*** UPDATED 1x - Pritzker hits back *** Rauner goes statewide with “Porcelain Prince” ad buy

Tuesday, Jun 19, 2018 - Posted by Rich Miller

By Hannah Meisel

The Rauner campaign has a new ad hitting the airwaves today, dubbed “Porcelain Prince,” hitting JB Pritzker on the disconnection of toilets in a Gold Coast mansion Prizker owns, which were the basis of a claim to Cook County Assessor Joe Berrios that the home was uninhabitable. The move led to an estimated $230,000 in property tax savings, as the Sun-Times found last spring.

We’re told it’s a seven-figure ad buy on broadcast, cable and digital. The 30-second ad opens with a shot of a toilet with a crown on its seat under a portrait of Pritzker. A narrator tells the abbreviated version of the story over shots of men taking out toilets from a mansion. The ad ends with a man in a suit sitting on a toilet, reading a newspaper on the lawn, surrounded by toilets.

Full script:

Chicago’s Porcelain Prince of tax avoidance: JB Pritzker.
Pritkzer spent millions on his second Gold Coast mansion, then took out the toilets.
To dodge hundreds of thousands of property taxes, Pritzker removed every single toilet from his multi-million dollar second home and claimed it as uninhabitable.
A royal flush of tax avoidance.
Porcelain Prince JB Pritkzer: Lower taxes for him, higher taxes for you.

Notable that it’s a totally separate issue from months’ worth of recent ads tying Pritzker to Blagojevich. Another place the Rauner campaign uses the toilet issue? On its 404 error page, which I discovered while trying to access a 2014 document last month.

*** 10:27 a.m. (by Barton) ***It’s almost like the Pritzker camp expected this line of attack.

Pritzker is up with an ad that hits Rauner for having nine homes, filing his own property tax appeals, and then claims the Governor wants to raise property taxes. It does not address the uninhabitable declaration in the Rauner spot. Have a look…

“Second home” Uh, the guy has a lot more than two, and he doesn’t live in this house, which is the whole point. It’s a stupid loophole, but if you aren’t going to use a house as a home then it makes sense to not pay for it as a home.

  2. - efudd - Tuesday, Jun 19, 18 @ 8:14 am:

Ask 10 people who don’t follow politics if they have the slightest idea what this ad alludes to.
Then ask the same 10 about dead veterans in a Quincy home.
    Rauner’s got nothing.

  3. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Jun 19, 18 @ 8:18 am:

    Bruce Rauner is unlikable.

The goal with this ad is to try to make JB even more unlikable, but here’s the rub…

Rauner is the incumbent governor. Rauner has a record, is the worst Republican governor in America, and still is trailing Pritzker, as Pritzker isn’t polling himself all that great.

    Why is this important?

It’s important, due in large part, because Rauner, as an incumbent… forced a budget standoff, refused to sign budgets for an entire GA (99th), and this GA… first overrode Rauner to save Illinois from Rauner, then voted 152-20, forcing a Rauner signature, or face humiliation of first not signing a budget… ever… and that overwhelming bipartisan majority poised to override Bruce Rauner.

So… we get ads like this… stinging ads… biting ads… ads with cache… ads Pritzker can’t refute.

    To the Ad, it’s a “B+”

    “Why?”

It’s not an “A” because, while the visuals are fun and stinging, and they make a statement, the issue isn’t removing the toilets, (it IS, but), the issue is removing the toilets and how a rich guy gamed a system normal voters can’t.

The “cuteness” of the attack… coulda made more of a point that Pritzker games the system, and voters pay. Couple more points, coulda been an “A”, but this “B+” will hurt.

The Pritzker Crew better wise up.

Rauner gave no quarter, no peace, no time to breathe for Gov. Pat Quinn.

The feel is Rauner, unlikable as he is, is still out there, still going after it, “hungry”, and while Rauner’s Crew seems to give up making Bruce Rauner remotely likable, Rauner’s Crew hasn’t let up on making Pritzker more and more unlikable

For the love of Pete… what are y’all waiting for?

  4. - Downstate - Tuesday, Jun 19, 18 @ 8:24 am:

    efudd,
I’d partially disagree with your assessment. The majority of people in Chicago are FAR more upset about their property taxes than they are the Quincy Vets home.

  5. - A guy - Tuesday, Jun 19, 18 @ 8:25 am:

This is the ad Sling has been waiting for. The size of the buy indicates he’s taking Sling’s advice. This one’s easy to understand for anyone. Cheap Billionaire gets even richer while we’re hoping the one toilet we have in our house doesn’t clog.

