Rate Rauner’s new ad: “Just Call Madigan”

Tuesday, Jul 17, 2018 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Press release…

The Rauner campaign is launching a new ad titled “Just Call Madigan” highlighting JB Pritzker’s corrupt connections to Mike Madigan. Pritzker took advantage of his insider relationships with Mike Madigan and Joe Berrios to save thousands on his property taxes.

Property taxes too high? If you’re a politically-connected insider like Pritzker, that’s no problem! Just Call Madigan!

* Here it is

* Script

Are your property taxes too high?

Tight on cash?

Well if you’re a politically-connected billionaire that’s no problem.

Don’t worry, Just Call Madigan!

For shady politicians like JB Pritzker, high property taxes are no problem.

Madigan and his cronies have their property taxes reassessed and reduced in no time.

JB Pritzker did it and saved a bundle.

So if you want a sweet deal on your property taxes, do what JB Pritzker does…

Just Call Madigan!

…Adding… I’m told by the Rauner campaign that this is currently an online ad, but that it will eventually air on TV.

The Pritzker Crew just isn’t talented enough to turn the property tax dodge (which shoulda been rectified and known about to attack Rauner’s own property tax issues) and make it about Rauner lining and taking a tax homeowner exemption in Winnetka and sending, after clouting his denied daughter, to a CPS school, Payton Prep.

    They just lack talent.

Does this cartoonish style work in focus groups or does it just make the people who produce it smile?

  3. - VanillaMan - Tuesday, Jul 17, 18 @ 10:03 am:

It’s also not a problem with politically connected multi-millionaires failing in the governor’s office.

==Does this cartoonish style work in focus groups or does it just make the people who produce it smile?==

I think they just want to try something different because nothing else has moved the numbers so far. So the ads get a little more, shall we say, creative.

Are people refusing to rate it because they know its effective?

    Solid B +

the tone is upbeat and the colors match. Takes going negative to a fun new level, that I think will resonate well with voters. Hope to see more of this.

  6. - VanillaMan - Tuesday, Jul 17, 18 @ 10:10 am:

This will definately drive down Michael Madigan’s numbers in his bid to be governor - no, wait…

  7. - JS Mill - Tuesday, Jul 17, 18 @ 10:12 am:

Funny how the hon Stu thing hasn’t changed for Rauner even after all of their protestations over JB’s ad. I guess they skipped over how the whole thing is legal? Crappy maybe, but totally legal.

  8. - City Zen - Tuesday, Jul 17, 18 @ 10:13 am:

Toilet won’t flush? Don’t worry, just call Madigan.

  9. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Jul 17, 18 @ 10:14 am:

    It’s a “C+”

It reinforces a thing Rauner wants reinforced, but it seems forced, forced comedy to the point, and Rauner needs people to start liking him, this doesn’t make Rauner more likable or make the point any better than the other ads.

    “C+“

    What is this, kindergarten?

  11. - DuPage Bard - Tuesday, Jul 17, 18 @ 10:21 am:

    Rate it a C
At some point Rauner has to start telling people why he should be Governor.
The ads about DCFS and Quincy Veterans haven’t even hit yet. He needs to solidify why he deserves another term. he’s not running against Jeanne this time.

    C-

This is amateur hour. Good senior high class project quality, but if you paid someone for this, I’d be disappointed.

  14. - Amalia - Tuesday, Jul 17, 18 @ 10:27 am:

B because some people in the pundit class don’t like the local tv ad flair of it. but it will work with lots of people, and it’s peppy and hilarious. it gets the point across well.

  15. - Arsenal - Tuesday, Jul 17, 18 @ 10:29 am:

==Good senior high class project quality, but if you paid someone for this, I’d be disappointed.==

Well, if it’s online only, they haven’t paid *much*.

As online only, it’s a kind of savvy message-test.

“Property taxes too high? Just call Madigan (banned punctuation)”

My first impression was, Madigan= Lower Property Taxes, what’s not to like? The ad gives no solid connection that only the rich can afford the law firm Madigan is in to be able to file these appeals. It really makes it appear that, you got a problem with high property taxes, then Call Madigan. Viewers aren’t going to associate this ad with Lawyer Madigan, they (more likely) will associate it with Speaker Madigan, and it infers that he has the power to lower property taxes. Is that really what Rauner wants people to take away from this ad??? C- leaning toward D.

