Rauner has to explain immigration stance at photo op

Monday, Oct 15, 2018 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Ouch…

* From Tina’s story

It was designed to be a feel-good event with the Loyola Ramblers’ beloved Sister Jean.

But it ended with Gov. Bruce Rauner yet again explaining his position on illegal immigration.

That’s because the 99-year-old Loyola University-Chicago basketball team chaplain was being honored in part for helping the university’s undocumented students receive financial aid. That caught the governor off guard on Friday, even though the state’s Senior Hall of Fame award was being bestowed by Rauner’s own Illinois Department on Aging, and the governor was helping present the honor. […]

Speaking to reporters after the induction, Rauner was asked whether he supports financial aid programs for undocumented students, in light of Sister Jean’s work with the program. The university was the first to accept undocumented medical students, and also has a “safe space” program for undocumented students.

“I’m not familiar with the [Magis] program,” Rauner said. “I’d have to learn more about it before I could comment on that program.” […]

Earlier this week, Rauner came under fire for linking illegal immigration to crime.

* Other reporters ignored the flap, however, so it wasn’t a total wash…

* ABC 7: Loyola’s Sister Jean receives Senior Illinoisans Hall of Fame Award: “The world knows her as the chaplain for the Loyola Men’s Basketball team but here in Chicago, and on the Loyola campus - we know her as a teacher, counselor, adviser, coach, and civil rights activist,” Rauner said. “She sets a world-class example for all of us to follow.”

* Tribune: Loyola’s Sister Jean, 99, is inducted into state’s Senior Hall of Fame: “Sister Jean represents all that is wonderful in life: faith, love of community, love of God, giving back to those most vulnerable among us,” Gov. Bruce Rauner said.

    This was a colossal, “epic” advance failure, like one where you look at the campaign AND the governor’s office advance staff(s) and everyone around the governor and just laugh out loud at the ineptitude.

    No a single person thought…

    “Why exacting are they honoring Sister Jean?”

    The only thing that might be worse is if Rauner attended a dinner in honor of Blase Cardinal Cupich, and finding out its in honor of his pro-life work.

    This “Sister Jean” fiasco is one of many lil instances where the BTIA(tm) fails to be the Superstars.

    The only thing worse?

    “As a white male, I congratulate Sister Jean for… “

    The saving grace… Diana Rickert isn’t there anymore to write that.

    One of many easily to point to moments… why Rauner is at 30% and can’t fool all the people all the time.

    Diana Rauner has branded she and Bruce fools.

    Rauner is as unlucky as he is bad.

    ===Rauner is as unlucky as he is bad.===

    Unlucky is stepping into a puddle wearing flip flops.

    The event, why Sister Jean is being honored, and what she did to deserve it is known.

    This is failure to execute and understand advance work.

    They couldn’t send someone with a proclamation?

    The optics were bad before Rauner went. Rauner went anyway. Yikes.

    Actually, Rauner did get lucky on this one.

    I saw several newscasts Friday evening and none of them covered the immigration angle like the Sun-Times did. As Rich alludes, Rauner got the standard photo-up coverage. Never underestimate the ability of broadcast “journalists” to miss a good story.

    Hey, remember when Bruce and the BTIA(tm) thought they were going to get a cheap and easy pop from the African-American community by bringing in Chance The Rapper for a glossy meet-and-greet after his Grammy win? Remember how Chance took the podium after the meeting and ground the governor into a fine powder, because he’s a smart guy whose dad played the game for Democrats for decades? Basic research hasn’t really ever been Team Rauner’s “thing,” has it?

    Is the BTIA team advising Rauner?

    For his big bucks the team he hired really (rhymes with bucks).

    Bruce and Diana Rauner are about branding.

    They aren’t about having folks see where things could backfire when getting close to popular people.

    As your point is well made, let me expound on that Chance’s social media footprint where people also pay attention didn’t help Rauner when Chance can, with no money behind it, reach tens of thousands with a tweet or a picture.

    Good point.