    Good ad.

===…more upset about their property taxes than they are the Quincy Vets home.===

Let’s see if that changes when the Quincy Home ad for the general gets released, whenever that is.

  7. - Real - Tuesday, Jun 19, 18 @ 8:33 am:

So are we going to see Rauner repeatedly talking about toilets or Blago up until election day? Anyone else notice how Rauner won’t talk about the issues faces people every day? Maybe it’s because Rauner knows his side of the issues is only for the rich and not for the poor, working class, or middle-class. Even when it comes to a graduated income tax Rauner is on the side of the rich.

  8. - Macbeth - Tuesday, Jun 19, 18 @ 8:35 am:

Given what’s going on at the border right now — and given the fact that 12 veterans died on Rauner’s watch — this is beyond offensive.

  9. - Rabid - Tuesday, Jun 19, 18 @ 8:39 am:

The Facebook prince of darkness lowered his property tax onto cook county residents. Rauner gets his tax relief

Willy-you might want to trying driving north of I 80 where 75% of the votes are before you make statements on what issues are important to whom. The property tax evasion issue in the City/burbs and collars is toxic for JB. This ad is a home run.

Apologies on the geography. Meant I 88. Either way, again you missed the point. The tax cheat issue much bigger for JB than Quincy is for Rauner. Even Durbin exonerated Rauner on Quincy. Tough issue but substantially less important than property taxes where overwhelming majority of voters live.

  15. - Rabid - Tuesday, Jun 19, 18 @ 8:56 am:

Team Rauner is going down the toilet. Do they think the other 101 countys care about cook county taxes

  16. - Stoph - Tuesday, Jun 19, 18 @ 8:57 am:

Problem is JB followed the law, simple statement from his campaign. Fact is Rauner has done nothing in 4 years to fix this or any problem (in fact he has made it worse) and he will do nothing for next 4 years. I will close these loopholes. I am JB and I am running to lead this state into the future.

  17. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Jun 19, 18 @ 8:59 am:

    ===Apologies on the geography. Meant I 88.===

    No you didn’t.

LOL… tell that to geography. Also, Kendall County is a collar county. Keep up.

===The tax cheat issue much bigger for JB than Quincy is for Rauner.===

No one died… not paying taxes.

You think someone’s life is worth less than paying taxes? That’s says more about you than you are clueless about geography.

“As long as *I* don’t die from the Rauner Administration’s incompetence, I’m cool”?

    Wow.

-Except it is Rauner who was in a position to fix the property tax issue that the dems proposed to him last year. It was Rauner who sabatoged those efforts in a way to get his way or the highway.

Angry Willy. Touched a nerve. Might want to keep up in issues and you would be aware of what Durbin said a while back. Sorry I disagreed with the all knowing Willy. Jeez

  28. - wordslinger - Tuesday, Jun 19, 18 @ 9:22 am:

    Took them long enough.

This has way more juice than Blago babbling about something-something on tape. He’s old news. A property-tax dodge literally hits home and the wallet right now.

I get the temptation for the whimsical approach (because toilet humor), and “porcelain prince” could stick.

But I would have gone angry and edgy. I wouldn’t want people to laugh at the spot, I’d want them to get honked.

For one, I’d use real dollar-figures — “$23OK property tax dodge scheme, money that should have gone to schools and police” — and repeat and super.

Plus, no mention Pritzker is a billionaire.

Still, you really can’t miss with the material.

    ===Angry Willy. Touched a nerve.===

Nah. I think it’s sad someone thinks dodging taxes is more important than gross incompetence and covering up deaths of veterans, while also contemplating blaming those deaths on a combat woundeded veteran.

Also, “telling” me you meant I-88… yeah, we all refer to those “south of 88” as downstate.

You knew what you said, just own it.

===Might want to keep up in issues and you would be aware of what Durbin said a while back.===

Cite and quote please. You “learn” me. Thanks.

  31. - The Most Anonymous - Tuesday, Jun 19, 18 @ 9:27 am:

B-. The only reason it isn’t a C for me, is because it’s re-upping this issue that will surely impact some votes, just as it did in the primary. The political ad game is so consistently lame and cartoonish. Blah. JB’s ads move away from that aesthetic and tone, which I appreciate. Let’s hope they get aggressive fast, but maybe their polling shows they don’t need to just yet.

    Agree. 1,000%.

If you want voters angry about it, make them furious about it. That’s why it’s a “B+” and not an “A”

===The majority of people in Chicago are FAR more upset about their property taxes than they are the Quincy Vets home.===

I fail to see why Chicago tax payers should be upset about their property taxes. For many years Chicago tax rates were the lowest in all of Cook County. Chicago property owners now have about the 8th lowest tax rate in the county, one that is well below the county average.

