “junk” label

Friday, Jun 30, 2017 - Posted by Rich Miller

* This is an online ad. From the ILGOP…

Mike Madigan may be about to take Illinois to a new low.

16 years without a balanced budget and 26 credit downgrades on his watch have destroyed our state.

But Mike Madigan doesn’t care. As long as his power is maintained and his special interests are flush with taxpayer cash, Madigan is content to turn Illinois into junk.

Today, the ILGOP is releasing ads calling out Madigan’s meltdown.

* The ad

*** UPDATE 1 ***  Pritzker campaign…

“We’re approaching a third fiscal year without a budget and our bond rating is about to go to junk, but Illinoisans can find Bruce Rauner sitting at his desk waiting for someone else to do his job,” said Pritzker campaign spokeswoman Jordan Abudayyeh. “Governor Junk has driven this state to the edge of a fiscal cliff and he is about to slam his foot on the gas.”

*** UPDATE 2 *** Text from a top Republican…

Hey - Think it is worth noting that the party has pulled down the digital ad they released last night following the floor action this morning

The House adopted a budgetary floor amendment today. Click here for more.

Rauner will be in the ballot, statewide.

“Pat Quinn failed” is the easy to use playbook.

    Rauner is at 58% disapproval.

It’s difficult to see a state re-electing a governor whom never got to sign a budget, due to ridiculous demands, embarrassing costumes, and this idea that “because… Madigan” can mute…

    “Bruce Rauner fails”

    This ad?

That’s easy. Rauner wants, 100%, junk bond status, no budget, and plans to enjoy the destruction and try to blame it on Madigan.

What a sad way to measure success… Governor.

  2. - ILGOV2018 - Friday, Jun 30, 17 @ 9:12 am:

The ILGOP/Rauner party has consistently beat the DEMS to the party. Seriously, maybe it is time for some new leadership to take over the party and have the current leaders in a consigliere role.

  3. - Christopher - Friday, Jun 30, 17 @ 9:12 am:

Let the record show that Rauner talks “cooperation” and “compromise” out of one side of his mouth, but the ILGOP (i.e., Rauner) says another thing. Governors own!

  4. - illinoised - Friday, Jun 30, 17 @ 9:14 am:

To quote Bob, “Everything is broken.” Sad.

  5. - Lynn S. - Friday, Jun 30, 17 @ 9:21 am:

In what world will this ad make things better?

If Mike Madigan suddenly decided to resign, and Rauner failed to get anything done with whomever replaced him, would the strategy switch to “because… (New leader)”, or would Rauner finally admit he’s a failed Governor?

  6. - Annonin' - Friday, Jun 30, 17 @ 9:23 am:

Wow Gov”Happy”Junk must have them wetting themselves…Now let’s start askin’ who owns High Yield Muni’s or such funds?

  7. - Alternative Logic - Friday, Jun 30, 17 @ 9:24 am:

Not a smart move as it only reinforces the “Junk” label. The trick is to moot the framing not reassign it.

Using your opponents “words” (or in this case the WSJ’s more catchy phrase Gov. Junk) to deflect/defend yourself is a bit of a rookie mistake.

All the voters hear is “junk, junk, junk” and no one votes to preserve their junk status.

  8. - Rocky Rosi - Friday, Jun 30, 17 @ 9:25 am:

Strong ad. At the end of the day the voters will place the blame on the old guard. In private everyone is telling me it’s poor Dem leadership that is failing the state.

  9. - illinoised - Friday, Jun 30, 17 @ 9:28 am:

    =everyone is telling me=

    Sure.

  10. - Mr. K. - Friday, Jun 30, 17 @ 9:29 am:

Even if it is Madigan’s fault — if he’s to blame for sending us off the tracks — Rauner was elected to *fix* it. Not break it. Not whimper and whine. Fix it.

His campaign promise was to fix the broken state. He hasn’t. And this, to me, is what it’s all about.

Rauner’s the Governor. He’s at the top. His mission is to fix the problems. His mission is to deal with Madigan and Cullerton — and fix things. That’s it. He’s failed.

  11. - A Jack - Friday, Jun 30, 17 @ 9:31 am:

Which is your preference: a junk bond rating or a tax increase? You can’t blame Madigan for a junk bond rating if at the same time you are criticizing him for a tax increase to avoid a junk bond rating. That kind of logic only exists in Daffy Duck cartoons.

  12. - Anon221 - Friday, Jun 30, 17 @ 9:31 am:

Here’s a counter ad idea. Run the Sanford and Son’s theme showing Rauner drivin’ his trash can van and label him Governor Junk Bond Dealer.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tl71DM84Wc4

  13. - RNUG - Friday, Jun 30, 17 @ 9:32 am:

    =everyone is telling me=

Running this BEFORE the end of the special session tells me 1 thing:

Rauner isn’t open to a budget deal that is anything less than 100% what he wants.

