Rep. Christian Mitchell resigns from the Illinois House

Friday, Jan 11, 2019 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Mitchell starts a new job as deputy governor on Monday…

January 11, 2019

Mr. Speaker,

I’m writing this letter to tender my resignation from the Illinois House of Representatives, effective immediately.

Serving in the Illinois House has been one of the honors of my life, an honor bestowed upon me by the residents of the 26th District on three separate occasions. During the time I was fortunate enough to spend as a Member, we passed historic education funding reform, expanded Medicaid coverage to more Illinoisans, expanded background checks to cover private handgun sales, and extended the legal right to all Illinoisans to marry the person that they love. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to work with my colleagues in the General Assembly on behalf of my constituents in the 26th District, as well as the people of our great State.

We’ve endured a difficult time in the past four years, and have much to rebuild in our State: our roads and bridges, our neglected universities, our frayed social safety net, and perhaps most importantly, the trust of the people of Illinois that government is on the side of working people and those who are in need. As I move into a different branch of government, I look forward to working with all of my colleagues, friends and others in and around the legislature to restore the promise of Illinois for its citizens of today and for generations to come.

Sincerely,

State Representative Christian Mitchell

    Why now?

  4. - Anonymous - Friday, Jan 11, 19 @ 12:37 pm:

    Put this another way, Christian Mitchell got Pritzker his 15% salary bump and now will receive personally from Pritzker over $500,000 total over the next 4 years.

    This business of Illinois elected representatives retiring or resigning immediately after winning reelection is becoming tiresome. If you’re elected, serve your term, then don’t run for reelection. Let the voters decide who replaces you.

    Don’t you dare question the Illinois way.

    Anonymous, i don’t know how you can read that and think he’s not worth every penny.

    Bright future. Interested to see how he’ll perform his new duties.

    Who else could we not have gotten to jump ship from $68,000 but for the 15% and 100% bumps at agencies and GOV?

    There is a wealth of talent leaving the GA that will be missed - Mitchell is one of them. He is wicked smart. Looking forward to seeing how he fits into rebuilding our state.

    Might want to get the daylight bulb installed buddy. How was Mitchell to know Pritzker would be elected and offer him this specific position with a certain platform of responsibility before the election? And to know this all before the filing deadline for renomination to his state rep seat back in 2018? Again, get the daylight bulb and not the dim one next time.

    ===Why now? ===

    Huh? He’s starting a new job Monday. It’s in the post. Are you that dense?

  13. - Marky Mark - Friday, Jan 11, 19 @ 1:03 pm:

    I agree wholeheartedly with JB13. If you don’t intend to serve, don’t run. And if your constituents are expecting you to run but you’ve decided not to, Congressman Gutierrez, announce it timely so that voters have meaningful choices in the primaries. Elected office is not something you bequeath.

    ===If you don’t intend to serve, don’t run===

    He filed petitions in November of 2017. Well before the primary and almost a year before the general. This objection of yours is a non issue.

    Instead of paying Christian Mitchell via the Strategy Group as he did during his campaign, now JB can cuts those checks to Christian directly.

    Or both. Probably both.

    That’s a reason for more special elections, not a reason for people to stay put. Although, even as it stands, voters will get to weigh in soon enough. His replacement will have to start circulating petitions in 10 months…

    Great addition to the administration. An asset to the governor-elect.

    Christian Mitchell is one of the most thoughtful and deliberate members of the General Assembly. Not to mention he’s a pretty darn good guy. The haters gonna hate, but this isn’t someone you should direct negativity toward. Best of luck to you Christian

    Exactly. Mitchell has always impressed me with his thoughtfulness and sharp intellect.