In my mind the big question is when will property tax payers in Illinois start asking Rauner when the property tax freeze he campaigned on takes effect.

  34. - 19th Ward guy - Tuesday, Jun 19, 18 @ 9:29 am:

===And its not my job to make sure you’re up to speed on issues.===

No. Here’s how this works… you want the fact, cite it. If you can’t… don’t use it.

Where can I find this exoneration?

  36. - Ole General - Tuesday, Jun 19, 18 @ 9:34 am:

Didn’t realize Kendall County was a Collar county? Only been here my entire life and never heard anyone refer to Kendall or Oswego as connected to Chicago politics.

I guess the Chicago encyclopedia is wrong too.

    http://www.encyclopedia.chicagohistory.org/pages/3.html

And 19th ward, word to the wise, Willy will expect you to use google to find every single post he has ever submitted to CapFax. Which is averaging about 50 posts a day or 100 if Rauner is in the news, making it downright hilarious.

  37. - wordslinger - Tuesday, Jun 19, 18 @ 9:39 am:

It’s inexplicable to me that Pritzker didn’t try to knock down this issue months ago.

The easiest thing in the world would have been to throw some nameless, faceless accountants under the bus and say: “But I’m responsible. I’m in charge. And, as I will when I’m governor, when a problem needs to be fixed, I’ll take charge and do it.”

Then, he writes a $230K check to the Cook County Treasurer.

Pritzker is worth $3.5 billion, according to Forbes. $230K isn’t even weekend beer money.

  38. - 19th Ward guy - Tuesday, Jun 19, 18 @ 9:41 am:

Didn’t know we all answered to Willy. But glad to know and will not adjust my comments accordingly. Angry stuff not a great way to have a discussion, but I’m now on notice.

  39. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Jun 19, 18 @ 9:48 am:

As one of the 5 fastest growing counties in America, let alone Illinois, Kendall is considered rural, yet suburban, and part of the Chicago media market.

    Also… from “Wikipedia”… https://bit.ly/2M2ak7e

    Under government…

===Since the 1990s, the gradual shift of power within the Republican Party towards Southern Evangelicals has meant that Kendall, like the other “collar counties”, has trended Democratic. Illinois native Barack Obama became the first Democrat to carry the county since Franklin Pierce in 1852, and the first Democrat ever to obtain an absolute majority. Obama did not repeat this feat against Mitt Romney in 2012, but opposition to the populism of Donald Trump amongst the mostly affluent population meant that Hillary Clinton came within seventy-seven votes of emulating Obama in 2016.===

Did you rate the ad, - Ole General - or you still looking to explain the whole “War of Northern Agression” thingy, LOL

No. When called out, you can show that fact.

Still waiting… where did Durbin exonerate Rauner?

    Back to the Ad…

If you’re going to use comedy to have Pritzker mock the lil guy… toilets on the driveway… how does that instill anger as the visual? The ad itself works, it’s missing the mark to tap into real festering anger… by being cute?

  41. - Ole General - Tuesday, Jun 19, 18 @ 9:54 am:

Still working that War of Northern Aggression shtick, Willy? Maybe drive to Second City this weekend and learn how to improve the bit. Unlike your attempt at humor, this ad made me chuckle at my desk.

Because I rarely laugh at political ads, I rate this an A- on humor alone. But I agree with the above commentary that better explantation on how much he ripped-off the City would vault this to a solid A.

At any rate, Wikipedia Willy is my new moniker for you. It’s a good descriptor in all aspects.

  53. - efudd - Tuesday, Jun 19, 18 @ 10:39 am:

Sorry guys, if this plus FBI tapes is Rauner’s one-two, and he’s throwing it in June, I don’t see it as having staying power.
Also, for those Repubs on here, if it is understood that what Pritzker did was legal, wasn’t he simply being smart in dodging taxes? You know, like the President bragged about during the campaign.

  54. - Stuntman Bob's Brother - Tuesday, Jun 19, 18 @ 10:41 am:

A ‘B” at best, because as has been stated above, it didn’t include the numbers. But at this point, while political ads may drive turnout, the vast majority of voters likely already have their minds made up on whom they are voting against (for me, it’s “Madigan”, even though he’s not running). How many “undecideds” can there really be in this state? Unless something new, and BIG, comes to light, I’d say this cake is already baked.