  14. - Oswego Willy - Friday, Jun 30, 17 @ 9:33 am:

===In private everyone is telling me===

    Is that you… Bruce?

  15. - Tollway Tommy - Friday, Jun 30, 17 @ 9:35 am:

    Strong ad. Owning the message.

  16. - Chicago J - Friday, Jun 30, 17 @ 9:36 am:

The last two years of destruction is TOTALLY Rauner’s fault- it’s ridiculous he runs these ads. Yes, perhaps budgets could have been different in the past, but the junk bond status and complete demise of social services is directly because of Rauner, not Madigan. I’m so upset with Rauner and am really considering leaving this state if we can’t get our s*$% together.

  17. - Oswego Willy - Friday, Jun 30, 17 @ 9:36 am:

===“We’re approaching a third fiscal year without a budget and our bond rating is about to go to junk, but Illinoisans can find Bruce Rauner sitting at his desk waiting for someone else to do his job,” said Pritzker campaign spokeswoman Jordan Abudayyeh. “Governor Junk has driven this state to the edge of a fiscal cliff and he is about to slam his foot on the gas.”===

    This.

This needs to be continued at such a level and at such a pitch that the reinforcing of “Governors own” is as reflexive, and no “less true” than “Pat Quinn failed”

It was short, it brought it back to Rauner, and the gas peddle is a great end to the thought.

    Well done.

  18. - Jocko - Friday, Jun 30, 17 @ 9:40 am:

==26 credit downgrades on his watch==

First it was Quinn’s fault, now Madigan. Cullerton should save Bruce the trouble and pre-emptively blame himself /s

  19. - Oswego Willy - Friday, Jun 30, 17 @ 9:42 am:

I do think what is comical…

    This ad isn’t moving Rauner’s positives. It’s hardening Rauner’s 35% favorable.

Rauner needs to move off his 58% disapproval.

    This won’t do it.

This is a siren to the base. This is a mere “Mr. Cabello Note” on Facebook

If anything, Rauner ignoring “Pat Quinn failed” here is comforting that Rauner’s Crew knows… “Bruce Rauner fails” is just so damaging.

  20. - Arsenal - Friday, Jun 30, 17 @ 9:44 am:

The Rauner/ILGOP message has been awfully reactive lately- being the second one to bring out the costumes, the second one to use the “junk” label…maybe the money can make people think they’re actually “first”, but you very rarely want to be the one *responding* to attacks.

  21. - Mokenavince - Friday, Jun 30, 17 @ 9:50 am:

Right now most people are disgusted with Rauner. He has been an awful Governor. We can vote him out. Madigan is truly despised, but he is a lock to get re-elected and we are frustrated. Pat Quinn looks great beside these two.

  22. - Mokenavince - Friday, Jun 30, 17 @ 9:52 am:

It’s a toss-up who is worse. We can change governors, Madigan will just keep getting re elected, and no one will stand up to him.

  23. - wordslinger - Friday, Jun 30, 17 @ 9:57 am:

Gov. Junk must have really stung, coming from the WSJ. All the whispering and titters at Wine Club…..

But is Gov. Impotent better? Sitting at his desk, hoping something gets done?

That mean old man won’t let me get anything done — that’s a re-election campaign theme? Four more years of impotence?

  24. - TinyDancer(FKASue) - Friday, Jun 30, 17 @ 9:57 am:

I know you are, but what am I?

  25. - walker - Friday, Jun 30, 17 @ 10:02 am:

They’re probably ready to go with two versions: “Junk Bond Madigan” if the budget fails, “Higher Tax Madigan” if it succeeds.

  26. - So tired of political hacks - Friday, Jun 30, 17 @ 10:05 am:

Terrible add it avoid the fact Madigan has made a budget with every other governor but Rauner!!!!

    Way to easy to defend

  27. - Lucky Pierre - Friday, Jun 30, 17 @ 10:05 am:

So because most people in the state despise Speaker Madigan and his policies, we should elect JB Prtitzker who will march in lock step with him?

  28. - Oswego Willy - Friday, Jun 30, 17 @ 10:06 am:

===They’re probably ready to go with two versions: “Junk Bond Madigan” if the budget fails, “Higher Tax Madigan” if it succeeds.===

This is top shelf. Completely agree.

Why won’t Raunerites sponsor the revenue bill or put 30 HRaunerite votes on it?

    #TaxHikeMike.

Rauner has to prove he’s about the governing.

    State gets “saved”? #TaxHikeMike

State goes to Junk? (Rauner’s preferred option) #MeltdownMadigan to offset “Gov Junk”

The Rauner Crew isn’t the sharpest, they’re just the only ones working the messaging.

