Hinz: “The governor is in full Pinocchio mode”

Friday, Feb 23, 2018 - Posted by Rich Miller

* From the Jeanne Ives campaign…

Greg Hinz, Political Columnist for Crain’s Chicago Business, penned a column addressing the fraudulent claims Governor Rauner makes about Jeanne Ives in recent attack ads and mail pieces. The ads, which have been denounced by a coalition of state legislators, portray Ives, a conservative reform Republicans, as Democrat House Speaker Mike Madigan’s lackey.

Hinz writes:

“The governor is in full Pinocchio mode on this one too. Ives hasn’t defended Madigan, but rather said that it’s stupid of Rauner to insult the man on personal terms every 20 minutes and then wonder why he won’t bargain with you on things such as the budget, taxes and workers compensation reforms. But Rauner apparently has adopted the same approach Donald Trump has to Korean dictator Kim Jong Un: talk big, and wave a really tiny stick.

    “And taxes?

“Fact is, Ives voted against the tax hike. Rauner vetoed it, but was so incompetent at dealing with the issue that his veto was overridden with help from a dozen legislative Republicans…

“You get the idea, folks. I’m sure that someone in Rauner’s camp thinks it’s really neat and cool to call Ives ‘Madigan’s lackey.’ It might even be effective with some casual voters. But for most voters, all Bruce Rauner has done is raise questions about his own integrity.

The column is here.

I’m sure he has polling data to back up this claim. /snark

Hinz is spot on. In some ways, this is Rauner’s biggest lie — and that’s really saying something. But it’s probably working.

I’m sure the 26% approval might speak to integrity, but I’d have to see the cross tabs.

  4. - Anonymous - Friday, Feb 23, 18 @ 12:37 pm:

I don’t think anyone has any questions about Bruce Rauner’s integrity at this point in time. They have all been answered.

  5. - anonin - Friday, Feb 23, 18 @ 12:37 pm:

Ives has a MOSTLY FALSE rating from Politifact. http://www.politifact.com/personalities/jeanne-ives/

  6. - Norseman - Friday, Feb 23, 18 @ 12:39 pm:

Poor Pinocchio. He had a lying problem, but being compared to Rauner is a little harsh.

  7. - Ginhouse Tommy - Friday, Feb 23, 18 @ 12:43 pm:

I’m surprised that nobody has become upset with the claim about shady union money helping her campaign. Please explain further Bruce and could you please provide proof about the term shady union funds. To me that’s slanderous.

–“Fact is, Ives voted against the tax hike. Rauner vetoed it, but was so incompetent at dealing with the issue that his veto was overridden with help from a dozen legislative Republicans…–

The fact that some of the people, all of the time, believe Rauner wasn’t complicit in the tax increase is actually a demonstration of some political competence.

Rauner did not use any of the substantial powers of his office or political organization to fight the veto override. In fact, every action he took greased the way for it to happen.

And he sure is spending the money, plus some.

    Who can’t see that?

  9. - Sue - Friday, Feb 23, 18 @ 12:52 pm:

Mr Hinz misunderstands the Rauner/ Madigan issue. Madigan never was willing to negotiate with the Governor and decided his interests were better served to wait the entire 4 years of Rauners term. Rauner could send Madigan a dozen roses a day and it would make no difference. Madigan has a single driving issue- - protect the public sector union movement which keeps him and his party in charge

  10. - Demoralized - Friday, Feb 23, 18 @ 12:59 pm:

    ==Mr Hinz misunderstands the Rauner/ Madigan issue==

Seems to me he understands it perfectly well. Nothing he said is untrue.

==protect the public sector union movement ==

Well, when we have people like you attacking public sector workers at every turn trying to take things away from them protection is needed.

  11. - Last Bull Moose - Friday, Feb 23, 18 @ 12:59 pm:

At least Pinocchio wanted to be a real boy. No sign yet that Rauner wants to be a real governor.

Lets *really* break some of this down…

“Madigan never was willing to negotiate with the Governor and decided his interests were better served to wait the entire 4 years of Rauners term.”

Rauner, who couldn’t tell the truth starting with and election night phone call, wasn’t interested in honestly brokering any deals. Ask former Leader Christine Radogno if this confuses you.

“Rauner could send Madigan a dozen roses a day and it would make no difference.”

… so instead, Rauner ran ads during session days calling Madigan corrupt, attacking Madigan, you guessed it, every day.

“Madigan has a single driving issue- - protect the public sector union movement which keeps him and his party in charge”

Actually, Madigan has had a checkered history with Labor, including public sector labor. Rauner, after Decatur, made Madigan the lone landing area for all of Labor.

Further, had Rauner found 60 and 30 and put them on stairs to embarrass Madigan, you’d have a real point. Rauner never did, also to be interpreted that Rauner never had 60 and 30, so Madigan was holding nothing back from passage.

    What else ya got?

    Can you say SB1, Sue?