    Pritzker Crew,

Fairly good, but if you were to tell me Rauner took a homeowner exemption in Winnetka and his income tax return has the Winnetka address… how does Rauner claim a Chicago residence to clout his denied Winnetka-living daughter?

CPS parents getting notice now where their kids are placed without clout would be… timely.

  57. - wondering - Tuesday, Jun 19, 18 @ 11:02 am:

JB was legal, how soon we forget Rauner claimed an illegal homestead exemption…tried to dismiss it as a mere clerical error. I hope JB’s future adds mention that. It will hit home.

  58. - walker - Tuesday, Jun 19, 18 @ 11:08 am:

Good. Taxes are viewed as too high, always, everywhere, by everyone who pays them.

This provides a tax-related reason to dislike this specific billionaire. JB, with his kindly image, has skated past that hole in the ice until now.

  59. - Anon - Tuesday, Jun 19, 18 @ 11:11 am:

Couldn’t JB just put in a garden and have the property taxed as farm land? Probably would help him downstate and his taxes would be lower.

Then he can become governor and the rest of you can pay your “fair” share.

    Politics as usual.

  60. - wondering - Tuesday, Jun 19, 18 @ 11:15 am:

Someone should investigate Rauner’s sales tax avoidance in Montana.

  61. - Grand Avenue - Tuesday, Jun 19, 18 @ 11:17 am:

Response is kind of weak - a billionaire attacking a half-billionaire for how many houses he owns doesn’t make sense.

The better property tax attack on Rauner would be for him taking 3 homeowners exemptions at the same time rather than filing appeals.

  62. - Anon - Tuesday, Jun 19, 18 @ 11:19 am:

It’s one thing to avoid taxes while campaigning to lower or freeze them.

It’s hard to understand someone who campaigns on raising your taxes while avoiding his own.

  63. - Huh? - Tuesday, Jun 19, 18 @ 11:26 am:

The ad title was cute, but won’t change my mind about voting against 1.4%. ABR

  64. - City Zen - Tuesday, Jun 19, 18 @ 11:26 am:

== how does Rauner claim a Chicago residence to clout his denied Winnetka-living daughter?==

That’s not a bad idea, but might open the door to JB having to explain his children’s very expensive private school tuition and Pritzker’s charter high school, neither of which align with the progressive party line.

  65. - Huh? - Tuesday, Jun 19, 18 @ 11:41 am:

Where is the nexus between pritzker paying private school tuition and 1.4% clouting his daughter into a COS prep school? One guy pays, other throws weight around.

People who say they’re angry about what JB did to not pay property taxes would do exactly the same thing if they could get away with it.

  67. - Da Big Bad Wolf - Tuesday, Jun 19, 18 @ 11:48 am:

==The tax cheat issue much bigger for JB than Quincy is for Rauner.==

What tax cheat issue? 1. Vacant homes get a property tax break because there is nobody to use libraries, schools, etc. If people think vancant homes shouldn’t get this break let’s have this discussion. 2. A home can be vacant and uninhabitable with toilets. 3. Removing toilets isn’t something only billionaires are able to do.I can remove one in 15 minutes with a wrench. What I can’t do is buy a house in the Gold Coast and just let it sit there. 4. The only way JB could cheat would be living in the house and lying about not living in the house.

So does someone have pictures of JB flipping pancakes in the kitchen window of said house? If not, why should anyone care about toilets?

  68. - SSL - Tuesday, Jun 19, 18 @ 11:50 am:

JB doesn’t like to admit he’s wrong, which is the problem with most of these guys. He could have put this to bed awhile ago, but it’s too late now, and it’s a great ad. I wouldn’t be surprised to see more takes on this issue, because it will resonate with a lot of people.

I don’t think it will change the outcome of the election though. That only happens if another tape of JB emerges.

  69. - City Zen - Tuesday, Jun 19, 18 @ 11:53 am:

==One guy pays, other throws weight around.==

You may want to cross-reference Pritzker donations to a certain Chicago private school his children attend to the number of applicants turned away from said private school. Proof that it is possible to pay and through your considerable weight around.

  70. - wondering - Tuesday, Jun 19, 18 @ 12:07 pm:

No matter, Rauner’s ad hominem attacks do not alter the fact that Illinois is worse off for having Rauner as governor and he offers only more of same. Let’s try someone else.

  71. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Jun 19, 18 @ 1:23 pm:

===That’s not a bad idea, but might open the door to JB having to explain his children’s very expensive private school tuition and Pritzker’s charter high school, neither of which align with the progressive party line.===

    And this…

===…certain Chicago private school his children attend to the number of applicants turned away…===

It’s a private school. Private. Not a public school where everyone can attend, that meet the geographic requirements.

