Yeah, he doesn’t look very healthy but photos can often be deceiving. I realize I’m not part of the political wiseguys that populate this page but it grates to see Rauner receive more than his share of the blame for the condition Illinois finds itself in. If this were an accident settlement I have no doubt that there would be shared blame by Rauner and Madigan but that Madigan would be the owner of at least 75% of the blame. I know many will be happy when Rauner is gone but the primary and long term architect of the demise of Illinois will still be around and in control. So good luck to all of us who are still here.

Nope. Contrition from a politician is typically viewed positively. Bill Clinton after the ‘94 election comes to mind. It made ‘96 a whole lot easier for him. You don’t defend a fight you lose that badly. You learn from it and you move forward.

I just think the veneer of sincerity with which this blog and commentators do such blasting is, well, worth blasting. If there were just a couple of sentences that everyone could copy and paste as each comment–something like “Governor Rauner has positions with which I disagree and has done things I believe are bad for the state, and so I desire for him to lose the election and this particular day’s story does not move the needle either way”–that might save a lot of people a lot of energy.

Seems like governors have been playing with “bills” within departments and agencies for years, without transparency. Rauner views this as a traditional tool for cash management by governor’s, taken away from him by an opponent, and therefore wrong. He must know his veto was politically stupid — so in a perverse way, he has taken an unpopular position of concience.
