Question of the day

Monday, Mar 25, 2019 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Our sorry state

Some potholes on Interstate 255 in Cahokia are so bad, drivers got flat tires Monday morning.

Illinois Department of Transportation crews are on the scene to make a fix. They’ve closed the far right lane of northbound I-255 just south of Illinois 157.

The road has crumbled away so much, the metal grid is visible in one of the largest potholes, and you can look down into the hole.

IDOT called it a ‘full-depth failure of the roadway.’ The agency said it’s not known how long they’ll need to keep the lane closed to fix the problem.

* The pothole

* The Question: Caption?

    With regards to the quality of roads in Illinois, we set the rebar low.

    So where does the state go from here? A gas tax is a declining revenue when it comes to year to year usage. Especially considering the entire reduction of fossil fuel and carbon footprint, according to the Clean Jobs Now Act, that is looking to be achieved in Illinois by 2030.

    The Dems want to remove Donald Trump and put heavy restrictions on drilling capabilities. So most of our gas consumption going forward will be through oil imports.

    Electric cars and fuel efficient vehicles will reduce the amount of revenue brought in on a yearly basis.

    The state is going to bank a capitol bill on a declining revenue stream. Any other ideas?

    @ Anonymous - 4:01 - given the rebar spacing of the grid, it’s a bridge deck, and not pavement.

  27. - OneMan - Monday, Mar 25, 19 @ 4:16 pm:

    Just think of it as a more cost-effective way of doing bridge decking as they use on the drawbridges on the Chicago River. It’s a grid, just with wider spacing.

  42. - Huh? - Monday, Mar 25, 19 @ 6:03 pm:

    Not sure the pictures are of a bridge deck. Bridge deck has 2 layers of rebar spaced similar to what is shown. Don’t see bottom layer of rebar in photo. It could be an approach pavement to a bridge.

    I can’t think of a place where IDOT has ever built a road with pre or post tension strands. It isn’t a pavement design that IDOT has used in the past 30 years. A few years ago, I read about post tensioning being used with precast pavement panels.
