What’s the governor doing with all that extra time?

Wednesday, Sep 11, 2019 - Posted by Rich Miller

* From September 3rd

The injury means Pritzker will be working out of the James R. Thompson Center in Chicago and his Chicago home instead of his usual, grueling statewide travel plans.

The governor’s office said Pritzker had been attending 10 to 12 events a week, which they deemed “pretty aggressive.”

That was indeed an aggressive schedule. And now he’s stuck in the office all day. I’ve been wondering what he’s been doing with all that extra time on his hands.

* Gov. Pritzker was on the WJBC Scott Miller Show today and was asked about his broken leg and how things are different now. He said he’s using a crutch to get around (two crutches are too awkward, he said) and then said this

My staff, I’m sure, thinks that I’m driving them crazy because I’m looking at every detail of what they’re doing because I’ve got a little more time in the office than I normally do.

* From Deputy Chief of Staff for Communications Emily Bittner…

I can confirm that we love spending time with the boss and we are fortunate to have much much more time and scrutiny from him.

Does that look like a hostage statement to you? /s

It’s the James R. Stockholm Center. lol

Please have the hostage hold up a picture of today’s newspaper, we need proof of life.

  4. - What's in a name? - Wednesday, Sep 11, 19 @ 2:37 pm:

Its very hard not to like the guy. He didn’t need the job. I imagine the break could be tied to the activity involved in being governor; he isn’t grousing and he is showing up to work, in an actual office. Good for him and good for us.

  5. - lakeside - Wednesday, Sep 11, 19 @ 2:40 pm:

That is a brilliant statement. And speaks very well to both their working relationship and Bittner’s relationship with the press.

    Meh, I’d let him tweet.

    What harm could it do?

  8. - Honeybear - Wednesday, Sep 11, 19 @ 2:47 pm:

The signal is to cross your fingers in a photo. We can’t expect folks to blink out S.O.S. in morse code since hardly anyone knows it anymore
—…— But just in case. Three longs, three shorts, three longs

  9. - Chicago Cynic - Wednesday, Sep 11, 19 @ 2:48 pm:

Love the statement from Emily! “Much much more time.” Good thing JB isn’t some other rich chief executive without a sense of humor or Emily would have been fired by tweet already.

He could start a podcast, talk about all the places he visited during the campaign, tell fun anecdotal stories about each place…

Call it Pritzker’s Pitstops… sponsored by Enjoy Illinois?

That…is an invitation to contact the SWAT Team.

I hear there have been complaints to JRTC security of missing sandwiches and pop from minifridges of governor’s office staff on the 16th floor. Any correlation? /s

  14. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Sep 11, 19 @ 3:04 pm:

    Get 1,000 piece puzzles.

The governor must fit 20 pieces before he can call or email anyone. That should slow things down.

  15. - Unsurprised - Wednesday, Sep 11, 19 @ 3:08 pm:

Should’ve been paying attention to that detail when he had the Sterigenics bill in front of him. Or the casino bill with the unworkable tax structure. Those would’ve been nice opportunities.

I think if you take the first letter in each word of her statement, it spells “Help me” /s

“We are working well together, and appreciate the extra attention we receive” (said in a monotone voice and blank expression).

Kudos to Honeybear for the S-O-S reference; some American pilots held during the Vietnam War also blinked “torture” while giving forced statements and confessions of war crimes.

Here are some messages for our friends at the JRTC “Your fax machine rings loudly”…

We can help! Everyone on the blog needs to make an appointment with the Governor. We can help the staff by keeping the governor engaged with his constituents. :-P

Personally oversee the extensive water park renovation planned for the JRTC.

The permits and drawings alone will keep anyone busy for two plus weeks…

Some of the youngsters in the Gov’s staff could use a little more adult supervision. ;)

    Ms. Bittner.

The ice is melting on the griddle.

The cat drinks milk from the tuba.

    John has a long mustache.

The hat was lost in the meadow.

The monkey ate the ice cream.

  23. - Pick a Name - Wednesday, Sep 11, 19 @ 3:43 pm:

Not a snarky question. Is JB seen around Springfield much? Rauner was here a lot, attending events, going to various restaurants, etc.

Just wondering if JB is making the rounds.

Someone send a case of beer to the 16th floor.

@ OW, Maybe He can do the Blago rule and not do anything until he’s finished a biography on napoleon…

    - Just Another Anon -

Make it a Lincoln biography and then I think you’re on the right track.

Let’s keep the Blago ideas at this one, and only this one

  27. - Pot calling kettle - Wednesday, Sep 11, 19 @ 4:11 pm:

He could be put in charge of ordering lunch every day. That will keep him busy all morning taking orders and trying to collect for the bill and tip.

  28. - Earnest - Wednesday, Sep 11, 19 @ 4:15 pm:

Emily, if you’re ever really desperate, I suggest asking him to help you with a 1,000 line Excel spreadsheet where two lines should total equal but are off by a penny. The thing to do is go in and change the rounding convention for one of the cells to the nearest ‘5′. That should keep him busy for a few hours…unless he has so much time on his hands that he’s actually reading the comments on this post.

=I can confirm that we love spending time with the boss and we are fortunate to have much much more time and scrutiny from him.=

A fun little window into the atmosphere around the governor’s office.

No need for fawning over the dear leader, unlike somebody else we know.

  30. - Henry Francis - Wednesday, Sep 11, 19 @ 4:34 pm:

Have the big man respond to all the FOIA requests the office gets and you will see him up and about, and out of the office within 5 business days.

  31. - Cronish - Wednesday, Sep 11, 19 @ 5:34 pm:

Lol, he’s probably thinking of new things to tax and more ways to spend!

Sorry Honeybear, but SOS is (… — …). I was a morse code interceptor in the army.

    What a great great name

“Just wondering if JB is making the rounds.”
You bet he is around Springfield. He and MK sang and performed recently at the Illinois Coalition Against Domestic Violence Mardi Gras party with Charmaine Neville — may be where he broke his leg–who knew he is a great baritone? I have seen him around town multiple times.