    ===and the colors match===

Looks like the Rauner crew discovered Garanimals.

  18. - Juice - Tuesday, Jul 17, 18 @ 10:46 am:

Well, if you go by the Rich Miller school of watching with the sound off, it literally says that if you want to lower your property taxes, Mike Madigan will get the job done.

So on that basis, I guess I will say D.

With the sound on, I guess I would give it a C, it talks infers that billionaires are taking advantage of the system. But it also kinda makes it sound like Madigan’s services would be available to anyone. so why not hire the guy that the billionaires are hiring?

Bottom line, I think this probably works better as an ad for Madigan and Getzendanner than it does as an ad for Citizens for Rauner.

  19. - Lucky Charms - Tuesday, Jul 17, 18 @ 10:53 am:

    So deeply unserious

  20. - walker - Tuesday, Jul 17, 18 @ 10:53 am:

B- Simple. Produces a tag line or image that that people might remember. That’s all you can expect. The bulk of most ad content is quickly forgotten.

Anon221 above has an interesting take. Do you really want people to hang on to that tag line?

    I think it works.

  21. - Anon0091 - Tuesday, Jul 17, 18 @ 11:00 am:

Boy, if this was Chris Kennedy who hired Madigan’s firm for his property tax appeal, this would be an A-. But of course JB didn’t do that so I’ll give it a C-

  22. - anon2 - Tuesday, Jul 17, 18 @ 11:01 am:

The ad piques my curiosity about whether Rauner ever appeals assessments on his properties. I suspect he does. If so, who does he call?

  23. - 360 Degree TurnAround - Tuesday, Jul 17, 18 @ 11:18 am:

==Well, if it’s online only, they haven’t paid *much*.

I presume they pay someone to develop the message (granted that the message isn’t new) and produce the ad.

  24. - Arsenal - Tuesday, Jul 17, 18 @ 11:22 am:

==I presume they pay someone to develop the message (granted that the message isn’t new) and produce the ad.==

Well, sure, but for a campaign, making an ad isn’t the real cost, it’s airing it.

  25. - 360 Degree TurnAround - Tuesday, Jul 17, 18 @ 11:32 am:

    agreed

  26. - A guy - Tuesday, Jul 17, 18 @ 11:33 am:

I’m not a big fan of the cartoon style, Batman-like, oof, pow, bam, ads.
It’s decent. Gets its point across. But not great.

  27. - Anona - Tuesday, Jul 17, 18 @ 11:34 am:

Wow, am I tired of this line of ads. Move along kids, nothing new to see here.

  28. - Practical Politics - Tuesday, Jul 17, 18 @ 11:37 am:

C+ The material is familiar, but as has been often noted on this blog it is all on Pritzker for not getting this story explained months ago. Writing a check for the taxes would have been acceptable.

On a side note, I was called by a J. B. worker seeking to solicit my vote. When I expressed displeasure about his toilets being removed making his building uninhabitable, the person answered that “it is a hundred and twenty year old building” on Astor Street and that the plumbing needed to be upgraded. How long does it take to make repairs?

  29. - Arsenal - Tuesday, Jul 17, 18 @ 11:40 am:

==Wow, am I tired of this line of ads. Move along kids, nothing new to see here.==

At the rate the Rauner campaign has been going, they probably will move on by Friday.

But I think ant-Madigan is probably their strongest message.

  31. - Arsenal - Tuesday, Jul 17, 18 @ 12:03 pm:

BTW, did JB really use Madigan-Getzendanner?

  32. - Louis G. Atsaves - Tuesday, Jul 17, 18 @ 1:06 pm:

Found it OK, but a little busy with the graphics zooming in and out.

  33. - Rabid - Tuesday, Jul 17, 18 @ 4:53 pm:

JB is not a sworn politician, he’s a candidate

  34. - Rusty - Wednesday, Jul 18, 18 @ 3:52 pm:

Rauner will say anything to demonize anyone that fights for the union.