  29. - Anonymous - Friday, Jun 30, 17 @ 10:07 am:

The WSJ created “Governor Junk” - not MJM.
Sorry, Gov, this jacket was solely for you. From one of your own. Wear it proud. You earned it.

  30. - Anonymous - Friday, Jun 30, 17 @ 10:08 am:

I blame Rauner for everything, $256B pension liability, $15B in unpaid bills, chronically unbalanced budget, Chicago pension crisis, Chicago crime epidemic, it’s all his fault. He was elected to fix it, and he failed.

  31. - Oswego Willy - Friday, Jun 30, 17 @ 10:08 am:

===because most people in the state despise Speaker Madigan and his policies, we should elect JB Prtitzker who will march in lock step with him?===

    Nah.

“Bruce Rauner fails” is enough reason.

  32. - So tired of political hacks - Friday, Jun 30, 17 @ 10:08 am:

    I’ll take U S State Governor for $1000 Alex

Who is the only Governor in Us history to receive a junk bond rating?

    Who is Mike Madigan?

    Alex” no im sorry
Bruce Rauner, who is Bruce Rauner

  33. - Chicago Cynic - Friday, Jun 30, 17 @ 10:14 am:

LP, so great that you got your Rauner talking points handy.

As to the ad? Cmon. Lame. Super-lame. Extremely lame. I know you are but what am I lame!

We didn’t give him the moniker, his biggest fan the WSJ gave him the moniker. Governor Junk works way way way better than Junk Madigan. That’s why we have @governorjunk and governorjunk.com. Imagine when someone really put those to use…

  34. - Christopher - Friday, Jun 30, 17 @ 10:14 am:

    Lucky Pierre:

    Fixed it for you…
“So because most people in the state despise Governor Rauner and his policies, we should elect JB Pritzker”

  35. - JS Mill - Friday, Jun 30, 17 @ 10:15 am:

= In private everyone is telling me it’s poor Dem leadership that is failing the state.=

Funny, that can’t be true because EVERYONE is telling ME it is failed GOP leadership.

Because, you know, everyone is talking to me about it./s

  36. - Jocko - Friday, Jun 30, 17 @ 10:22 am:

    Stoph @10:08a

That’s gold, Jerry! Not to mention the longest term without a budget. #PassengerGov

  37. - Shake - Friday, Jun 30, 17 @ 10:23 am:

There’s Only One Junk. That’s Rauner..

  38. - Lucky Pierre - Friday, Jun 30, 17 @ 10:29 am:

The Madigan Meltdown of 16 straight years without a balanced budget and no compromise with Senate Democrats for the past two plus years is apparently all Governor Rauner’s fault.

Pay no attention to the Speaker’s role in Illinois decline, JB will fix everything by continuing the Speaker’s failed polices that allowed Illinois to lose population and wealth over the past few decades.

    https://www.forbes.com/sites/rexsinquefield/2015/08/07/illinois-population-and-agi-continue-to-plummet-under-democratic-legislature/#4afcf7155205

After all JB, unlike Kennedy and Biss will not criticize the Speaker or his polices.

  39. - Oswego Willy - Friday, Jun 30, 17 @ 10:32 am:

    - Luck Pierre -

    “Rauner is the Status Quo!”

Kinda blows up that whole “hammer and shake” thingy.

    Want to try again?

  40. - Chicago Cynic - Friday, Jun 30, 17 @ 10:38 am:

Hey LP, are you on the payroll or just an exuberant volunteer?

  41. - Say What? - Friday, Jun 30, 17 @ 10:42 am:

Madigan could have made the state income tax increase permanent or Madigan could have had the rate extended before Rauner replaced Quinn. For political purposes, Madigan did not do it and let the temporary income tax hike expire. That’s on the Speaker.

  42. - Chicago Cynic - Friday, Jun 30, 17 @ 10:45 am:

Say what? You having some short-term memory loss there? Perhaps you’ve forgotten how Rauner personally got involved to kill an extension of the tax increase immediately after he was elected. He thought he had the upper hand. How’d that work out?

  43. - GA Watcher - Friday, Jun 30, 17 @ 10:47 am:

Got the “Junk Madigan” email with video from the IL Republican Party while House Republican Floor Leader Steve Andersson spoke in support of budget amendment.

  44. - VanillaMan - Friday, Jun 30, 17 @ 10:56 am:

    2014
“Tell ya what I’m gonna do!”
“I’ll shake up Illinois and turn it around!”
    “I’ll put jobs back!”
“I’ll put our government back in order!”
    “It’s all Madigan’s fault!”
    “Who’s with me?”
    A majority of voters applaud.