This is like me complaining I get bumped from playing Fox Bend… but really being upset I’m not a member at Olympia Fields.

Olympia Fields can choose, Fox Bend, I get to choose and if they can fit me in, I can go.

  72. - SSL - Tuesday, Jun 19, 18 @ 1:49 pm:

You should join Olympia Fields. Two great tracks and they need the dues.

I need to get “on” as a guest.

If you know a member that will get me on, “hold the line and give your number to the producer ‘off-air’, thanks”

    Great tracks.

  74. - BlueDogDem - Tuesday, Jun 19, 18 @ 2:30 pm:

Willy. What sort of handicap you carrying? I am looking for a fourth for a benefit scramble on July 4th.I

  75. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Jun 19, 18 @ 2:32 pm:

I’ll be out of state on the 4th.

    Sorry.

  76. - wordslinger - Tuesday, Jun 19, 18 @ 2:36 pm:

–I’ll be out of state on the 4th.–

Another example of the Illinois Exodus. Oh, the humanity.

    We’re having t-shirts and coozies made…

  78. - Anon2 - Tuesday, Jun 19, 18 @ 2:52 pm:

The Pritzker response is a fine spot, but not at all a fan of using the words “same thing.” Don’t say something is worthy of being in an attack ad, and acknowledge in the same sentence that you’ve done the “same thing.” Sloppy line in a decent spot, in my opinion.

Also…got a chuckle out of me at 2:36, word.

  79. - Arsenal - Tuesday, Jun 19, 18 @ 3:51 pm:

That both billionaire candidates are running ads accusing each other of shady property tax deals probably means neither one will break through.

If JB developed the line about Rauner wanting to hike property taxes, though, that could make sure Rauner never closes the gap.

  80. - I Miss Bentohs - Tuesday, Jun 19, 18 @ 4:32 pm:

As for the ad, I give it an A- because I laughed, the nickname might stick and the conclusion of raising our taxes while avoiding his will be effectively repeated ad nauseam.

As for the other part of this whole thread, here our local paper the Prairie State Wire on January 5 had an article but the closest quote to Durbin exonerating could be:
“In my conversation with the governor this morning, he told me he was personally committed to make sure we can do anything we could, and I told him I would stand by him,” Durbin said

I’d put 17th in the mostly false category.

It’s also worth noting, no more kind words from Durbin could I find after January 5 as he came to the full realization how much Rauner *&*^ this up.

  81. - Pundent - Tuesday, Jun 19, 18 @ 6:12 pm:

This would be a very effective ad if the guy running it wasn’t ridiculously wealthy himself.

Rauner needs to give us a reason to vote for him but is incapable of doing so. As a result this is what we get. A battle between two rich guys and who gamed the system more will be fought to a draw. At the end of the day a governor has to run on his accomplishments.

  82. - Stuntman Bob's Brother - Tuesday, Jun 19, 18 @ 7:41 pm:

==Rauner needs to give us a reason to vote for him==

Don’t underestimate the contempt for the party most responsible for getting Illinois into this mess to begin with (hint, it’s the party that held a “trifecta” of state power from 2003 to 2014, led by the guy whose ring The Prince will be kissing daily if elected https://ballotpedia.org/Party_control_of_Illinois_state_government). Will that be enough for Rauner? Doubtful. Maybe if the next ad ups the ante to “Porcine Porcelain Prince”, but still doubtful.

  83. - Rabid - Tuesday, Jun 19, 18 @ 8:12 pm:

JB lowered his taxes legally, Rauner lied to lower his taxes

  84. - Pundent - Tuesday, Jun 19, 18 @ 9:42 pm:

The contempt is certainly real. But the governor went from “shaking things up” to “I’m not in charge”.

  85. - HavanaDuck - Tuesday, Jun 19, 18 @ 10:18 pm:

Just paid my property taxes, 2nd installment due around Labor Day. Coworkers all complaining about theirs, never been higher. We all know IL people that have moved out of state, and can’t believe how much cheaper their property taxes are there.

Fact-Illinois residents all complain about their property tax, and NOW is the time that people complain about it. JB’s Toilet removal to lower his property taxes seems like a sneaky/insider thing to average person.
The Prince of Porcelain ad has/will strike a chord. Today was first time that I saw it on local TV. Takes a few dozen reruns for message to get thru to the mass public.

  86. - Rabid - Wednesday, Jun 20, 18 @ 6:17 am:

Who do you want to lead the state, someone who uses the law, or someone who lies
