New York Senator endorses Lipinski’s Democratic opponent

Monday, Nov 20, 2017 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Thoughts?…

* Other stuff…

* Will pop-tax anger unseat Preckwinkle, or fizzle out?: In a poll paid for by what Preckwinkle calls “Big Soda” interests, she was less popular than Donald Trump. Preckwinkle scored an abysmal approval rating of 33 percent, while 50 percent disapproved of the job she was doing, according to the poll conducted by David Binder Research of San Francisco from Oct. 28 through Halloween — a couple weeks after county commissioners went against Preckwinkle’s wishes and repealed the pop tax.

* Kennedy lands endorsement from Danny K. Davis: “He said to me, ‘Your father and your uncle, they were willing to send in federal troops to improve the educational opportunities for people of color in the United States. How far will you go?’” Kennedy said. “I said, ‘I’ll go that far.’” … On Sunday, Cook County Commissioner Richard Boykin and former Chicago Ald. Bob Shaw endorsed Kennedy alongside Davis.

* Tom Kacich: It’s still early, but danger could await Davis in ‘18

* Parkhurst vs. Dugan? Let’s get ready for a political rumble

I live in Lipinski‘s district. Newman has been virtually invisible so far. Lipinski has been in the mailboxes for a couple of weeks now throwing red meat to liberals…… Pro immigrant/anti-Trump/anti-Wall Street type messages.

Lipinski is well known and pretty well liked in the district, even if he is a little more conservative than most Democratic primary voters here. She’s going to have to do much better than an endorsement from the junior New York senator.

Lipinski well known - yes - well liked - no. But we haven’t had a choice. Maybe Marie is “virtually invisible” but not to people who are looking for someone else to vote for. She has a good facebook presence and she’s been more active in speaking lately. I also live in the district. https://www.marienewmanforcongress.com/events/

    –Thoughts–

Gillibrand is running for president and laying down markers around the country. Lipinski’s brand of Democrat is a relatively small factor in the primary base.

  4. - Anonymous - Monday, Nov 20, 17 @ 9:54 am:

This is about Lipinski’s pro-life position and past hostility to LGBT rights. Lipinski was a co-sponsor of the 20-week abortion ban that passed the House in October. He was one of only 3 Democrats who voted in favor of the bill. Gillibrand’s PAC also supports Kyrstan Sinema for her bid for Jeff Flake’s Senate seat in Arizona. Both are Blue Dogs, but Lipinksi is considerably more socially conservative.

Wordslinger is 100% correct. Gillibrand also took a shot at the Clintons over the weekend and said Bill should have resigned after the Lewisnsky affair. After 25 years, the party is moving on. An overdue development.

Kennedy’s commercials during the appearance of Chance the Rapper on SNL were well timed. Commercial still a bit stiff, but shortened from the on line version.

  7. - Stark - Monday, Nov 20, 17 @ 10:07 am:

Lipinski will be left behind in the near future as the Democratic Party moves toward adopting policy positions that appeal to the millennials they need to turnout to vote for them.

===Gillibrand is running for president and laying down markers around the country.===

That was Jimmy Carter’s primary strategy in 74-76. He recruited every Dem congressional challenger that lost. That gave him boots on the ground all across the country and a solid base from which to build. Sounds like Gillibrand has a plan. Good for her, she’ll need it.

  9. - Roman - Monday, Nov 20, 17 @ 10:34 am:

Ironic. Gillibrand was a Lipinski-style moderate Dem when she represented an upstate district in Congress. New York City pols went nuts when she was appointed to fill Hillary’s senate seat because she was considered too conservative.

If Lipinski is ever going to lose a primary, this is probably the year given the way Trump has energized liberal voters. High turnout in the primary driven by the Guv’s race should help a challenger. And Lipinski won’t get bailed out by pro-life crossover voters pulling Dem ballots — they’ll stay home in the GOP primary to vote for Ives.

But Newman is completely unknown. She’s gonna need a ton of cash and that hasn’t materialized yet. This is a union dominated district with an aging voter base and a few still- effective ward organizations — they’re all with Lipinski. And Lipinski, like his dad, is no Beltway regular. He comes home every week and works the district hard.

A better known suburban mayor or female state legislator might have been able to cut into Lipinski’s base. But “you can’t beat nobody with nobody” — I think that political truism holds here and Lipinski wins comfortably.

20 week Abortion ban is not conservative

You have a heart beat at six weeks as does my niece’s baby

    I am voting for Lipinski

I thought it was Eisenhower who first sent Federal troops to desegregate public schools. Did JFK do the same?

  12. - West Wing - Monday, Nov 20, 17 @ 11:19 am:

    Great endorsement for Kennedy -

That Junior Senator from NY has become very chirpy lately.

  14. - wordslinger - Monday, Nov 20, 17 @ 11:39 am:

Anon 1103, in 1957, Ike sent the 101st Airborne to desegregate Little Rock Central High at the points of bayonets, after the state government refused to comply with a court order or to protect black students from a mob.

The commander was Gen. Edwin Walker, who later cracked up, resigned his commission, became a rabid Bircher, survived an assassination attempt allegedly by Lee Harvey Oswald, and was pinched a couple of times for trying to make intimate friends in Dallas public men’s rooms. A full life.

Kennedy federalized the Mississippi and Alabama national guards to desegregate Ole Miss and U of A (for which Nick
Saban and Bama fans are eternally grateful. Roll Tide.).

  15. - Anonymous - Monday, Nov 20, 17 @ 11:47 am:

Lipinski’s views mirror those of the voters in his district. It may be possible that with the passing of an older generation of voters that he will have primary trouble.

    - Wordslinger

Saban can probably thank John McKay and Bear Bryant too…

There’s a really good documentary called “Against the Tide” that tackles this well…

===The documentary paints a vivid picture of the turbulent state of Southern culture during the Civil Rights Movement and the struggle for integration. Did University of Alabama coach Paul Bear Bryant and University of Southern California coach John McKay purposefully schedule the first game of the 1970 season the first time a fully integrated team had played in Alabama as a statement against segregation?===

To bring it back to the Post,

The Kennedy legacy in civil rights is documented and those involved with that struggle discuss(ed) all the good Kennedys did, and where the frustrations with all Kennedys existed.

What can’t be denied is that Kennedys were there, they were engaged, and on the side trying to make change.

  17. - One to the Dome - Monday, Nov 20, 17 @ 2:55 pm:

Lip. was one of a handful of Dems. that voted against Obamacare in 2009… Just the facts.