    2017
“I wanted to turn around Illinois, but Madigan won’t let me!”
“Relect me so I can finish the job Madigan never let me start.”
“Madigan will get reelected, so you need me so he won’t own the governor’s office!”
“Madigan caused this disaster that he now wouldn’t let me fix, by not passing my reforms that had no one wants!”
“If you think Junk Bond status is bad for Illinois, wait until the Democrats are elected to every statewide office!”
“I’m the only thing that could save Illinois, if Madigan would let me!”
    “Who’s with me?”

    Lucky Pierre claps.

  45. - Say What? - Friday, Jun 30, 17 @ 11:01 am:

    @ Chicago Cynic:

“Madigan could have had the rate extended before Rauner replaced Quinn…” Emphasis on “BEFORE…”

The Speaker managed to push the temporary income tax increase through during a lame duck session. He even had an appointed representative put into a vacant seat to secure an additional vote.

MJM could have done it, but he punted.

  46. - Oswego Willy - Friday, Jun 30, 17 @ 11:05 am:

    - Say What? -

Rauner ran on letting the tax expire, pushed for it to expire, as Gov-Elect asked for it to expire, and Rauner applauded the expiration.

You don’t get “Madigan!” when Rauner pushed and applauded the move, or lack thereof, no matter the issue.

  47. - DuPage - Friday, Jun 30, 17 @ 11:18 am:

Maybe Rauner is looking ahead, after he leaves office, he can increase his income by millions of dollars a week by investing in high-interest Illinois junk bonds.

  48. - Chicago Cynic - Friday, Jun 30, 17 @ 11:23 am:

Hey, that text from the GOPer is the best news of all. “Hey - Think it is worth noting that the party has pulled down the digital ad they released last night following the floor action this morning.”

That shows me they’re finally serious about getting this done.

  49. - Anon221 - Friday, Jun 30, 17 @ 11:25 am:

To Update 2- First response was, “Whaaattt!?!”
    Second response was, “Good!”

===Think it is worth noting that the party has pulled down the digital ad they released last night…===

This IS noteworthy. A little good faith could go a long way right now.

  51. - Oswego Willy - Friday, Jun 30, 17 @ 11:34 am:

It’s a great sign the ad was pulled down.

My hope is that things like this continue… Both sides standing down, to get a budget passed.

  52. - Skeptic - Friday, Jun 30, 17 @ 11:42 am:

“Hey LP, are you on the payroll or just an exuberant volunteer?” He’s more like a Ken doll, you know where you pull the string on his neck and one of a limited number of sentences comes out. “Blame Madigan!” “Madigan is a meanie!” “It’s all Madigan’s fault!” “Math is hard!”

  53. - RNUG - Friday, Jun 30, 17 @ 12:16 pm:

== Think it is worth noting that the party has pulled down the digital ad they released last night following the floor action this morning ==

This, more than anything else so far today, gives me hope we might get get a budget.

  54. - Lucky Pierre - Friday, Jun 30, 17 @ 12:44 pm:

Skeptic, How many blame Rauner Ken or Barbie dolls post here? Have any problem with those that think the Speaker can do no wrong and the Governor can do no right?

Do you think most posters think the blame is 50 /50 or more like 90/10 blame Rauner. How would that compare with the population at large?

Be fair, can’t you handle opposing viewpoints in any way?

Enjoy the freedom of expression we all enjoy thanks to Rich. The alternative in too many places in the world is a state controlled internet and news feed.

  55. - Lucky Pierre - Friday, Jun 30, 17 @ 12:52 pm:

“Madigan caused this disaster that he now wouldn’t let me fix, by not passing my reforms that had no one wants!”

No one wants reforms of property taxes, workers comp, redistricting, term limits, pensions, government consolidation?

Might want to get out of your bubble and read a poll once in a while Vanilla Man. I doubt that being opposed to all of these issues will be what the Democrats will run on.

They have run phony alternatives to these bills just to try to fool voters they agree with Rauner.

If as you say no one wants these reforms, it would have been wise for the Speaker to call the Governor’s bills as written and prove your point.

The fact he was afraid to see his members voting against them really makes your statement absurd.

  56. - VanillaMan - Friday, Jun 30, 17 @ 1:05 pm:

Rauner keeps telling us that there’s a pony under that mountain of poop. We’ve been digging for it since 2015, and now the mountain is three times higher, costs more to clean up - and there’s NO DAMN PONY.

    Rauner lied to everyone.
Now everything is worse than ever.
You Rauner supporters are still digging for that pony?

    LOL!

Polls showing that everyone wants a pony doesn’t mean there’s a pony under Rauner’s mountains of poop.

Rauner played you for a gullible rube and you keep asking why I stopped shoveling.

    Get real.
