* I’m heading to a bill-signing, so you’re on your own for a while. Please keep it Illinois-centric and be nice to each other. I’m not quite sure when I’ll be back, so keep an eye on our live coverage post for updates.

I’m going to try to play golf (9 holes) this afternoon.

If someone can let Tom Cross know, I’ll meet him on the putting green.

I’d notify him myself or tell Fox Bend to reach out to him but…

  10. - Amalia - Tuesday, Jun 25, 19 @ 10:03 am:

want pix of Rich Miller at this bill signing. actually, I think he should be getting a ceremonial pen because his work on this blog on the topic has been at the front of the debate on the issue. Rock on

  14. - Practical Politics - Tuesday, Jun 25, 19 @ 10:25 am:

Visited the North Side ballpark last night. Methinks that many comments concerning the recent Crosstown Classic Series were posted by people channeling Jay Marriotti’s criticisms about Wrigley Field which date back to the Tribune ownership. Numerous repairs and renovations have been completed and the park has not looked so good in decades.

  15. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Jun 25, 19 @ 10:35 am:

===Numerous repairs and renovations have been completed and the park has not looked so good in decades.===

    You’re not wrong.

The scoreboards in left and right, the changes to add boxes where seats were are the trade off, and in some ways the ball park is worse off with those changes.

Cubs ownership since before the Trib has been the lacking ingredient, and while I’m grateful for Theo and all the club did to bring a World Series, the Ricketts have inserted themselves, sometimes badly, into local things and their real beliefs are less than accepting.

It’s a tough balancing act, but like the ball park, you have to take the ball club and it’s ownership as two different things.

    Bizzare

Any truth to the rumor that Rich will be going to the Cubs game at Wrigley tonight while he’s in Chicago for the bill signing?

  24. - illini - Tuesday, Jun 25, 19 @ 11:21 am:

    ===You can. I don’t.===

As a life long fan of the Cardinals I would, actually quite often, find myself pulling for the Cubs over the years. But adding the overt political activism of the ownership into the equation does add an extra consideration. Sometimes that is very hard to do.

  25. - Cheryl44 - Tuesday, Jun 25, 19 @ 11:23 am:

I have to admit I didn’t know Chicago’s public library branches don’t open on Sundays and I am happy to see Mayor Lightfoot making that a priority. Both Daley and Emanuel cut library funding in their first terms.

  26. - Grand Avenue - Tuesday, Jun 25, 19 @ 11:26 am:

Now that legalization will be happening January 1, the next battleground will be municipalities updating their zoning codes to determine where dispensaries can be put.

Groucho and Ambrose Bierce. I think it has something to do with the Confederate flag being displayed. And some people we’re upset about that.

    Interleague play, A guy.

Re Cannabis bill - I know that rec sales would start on Jan 1, but what provisions of bill go into effect before then? As of today or July 1st?

  35. - Ambrose Bierce - Tuesday, Jun 25, 19 @ 12:29 pm:

Poergie ==I think it has something to do with the Confederate flag being displayed. And some people we’re upset about that.==

Thank you. Not to be insensitive to issues around the rebel flag, but how is the display of a confederate flag in an historical and educational context a security concern? Was the confederate flag display the reason given for the initial cancellation?

  36. - Anon E Moose - Tuesday, Jun 25, 19 @ 12:33 pm:

Has anyone heard from Bruce Rauner? It must be hard for him to see someone y’know accomplish things for the State of Illinois. Tough crowd at those North Shore cocktail parties.

  37. - L.A. - Tuesday, Jun 25, 19 @ 12:42 pm:

anyone else having issues with ILGA’s website today? Moving awfully slow…

  38. - Grandson of Man - Tuesday, Jun 25, 19 @ 12:51 pm:

I love sports because of the players and follow them. That’s why I won’t boycott a team because it’s owned by people like the Ricketts. I really want to, though. It’s not the players’ fault for the owners’ political affiliations. Sometimes when players are unhappy with a president, they’re no-shows when the team meets the president after winning a championship.

  39. - revvedup - Tuesday, Jun 25, 19 @ 12:56 pm:

Mr. Bierce, ref the cancelled Civil War reenactment, per WBBM radio originally, the Director tried canceling it due to claims of racism/display of Confed flag (even though Board did not vote on decision), then said due to the contract with reenactors it would go on. Guess they found a way to get sued..I mean cancel the event.

  40. - Rich Miller - Tuesday, Jun 25, 19 @ 1:00 pm:

Matt, I didn’t ask for a pen. I did declare dibs on the sign tho. Lol

  41. - JoanP - Tuesday, Jun 25, 19 @ 1:03 pm:

=Any truth to the rumor that Rich will be going to the Cubs game at Wrigley tonight while he’s in Chicago for the bill signing?=

Considering the nature of the bill, more likely the Rolling Stones concert.

  42. - Peorhie Tirebiter - Tuesday, Jun 25, 19 @ 1:07 pm:

Rich - could you please post a snapshot of the sign? You know, for posterities sake?

  43. - Jose Abreu's Next Homerun - Tuesday, Jun 25, 19 @ 1:13 pm:

I enjoy interleague baseball very much. Now if we can get rid of the pitcher batting finally.

  44. - A guy - Tuesday, Jun 25, 19 @ 1:14 pm:

    ==Interleague play, A guy.==

Of all the things Uncle Bud did that bugged me…this one was least worrisome for me.
For regions with natural rivalries, it’s fun. Cubs/Sox, Yanks/Mets, Tribe/Reds, Stros/Rangers (back then) Doubt Angels/Dodgers ever hit a fever pitch lol.

Using the All Star (exhibition) game to determine home field for the World Series was the boner move in my book. There were a lot of other ways to deal with ties in the all star game…couple of minor league all stars on each side, just in case, etc.

  45. - A guy - Tuesday, Jun 25, 19 @ 1:16 pm:

But hey, within 6 months, grandma won’t need to buy her blunts on the street. That’s a celebration. Bulky and crazy as the legislation came about, it’s a good thing that happened today.

    Here’s the sign: https://twitter.com/GovPritzker/status/1143538888587300865

  47. - A guy - Tuesday, Jun 25, 19 @ 1:56 pm:

So, you called dibs…in Chicago, where such a proclamation is official and universally respected. Did you get it?

  48. - Cheryl44 - Tuesday, Jun 25, 19 @ 2:35 pm:

I understand mine is a minority opinion, but I always liked the idea the two teams playing in the World Series hadn’t seen each other all year.

  49. - Colin Robinson - Tuesday, Jun 25, 19 @ 2:39 pm:

Predictions are still all over the place on payment of the AFSCME bonus and backpay. Anywhere from July 1 to September 30. Summer of anxiety.

  50. - A guy - Tuesday, Jun 25, 19 @ 4:14 pm:

==I understand mine is a minority opinion, but I always liked the idea the two teams playing in the World Series hadn’t seen each other all year.==

I get that. We’re spoiled in Chicago in that every major league team comes through town on one side or the other. It’s got to be a kick in St. Louis to occasionally have the Red Sox and Yankees come around. Or in Seattle to have the Dodgers or Braves breeze through. It’s weird to think of the great baseball towns; Philly, Boston, St. Louis, and a few others being “dark” half the summer on home baseball.

  51. - Da Big Bad Wolf - Wednesday, Jun 26, 19 @ 6:05 am:

==Groucho and Ambrose Bierce. I think it has something to do with the Confederate flag being displayed. And some people we’re upset about that.==

No. It was cancelled for security. It costs to much to provide security for an event that takes over many acres in the forest preserve.
