Signs don’t vote, but can they prevent theft?

Tuesday, Feb 27, 2018 - Posted by Rich Miller

* From congressional candidate Sean Casten

Someone has been stealing my mom's "Sean Casten for Congress" yard signs. Naturally, her response was to make another…

Stealing the candidate’s mom’s yard sign. Have you no decency sir?

  2. - A guy - Tuesday, Feb 27, 18 @ 10:21 am:

Looks like Mrs. Casten is inviting her son for coffee. lol

  3. - Soccermom - Tuesday, Feb 27, 18 @ 10:23 am:

    This is great!

Is Sean Casten going to provide the address? We should all drop in for coffee to discuss the hot issues in the Il-6 primary. (I assume they will provide decaf?)

  4. - Anon - Tuesday, Feb 27, 18 @ 10:25 am:

I’ll have lost all faith in humanity if this turns out to have been an inside job. Until then, good response from the Casten campaign.

  5. - Anonymous - Tuesday, Feb 27, 18 @ 10:28 am:

They steal signs all the time in Chicago and much more which is why we don’t put out any more signs

  6. - Soccermom - Tuesday, Feb 27, 18 @ 10:40 am:

Anon - I happen to have inside knowledge, and it was not an inside job. (Judy Casten is just an awesome person. And at the risk of trying to buy votes, I believe she would provide cookies as well as coffee, if you’re interested in talking about the issues that matter most to Democratic voters in the 6th District.)

I stole a yard sign once. A mail carrier named Chuck Norris was running in a race for alderman and I was coveting his signs. I waited until a few hours before the election started, because I didn’t want to negatively affect the race. I cherish that sign, lol.

Sign stealing in the parkway is fair game, right?

  9. - City Zen - Tuesday, Feb 27, 18 @ 11:00 am:

Maybe the village doesn’t allow political signs in the parkway.

  10. - Anon III - Tuesday, Feb 27, 18 @ 11:06 am:

I know a guy whose in-laws put up a sign for his opponent. Tough business!

  11. - Flip357 - Tuesday, Feb 27, 18 @ 11:24 am:

Stories about stealing campaign signs are as Chicago as hot dogs and deep dish pizza.

  12. - Miss Marie - Tuesday, Feb 27, 18 @ 11:46 am:

    That is really adorable.

    Please.

That district is in the burbs.

  14. - LoyalVirus - Tuesday, Feb 27, 18 @ 11:58 am:

Lawn signs *obviously* can vote - why else would candidates think they are so important? Sheesh.

  15. - Soccermom - Tuesday, Feb 27, 18 @ 11:59 am:

Flip 357 — It’s in HINSDALE. And the story is not the theft of the sign — it’s the very lovely and civil response by the candidate’s mom. Really — I think you should head over to Judy’s house and have a chat.

  16. - Anonymous - Tuesday, Feb 27, 18 @ 12:23 pm:

Signs in the parkway? Rookie mistake that’s officially village property. IDOT takes signs out of the parkway constantly. Maybe he should call the village?

  17. - train111 - Tuesday, Feb 27, 18 @ 12:35 pm:

As a resident of the 6th district, and seeing all the negativity of the Gubernatorial race, and being in Winfield Township and seeing all the Minor, Breen etal nonsense going on, It feels good that at least somebody with positive character is out there

  18. - You might say that, I couldn't - Tuesday, Feb 27, 18 @ 1:27 pm:

The sign looks like it’s in the part of the front yard between the sidewalk and the street. Where I live, it’s not considered a public right of way and signs placed there are private property.

Add me to the people who are loving Mrs. Casten’s enchanting response.

  19. - RNUG - Tuesday, Feb 27, 18 @ 1:36 pm:

Here anything from the sidewalk to the street is public property (until it’s time to maintain it!). So the pictured signs would be fair game.

But the second sign is a nice innovative approach …

  20. - RNUG - Tuesday, Feb 27, 18 @ 1:46 pm:

    RE sign stealing …

The church I attend near my house is a polling place for multiple precincts, so there are always lots of signs in the public right of way all around the church property. After the polls close, those signs that haven’t been picked up end up in the church dumpster.

I’ve gone dumpster diving to retrieve specific signs …

  21. - titan - Tuesday, Feb 27, 18 @ 2:09 pm:

In Hinsdale, the right-of-way includes the sidewalks and everything in between, and the Sign Ordinance forbids signs in the rights-of-way.

===I’ve gone dumpster diving to retrieve specific signs …===

    “Same”

Sometimes after an event or large fundraiser at a banquet type place you can get your sign fix too

I have the “Bat”inick sign, which is quite choice… I’d like an Ives for Governor sign to bookend the other sign I have of hers.

I’ll go in two weeks to start scoping the median signs screaming to be liberated.

  23. - Soccermom - Tuesday, Feb 27, 18 @ 3:00 pm:

Titan, you should knock on the door and let Mrs. Casten know. Maybe she’ll give you a cup of coffee….

  24. - Soccermom - Tuesday, Feb 27, 18 @ 3:27 pm:

Wow, those public works employees in Hinsdale must be tremendously dedicated. They’re out in the middle of the night, clearing away yard signs. Color me impressed!