  14. - GA Watcher - Friday, Feb 23, 18 @ 1:03 pm:

To be fair anonin, here’s Governor Rauner’s rating from Politifact: http://www.politifact.com/personalities/bruce-rauner/
It has a larger sample size than Representative Ives.

==Madigan has had a checkered history with Labor==

They were none to happy about Tier II. And he’s stood in the way of paying back wages owed to union members from years ago.

  16. - Anonymous - Friday, Feb 23, 18 @ 1:11 pm:

Hey Sue - so, nothing at all to say about the Governor’s lies in his commercials? The best you have is that Hinz misunderstands the issue?

How about Cardinal Cupich - did he misunderstand the issue to0?

  17. - Sue - Friday, Feb 23, 18 @ 1:19 pm:

Public Servant- yea let’s forget all the effort to move the AFCSME contract to an arbitrator. That bill was all Madigan

  18. - Name Withheld - Friday, Feb 23, 18 @ 1:24 pm:

Sorry - Anonymous @ 1:11 pm was me.

  19. - My New Handle - Friday, Feb 23, 18 @ 1:25 pm:

Madigan’s “single driving issue” is keeping a Dem majority in the House. Any policy action is informed by that objective.

  20. - Sue - Friday, Feb 23, 18 @ 1:26 pm:

To be clear- I believe Rauner has been ineffectual but at least he has made an effort to stem the tide of reckless spending and to attempt to reign in the public sector. At the end of the day- his most important legacy will be the Janus case which most likely will be 5 to 4 in favor of ending mandatory union dues in the public sector

  21. - Angel's Sword - Friday, Feb 23, 18 @ 1:29 pm:

    Sue,

When the public sector unions tried to primary dozens of Madigan’s candidates… for consecutive cycles… after Madigan tried to rob public employees of their pensions… was that the public sector unions “keeping him in power”? The public sector unions hate Madigan as much as they hate anyone. Throw out the stale 1980s Republican talking points and join us in reality please.

  22. - cdog - Friday, Feb 23, 18 @ 1:39 pm:

So Crains endorsed a 21st century Pinnochio. I’m not sure if that is creepy, or funny.

Btw, those politifact hits on Ives are nothing more than word play, messing with the premises to support their argument. From my perspective, this is a typical pattern.

  23. - VanillaMan - Friday, Feb 23, 18 @ 1:43 pm:

Instead of lying about Ives, Rauner needs to tell us what he has accomplish as governor, right?

There’s SO many things he did that anyone would support him for reelection, right?

My advice for Rauner is to do what every successful reelection candidate does to win; run on accomplishments.

No need to spread lies, Governor.

    LOL

  24. - Honeybadger - Friday, Feb 23, 18 @ 2:02 pm:

Earth to Sue, Earth to Sue….sheesh

  25. - RD55 - Friday, Feb 23, 18 @ 2:34 pm:

Sue: “To be clear- I believe Rauner has been ineffectual but at least he has made an effort to stem the tide of reckless spending . . . ”

Hey Sue, how is $1.1 billion in unappropriated FY17 spending by Rauner part of his plan to stem the tide of reckless spending again?

  26. - Sue - Friday, Feb 23, 18 @ 2:36 pm:

Rd-55- are you forgetting that the courts forced that spending. Those cases were brought by the very same folks trying to retain the status quo

  27. - Retired Educator - Friday, Feb 23, 18 @ 2:44 pm:

A person must have integrity, before it can come under fire, The Governor has none. He has lied, put peoples lives in danger at the Veterans home, and shown himself to be totally inept at governing. Being able to defend his incompetence is nearly impossible. The list of bad ideas, decisions, ineptitude is seemingly endless. It is time for a change.

  28. - Norseman - Friday, Feb 23, 18 @ 3:03 pm:

=== Rd-55- are you forgetting that the courts forced that spending. ===

No. The courted forced spending was spent. I believe there was some nuance with some of the unappropriated spending, but a lot of it involved Rauner trying to keep services going with IOUs.

  29. - Demoralized - Friday, Feb 23, 18 @ 3:07 pm:

== Those cases were brought by the very same folks trying to retain the status quo==

If you are talking about the status quo of getting paid what was owed then you are right.
Those original cases were brought by providers seeking payment for what they were owed, as well as employees who, you know, wanted to get paid for working.

  30. - Demoralized - Friday, Feb 23, 18 @ 3:18 pm:

==Those cases were brought by the very same folks trying to retain the status quo==

The only status quo they were fighting for was to be paid what they were owed. Or are you not paying those social service providers or employees for doing work? You don’t seem to be a real big fan of paying what is owed to people.

  31. - Precinct Captain - Friday, Feb 23, 18 @ 3:52 pm:

Right here on this very blog, Schnorf said that Rauner practiced the “Big Lie” campaign in 2014. He’s beeen in Pinocchio mode his whole political career.
